Chapter 39: The Family of Three
After a quick sweep of the living room, the group spread some relatively clean clothes on the floor. After sitting down and eating something, they all lay down to rest.
How could they not be tired after a full day of travel?
Xiao Feng was nestled in Xiao An’s arms, still looking angry, complaining about the family of three.
The first watch of the night was usually Zhang Can’er and Wan Feng, so the two of them were still sitting up.
Although Xiao Feng’s voice was not loud, it was not soft either in the room. The family of three over there could definitely hear it, but they acted as if they couldn’t.
Zhang Can’er glanced at them, her face expressionless.
But Wan Feng suddenly asked, “If something happens to them, will you interfere?”
Zhang Can’er was stunned for a moment, then shook her head. “It depends on the situation. I’ll save them if I can. If I can’t, it’s none of my business. Anyway, I’ll just do my best.”
Wan Feng blinked her eyes, a little puzzled. “This is not the same as your previous attitude.”
Zhang Can’er looked up at her and leaned closer. “I don’t know why I was so emotional before. It seems I was very prone to acting impulsively.”
“It was probably too much of a shock. Any normal person, seeing their own kind die in front of them, would have some emotional turmoil, unless they’ve experienced it too much,” Wan Feng said, holding her hand and squeezing it slightly, trying to convey her comfort.
Zhang Can’er leaned completely into Wan Feng’s embrace. Hearing what Wan Feng said, she just nodded and hummed in agreement.
In the middle of the night, it was Xiao Hou and Xiao Hao’s turn to keep watch. Both of them were a bit sleepy, but they still tried to stay alert. But for some reason, their eyelids grew heavier and heavier, and they fell asleep just like that.
But the family of three not far from them suddenly got up, their movements stiff, their eyes dull, and walked toward the main door.
The man quietly opened the main door. The night was very quiet, so quiet that only the low growls from the side could be heard. There was no moon or stars tonight. It would probably rain tomorrow.
The family of three suddenly raised their hands and slammed the already open main door. They stood at the doorway, their movements still a bit stiff, but the force of their slamming was extremely heavy.
The sound quickly attracted the nearby Mutants. Smelling the fragrance of living creatures, they rushed over.
The group, who had been woken up by the noise, had already packed their things and were ready to evacuate by the time the Mutants arrived.
“We’re almost at Starshine City. Why are they still doing this?” Xiao Feng asked with a frown, very puzzled.
“Let’s not worry about them for now. Go to the second floor and get out through the window,” Wan Feng said, looking at the somewhat panicked Zhang Can’er and immediately making a decision.
The group quickly went up to the second floor. At the same time, the Mutants also rushed into the living room. But a strange scene happened.
The Mutants seemed unable to smell the family of three and passed right by them, running upstairs.
The staircase was a bit small, and there were many Mutants, so they were all squeezed together. The ones in the back kept pushing forward, and the ones in the front couldn’t even get up. This cycle bought the group some time.
But the windows upstairs were all very tight. Zhang Can’er and the others tried to open them for a long time, but the windows didn’t budge.
Seeing the Mutants that had already come upstairs, Wan Feng couldn’t be bothered with that anymore. She took out her Tang sword and slashed at the Mutants coming up.
The Tang sword cut through them like mud. Wan Feng was like a god of war, taking a head with each slash.
Fresh blood splattered on her, but Wan Feng seemed not to feel it. Any Mutant that came up could not escape her blade.
Zhang Can’er and the others were stunned for a moment, but they didn’t pay much attention. Xiao Feng had a fiery temper. Seeing the window that wouldn’t open, she kicked it, and the glass shattered.
After clearing the glass shards from the window frame, the group quickly went up. Zhang Can’er stayed behind. Xiao Hou and Xiao Hao went to help Wan Feng.
Seeing that the Mutants couldn’t come up for the time being, the three of them quickly ran to the window.
“Sister Can’er, hurry up,” Xiao Hou shouted.
Zhang Can’er also knew that this was not the time to argue. She nodded, glanced at the staircase, and then turned to go up.
Wan Feng had wanted to be the last to go up, but she was pushed up by Xiao Hou and Xiao Hao. She had no choice but to go up first.
“Brother Hou, you go up first. Xiao Feng just gave me a fireball. I’ll go throw it.”
With that, Xiao Hao ran not far from the staircase, threw a few fireballs, and then quickly ran to the window to climb up.
Xiao Hou didn’t delay either. He knew that this was not the time to argue. He had climbed out the window while Xiao Hao was throwing the fireballs.
He was now lying on the wall, waiting for Xiao Hao to come out.
But behind Xiao Hao, where he hadn’t noticed, a Mutant came out of the fire, its body still burning.
Just as Xiao Hao climbed out the window, the Mutant rushed out, but it rushed too hard and fell directly down.
Xiao Hou was startled and quickly asked Xiao Hao, “Are you okay?”
Xiao Hao’s face was pale. He shook his head, probably very scared.
Seeing him like this, Xiao Hou just thought he was scared, so he comforted him a few times and then climbed up first.
But Xiao Hao didn’t move for a long time, as if lost in some thought.
Xiao Hou, who had climbed to the roof, looked back and, seeing him still there, called out.
Xiao Hao came back to his senses, his face still pale. After climbing to the roof, he didn’t speak anymore and just sat in the corner, listening to Xiao Hou talk about what had just happened.
After hearing this, everyone looked at Xiao Hao with worry. After all, to have such a close encounter with a Mutant, and one that had suddenly rushed out, he must still be very scared.
But below was an army of Mutants. Zhang Can’er and the others had come up first and roughly estimated that there were at least a hundred of them.
The fireballs Xiao Hao had thrown could only block them for a while. They had to leave this place quickly now.
“Xiao Hao,” Zhang Can’er walked over and called out softly.
Hearing the sound, Xiao Hao looked up, his eyes red.
The worry in Zhang Can’er’s eyes grew stronger. She squatted in front of Xiao Hao and smiled. “It’s okay now. That Mutant jumped down by itself. It can’t scare you anymore.”
Xiao Hao’s mood didn’t improve much after hearing this. The panic in his eyes was obvious, but Zhang Can’er just thought he was very scared.
Stroking his head, Zhang Can’er said in a gentle voice, “Don’t be afraid. We have to leave this place quickly now. Can you bear with it for a while?”
Xiao Hao lowered his head, nodded, and then stood up.
But he still didn’t say a word.
Although Zhang Can’er was worried about him, business came first.
The group looked at the Mutants downstairs and discussed how to escape.
The two-story villa they had chosen was the tallest building in this small village, so they had a panoramic view of everything around them.
Because it was a small village, the houses were relatively scattered, unlike the houses outside Starfall Village and Phantom Star Village, which were close together.
And now this house was surrounded. If they wanted to escape from the ground, it was simply suicide.
The closest house to them was at least three or four hundred meters away, so it was impossible to get to the house opposite.
Just as the group was at their wit’s end, Zhang Can’er asked with some confusion, “What are you all worried about? Why do I feel like you’ve forgotten something?”
Just now, Zhang Can’er had been listening from the side and had not expressed any opinion, because she was not worried at all.
