6. Reprimand
Mo Xiao had no desire to get entangled with the scholar’s wife. She walked forward and extended a hand to Zuo Wuyi. “Let’s go.”
“Okay!” Zuo Wuyi took Mo Xiao’s hand. Feeling the warmth of her palm, she reverted to her well-behaved child persona.
“Mo…” The scholar’s wife tried to open her mouth to say something, but she quickly found that she couldn’t make a sound.
Yun He glanced at the scholar’s wife with some hesitation. She actually wanted to lend the woman a hand, but she became conflicted when she thought of her senior sister’s attitude. After a look of indecision, she still followed in Mo Xiao and Zuo Wuyi’s footsteps.
“Did you tell Master you were bringing Little Junior Sister out?” After walking some distance, Mo Xiao turned her head to ask Yun He.
Yun He blinked, trying to feign innocence like Zuo Wuyi. “Um, I told Master that I was bringing Little Junior Sister to find you, Senior Sister.”
“You told her?” Mo Xiao raised an eyebrow. Seeing the guilt practically written on Yun He’s face, her expression darkened. “The ‘told Master’ you speak of… don’t tell me you just left a message for her?”
Yun He scratched the back of her head, trying to laugh it off and gloss over it. Of course I only left a message. If I had asked Master face-to-face, she would have refused one hundred percent.
“You don’t consider your own safety, and you don’t consider Little Junior Sister’s either?” Mo Xiao looked at Yun He, her gaze growing solemn. “You’re at the Golden Core stage, so ordinary cultivators won’t do anything to you. But Little Junior Sister is only at the Qi Refinement stage. If you two really encountered something, how would you get away unscathed?”
Yun He lowered her head in admission of her mistake. “Senior Sister, it won’t happen again.”
“Really?” Mo Xiao was skeptical. In her past life, she had focused on cultivation, but even when she emerged from seclusion, she would hear of Yun He’s exploits. They were always too rash and presumptuous, ending in serious injury.
“I promise, I will think thrice before acting in the future!” Yun He immediately declared. “Senior Sister and Little Junior Sister can both supervise me.”
Mo Xiao glanced at Yun He but did not continue her lecture.
Zuo Wuyi looked at the hand Mo Xiao was holding, and the corners of her mouth couldn’t help but lift. She only gave Yun He another innocent little expression.
With Zuo Wuyi’s addition, Mo Xiao’s daily routine gained one more task: accompanying Zuo Wuyi to eat. This town was full of low-level cultivators, and only a tavern in the center of town served meals containing spiritual energy.
“Welcome, three esteemed guests. What would you like to eat?” As soon as they entered the tavern, a waiter came up to greet them.
“Do you have meals with spiritual energy here?” Yun He asked.
The waiter’s eyes lit up. These are big customers! “Yes, we just happened to catch a spirit fish today. Would the three of you like to try it?”
“Then bring three, and some other good dishes to go with them.” Yun He said, glancing at Mo Xiao out of the corner of her eye, then added, “And a small pot of good wine.”
“Hm?” Mo Xiao looked at Yun He, displeased with the latter half of her sentence.
“I’ll drink it by myself,” Yun He said. She only breathed a sigh of relief after her senior sister looked away. She didn’t know why, but even though her senior sister was about the same age as her, as soon as she got serious, Yun He subconsciously feared she would get angry.
Zuo Wuyi was not surprised by this scene at all, because she knew that Mo Xiao disliked wine and disliked people drinking.
After all, in the past, if she attended a banquet and came back drunk, she would basically get a lecture from Mo Xiao. If it weren’t for her thick skin and ability to act cute and throw tantrums, just getting drunk would be enough to make Mo Xiao angry with her for days.
The single-courtyard house felt a bit quiet with only Mo Xiao living in it, but with the addition of Yun He and Zuo Wuyi, it became much livelier.
“Senior Sister, I just brought Little Junior Sister out for a trip. We’ll go back in a few days,” Yun He said proactively after staying for three days. “After all, Little Junior Sister still needs to cultivate, and the spiritual energy concentration here is too low.”
Mo Xiao nodded, a look of gratification in her eyes as she looked at Yun He. She’s still considering Little Junior Sister’s cultivation. It seems Yun He does have some sense of propriety.
“No, I want to be with Senior Sister.” Zuo Wuyi had gone to great lengths to get Yun He to bring her out. How could she possibly go back after just a few days?
“Don’t be willful. The spiritual energy concentration here is too low. It will affect your cultivation progress,” Mo Xiao said with a stern face. “Go back to the sect tomorrow.”
Zuo Wuyi immediately grabbed the corner of Mo Xiao’s robe. “I want to be with Senior Sister. My cultivation speed is very fast. It doesn’t matter if the spiritual energy is a little low. It will allow me to build a more solid foundation.”
“Little Junior Sister, Senior Sister is going to settle here anyway. At worst, you can just come visit her every few days,” Yun He said, choosing to side with Mo Xiao after some thought. If Little Junior Sister’s excellent talent was delayed because of her, she couldn’t bear the responsibility.
Zuo Wuyi didn’t speak, just looked up at Mo Xiao. “Senior Sister, I’m not being willful. I don’t think cultivating too fast is a good thing. I also need to temper my character out here.”
Mo Xiao looked down. She really couldn’t see what Zuo Wuyi needed to temper. After all, these were not words that someone with a poor character could say.
“Can I know the reason you want to follow me?” Mo Xiao asked. “Don’t use the excuse that I look like your sister to brush me off.”
That reason could explain Zuo Wuyi’s closeness to her, but it couldn’t explain why Zuo Wuyi would disregard improving her cultivation just to follow her.
Zuo Wuyi pressed her lips together. She knew that if she used that reason too much, Mo Xiao would see that something was wrong, but wasn’t it a bit too early for her to find out now? When did she become so thoughtful?
Seeing Zuo Wuyi remain silent, Mo Xiao knew she was right. She directly pulled Zuo Wuyi’s hand away. “No need to wait for tomorrow. Let’s go today.”
Yun He looked at Zuo Wuyi, whose eyes were already brimming with tears, and felt a pang of pity. “Senior Sister, maybe Little Junior Sister is just closer to you…” There’s no need to drive her away so heartlessly, is there?
“Zuo Wuyi, think about why you came to the Wen Dao Sect. Since you chose to step onto the path of cultivation and became Master’s disciple, you should focus on cultivating and pursuing the Great Dao.” Mo Xiao was not swayed by emotional appeals. Besides, she didn’t think she and Zuo Wuyi had any deep feelings for each other.
Of course I came for you! If you weren’t here, I wouldn’t have come to the Wen Dao Sect at all!
Zuo Wuyi felt a little wronged. She had come to this world for Mo Xiao. In her last life, she had searched for Mo Xiao for four hundred years, only to see her for that one brief moment. Now that she had the chance to follow Mo Xiao, she would of course not let it go.
“You don’t want me anymore.” Zuo Wuyi lowered her head, tears rolling down from her eyes. “If you want me to go, then I’ll go.”
Mo Xiao frowned slightly. Hearing Zuo Wuyi’s words, she felt an inexplicable discomfort in her heart. She had clearly just done a very normal and correct thing. Why did she feel guilty? This was unreasonable.
“Ah, Senior Sister, why don’t we let Little Junior Sister stay and play for a few days? Another day or two won’t hurt,” Yun He’s stance began to waver wildly. She couldn’t bear to see Little Junior Sister cry, especially since she was the one who brought her out. “If Senior Sister is worried that the spiritual energy concentration here will affect Little Junior Sister’s cultivation, I can use spirit stones to build a temporary spirit-gathering formation. Would that be okay?”
Mo Xiao had nothing to say. After a long silence, she let out a breath of turbid air. “I’ve said what I needed to say. Do as you please.”
Does the female lead have some kind of special constitution? Why does my heart ache whenever I see her looking aggrieved? This is absurd.
And just like that, Zuo Wuyi ended up staying for the time being. Yun He was also worried that her actions would delay Zuo Wuyi’s cultivation progress, so she directly used mid-grade spirit stones to build a spirit-gathering formation, consuming spirit stones every day to ensure Zuo Wuyi could stay in a room with ample spiritual energy.
Zuo Wuyi didn’t actually want Yun He to help her like this, but she wanted to stay, so she could only bury herself in cultivation to avoid wasting Yun He’s kindness. As a result, she spent the entire day cultivating, aside from sleeping and eating, and the time she could actually spend with Mo Xiao was not much.
“Hello, is anyone there?” Just as Zuo Wuyi was cooped up in her room cultivating, a knock came from outside.
Yun He quickly awoke from her meditation. “Little Junior Sister, don’t move. I’ll go see what’s going on.”
“Hello, I am Scholar Liu from next door.” When Yun He opened the door, she saw a young man dressed as a scholar.
“Who are you looking for?” A look of impatience appeared on Yun He’s face. Having met the scholar’s wife before, her impression of Scholar Liu was not very good.
Scholar Liu wore a proper smile on his face. “My wife has caught a cold and is unwilling to take her medicine. She said she wants to see Miss Mo from next door.”
“Miss Mo?” Yun He raised an eyebrow. “What do you want with me?”
“You are Miss Mo?” Scholar Liu was a little surprised. “Could I trouble you to make a trip?”
“I can go with you, but you have to answer a question for me first.” Yun He did not agree immediately. Although her personality was a bit flighty, it didn’t mean she wasn’t vigilant. This Scholar Liu didn’t look like a good person. Who knew what ill intentions he had in suddenly inviting her senior sister over?
“Please ask, Miss,” Scholar Liu’s attitude was very good.
“I heard a few days ago that your wife was poisoned. Did you poison her?” Yun He asked.
Hearing Yun He’s blunt words, the corners of Scholar Liu’s mouth couldn’t help but twitch. “Miss, you can’t make baseless accusations. Please don’t slander me.”
“Did I slander you?” Yun He looked Scholar Liu up and down. “If it wasn’t you, then who was the one who poisoned her?”
It took a great deal of effort for Scholar Liu to maintain the expression on his face. “I am not clear on that. Perhaps some villain wanted to harm my wife.”
“Alright, then I’ll go with you and take a look.” Yun He agreed. She wanted to see what kind of scheme Scholar Liu was plotting.
“I’m going too.” Zuo Wuyi appeared at the door at some point.
“This…” Yun He hesitated. It wasn’t that she was afraid Zuo Wuyi would encounter danger, but she was worried she would see some unpleasant scenes that would affect her state of mind.
“Senior Sister, you’ll protect me, right?” Zuo Wuyi said, her eyes filled with trust as she looked at Yun He.
Being looked at like this by Zuo Wuyi, Yun He suddenly felt her own image grow taller, instantly filled with a sense of protectiveness. “But of course! Let’s go, Senior Sister. I will definitely protect you.”
Seeing this, the twitching at the corners of Scholar Liu’s mouth became even more severe. It’s not like my house is a dragon’s den or a tiger’s lair. Is there a need for this?
