Suddenly, the sound of rushing water echoed from the far end of the grand hall, followed by a voice rising from underground: “Who dares disturb my slumber?”
Wang Ya turned her head toward the end of the hall and slowly walked in the direction of the voice. When she reached the center of the hall, she saw a throne at the far end. A burly black shadow floated above the throne, coldly staring at her. A storm-like surge of Yin Qi swept toward her as the black shadow suddenly lunged.
Wang Ya clearly saw a tiny Other Shore Flower Mark on the forehead of the charging shadow. The mark felt extremely familiar to her, just like seeing talisman paper she had drawn herself. As this thought flashed through her mind, the shadow was already upon her. A pair of claws covered in azure scales and curved, sharp nails reached for her face. Without thinking, Wang Ya raised her right palm and struck the center of those azure-scaled claws. As her hand lifted, she distinctly felt a chilling aura flow through her meridians, continuously channeling power into her palm. The moment her palm connected with the claw, the power inside her erupted wildly, inexplicably whipping up a gale.
The shadow lunging at her was sent flying back to the throne with a single palm strike!
The shadow crashed onto the throne and let out a beast-like howl, then shouted, “It’s you! What are you doing here?”
Wang Ya asked in confusion, “What?”
The shadow suddenly stood up and bellowed, “Who are you? Who are you, exactly?”
Wang Ya stared blankly at the shadow. No matter how she looked at it, she didn’t recognize it, but that flower at the center of its forehead between its brows was all too familiar.
The shadow floated down from the throne and stopped about three meters in front of Wang Ya.
Wang Ya got a clear look at its appearance. It didn’t resemble a human so much as a beast. There were tumor-like protrusions on both sides of its forehead, its eyelids bulged out with the eyeballs protruding as well, its pupils were compound eyes, its nostrils were huge like a bull’s, its mouth was full of sharp teeth, and both its face and body were covered in thick, snake-like scales. Wang Ya glanced down at its feet and saw long, hook-like claws gripping the ground. She figured this thing must have grown in the water of the Ultimate Yin Acupoint for many years and would surely be a great tonic to eat. But the Other Shore Flower Mark in the center of its forehead told her she couldn’t eat it, though she couldn’t recall when she had planted that mark on it.
Wang Ya extremely disliked herself after using the Other Shore Yellow Springs Art. Her mind was muddled and dazed, half-dreaming and half-awake, with many emotions and thoughts that didn’t belong to her floating into her head. Sometimes, she couldn’t even distinguish reality from illusion. Just like now—the ghosts that had hidden in the shadows earlier were all gathered behind this Azure Scale Monster, telling it that she had killed its companions.
Weren’t these ghosts? How could she understand ghost speech? Ghosts communicated at frequencies beyond human hearing—how could she hear them?
But as soon as the Azure Scale Monster learned she had killed its companions, it flew into a rage and roared, “You trespassed into my Imperial Tomb and killed my attendants! You broke the agreement—you deserve to die!” It dropped to all fours like an enraged beast and pounced. It leaped into the air over four meters high, swinging its foreclaws at her. The strike was ferocious; Wang Ya even saw the air shudder from its momentum.
She saw it charging at her face. Swiftly, she raised her palms and clamped onto its claws before they could hit her. With a exertion of force, her body soared into the air. She kicked its abdomen, then tumbled to the ground together with the Azure Scale Monster. Just before hitting the floor, Wang Ya released her grip and slid nimbly beneath it. She lightly pushed off the ground with her palm and leaped up. The ghosts gathered behind the Azure Scale Monster also lunged at Wang Ya. She swung her palm back at them, sending one flying with each strike. Then the Azure Scale Monster pounced again, claws aimed straight at her face. Wang Ya raised her hand, grabbed its claw, and chopped her palm toward its throat. The Azure Scale Monster lowered its head and snapped at her descending palm. Wang Ya changed her palm strike into a slap across the Azure Scale Monster’s face, knocking its head aside. It then madly pressed down on her with its full weight. Wang Ya stepped back two paces, spotted an opening at its waist, and kicked hard. It twisted flexibly in midair and counterattacked. Wang Ya was too close to dodge; she chopped at its descending claw. The Azure Scale Monster slashed and grabbed madly, forcing Wang Ya to counter with continuous palm strikes.
The Azure Scale Monster’s onslaught was fierce. Each clash of palms left Wang Ya’s arms numb. A surge of anger welled up from the bottom of her heart. She swung her fist and smashed it into the Azure Scale Monster’s head. Not satisfied with one punch, she grabbed its arm, swung it overhead, and slammed it into the ground. Wang Ya figured the stone slabs on the floor had weathered over the years—they shattered like tofu on impact. The Azure Scale Monster wasn’t one to take it lying down. After being slammed, it rolled, leaped up, charged at Wang Ya, and rammed into her, sending her flying.
Crimson light erupted from Wang Ya’s body. She flew back seven or eight meters. The instant her toes touched the ground, she sprang at the Azure Scale Monster. Her palms crossed in slaps that rained down pia pia pia, fists and feet flying as she tangled with it. The ghosts nearby tried to join in or sneak attack, but any that got close were casually swatted away by Wang Ya.
One ghost lunged at Wang Ya’s front. She grabbed it, twisted off its neck, and bit into the broken stump, greedily sucking the Yin Qi from its body. In less than two seconds, it crumbled into a pile of dry bones on the floor. In the next second, Wang Ya pounced on another ghost nearby.
The Azure Scale Monster was furious to the extreme. It chased after Wang Ya, tearing, biting, clawing, and scratching in a frenzy as they rolled together.
Wang Ya couldn’t break free from the Azure Scale Monster’s entanglement. She watched helplessly as several ghosts slipped into ground cracks and escaped, while taking several heavy hits herself—the worst one sent her crashing into a stone pillar, cracking it! Debris fell, revealing a Stone Coffin inside. Pain fueled her rage, driving her mad. She unleashed a barrage of wild chops and strikes on the Azure Scale Monster! Don’t think that Other Shore Flower Mark on you means I can’t eat you or kill you! You hit me? I’ll still eat you! Who told you to fatten up like this? You look so delicious!
I’m a pretty big fan of how the possession (if it is) is portrayed here. Wang Ya is kind of justifying all of her actions how she would with only a shift in focus
