Feng Miwan waved her hand. “It’s fine, it’s fine. I was just… asking casually.”
Zhao Shutong chimed in. “So, how long will her surgery take? When will she be back?”
The nurse flipped through the schedule and surgery records on her desk.
“This one’s pretty complicated today, and the situation is quite tricky. Dr. Xiong is one of the lead surgeons. By the time the surgery’s done and the follow-up is handled, it’ll probably be right around the end of her shift.”
“If you’re feeling unwell and want to see a doctor, you can get an appointment with Dr. Chen, who’s seeing patients now. Her skills are excellent too.”
She pointed to the consultation room they had noticed earlier.
Feng Miwan shook her head. “No need, no need. Thank you, Nurse Sister. Sorry for the trouble.”
She handed over the stack of notices.
“Oh, right, this is from Dr. Ren in the Emergency Department downstairs. She asked us to deliver it to Dr. Xiong. Could you pass it on to her later?”
The nurse took the notices and glanced at them. She couldn’t help but burst out laughing and quickly covered her mouth. “Okay, sure. I’ll definitely give it to Dr. Xiong.”
Mission accomplished, Feng Miwan and Zhao Shutong left the Trauma Department dejectedly.
At the hospital entrance, Zhao Shutong sighed. “What now? Head home separately?”
Feng Miwan stared at the hospital gates, her gaze resolute. “We’re already here. I’m not leaving! I’ll wait for Yibai to get off at noon and go home together.”
Zhao Shutong thought about the schedule. “Yibai only has the morning shift, but Queyue has to work all day until evening.”
Feng Miwan offered an idea. “Then why don’t you have lunch with Senior Sister Queyue before you go!”
“Good point! Then I won’t leave either!”
Zhao Shutong threw her arm around Feng Miwan’s shoulders.
“But it’s still a while until noon. We can’t just stand here at the entrance like door gods, right? Let’s find somewhere to kill time first.”
“Agreed!”
Feng Miwan nodded vigorously. “How about a milk tea shop?”
Zhao Shutong nodded. “Let’s go!”
A long while later, Xiong Yibai finally finished the complex surgery and returned to her consultation room.
She glanced at the clock on the wall. Ten minutes until the end of her shift.
She took off her surgical gown, rubbed her sore neck, picked up her phone, and sent a message to her top contact:
“Just finished a surgery. I’m about to get off work.”
As soon as she sent it, there was a knock at the door. The nurse came in with a sheet of paper.
“Dr. Xiong, you’re back. This is from Dr. Ren in the Emergency Department downstairs. She said it’s an office notice for you.”
Xiong Yibai thanked her, took the paper, and looked at it for a moment: “…………”
She was somewhat speechless and thought to herself:
What bored idiot’s prank is this?
Then she tore the paper in half and tossed it into the trash bin nearby.
At that moment, the nurse, who was about to leave, seemed to remember something and added:
“Oh, right, Dr. Xiong. Two patients came looking for you earlier. They brought this notice up for Dr. Ren.”
Xiong Yibai paused in shutting down her computer, sensing something. She looked up and asked, “Which two?”
The nurse recalled. “I don’t know their names. Two young women. One was… um, pretty handsome-looking, and the other was very beautiful.”
Xiong Yibai’s eyes flickered as she pressed.
“The handsome one—did she have medium-long hair with a few ear cuffs? And the beautiful one—was she wearing ten-centimeter high heels?”
The nurse nodded. “Yes, yes! Dr. Xiong, you know them?”
Xiong Yibai didn’t answer right away. Her gaze slowly shifted to the trash bin where she’d just thrown the paper. She fell silent for two seconds.
She thought: …Tch. My hands were too quick; I already tore it up… What now?
She looked at the crumpled paper in the bin and asked the nurse, “I know them. Do you have any more of these notices?”
“Yes!”
The nurse went out and brought back another one.
“They brought a whole stack. I was planning to distribute one to each office. The rats in the offices have been rampant lately. This notice might actually be useful.”
With that, she handed a new one to Xiong Yibai.
Xiong Yibai took it, pulled out her phone, snapped a photo of the notice, and sent it to Feng Miwan with the caption:
“Your masterpiece?”
At that moment, Feng Miwan’s reply to her earlier off-work message popped up:
“I’m here to pick you up!”
Immediately after, another message came in response to the photo:
“Yes, yes! I came up with the copy! Am I awesome?! (๑•̀ㅂ•́)و✧”
Xiong Yibai couldn’t help but chuckle softly. “Awesome. Totally worthy of being my Little Honey.”
The nurse standing nearby watched Xiong Yibai’s rare change in expression and asked curiously:
“Dr. Xiong, didn’t you just tear one up? Why do you want another?”
Xiong Yibai toned down her smile and waved the paper in her hand.
“I suddenly thought… it might be good to post it. There really are a lot of rats.”
With that, she walked to the bulletin board in the office, found a prominent but unobtrusive spot, and stuck the notice up.
The nurse watched her contradictory actions, nodded in half-understanding, muttered to herself that Dr. Xiong seemed a bit different today, then hugged the remaining notices and headed to the other offices.
Xiong Yibai packed up her things and took the elevator to the first floor.
As soon as she stepped out of the hospital doors, she spotted the familiar figure waiting at the entrance.
Feng Miwan was idly kicking pebbles on the ground. When she looked up and saw her, a huge smile bloomed on her face. Like a large dog spotting its owner, she hurried over.
“Yibai!” She naturally reached out her hand.
Xiong Yibai smiled faintly and took her hand. “Mm. Wait long?”
She noticed only Feng Miwan was there and asked, “Where’s Shutong? Not with you?”
Feng Miwan blinked. “Huh? How did you know she was here?”
Xiong Yibai adjusted her glasses.
“The nurse described the people who came looking for me: one handsome, one very beautiful, wearing ten-centimeter heels. Besides you two, I can’t think of another pair.”
Feng Miwan grinned.
“I see! Senior Sister Queyue got off work and came straight over to drag her off to eat, saying she was going to properly interrogate her about skipping store supervision to slack off at the hospital today.”
As they spoke, a few more people emerged from the hospital doors.
Leading them was Xiong Daichuan, flanked by several assistants and doctors.
Xiong Daichuan spotted his daughter at once.
“Hey, Xiaobai, off work?”
He turned to Feng Miwan. “Eh? Why’s Xiaowan here too?”
Feng Miwan’s heart skipped a beat. She reflexively let go of Xiong Yibai’s hand. “Hello, Uncle Xiong!”
Xiong Yibai felt her hand empty and saw Feng Miwan’s nervous look, finding it amusing.
She nodded to her father. “Yeah, just got off. Heading home. Xiaowan… happened to be passing by and came to pick me up.”
