Chapter 38: The Rice in Your Hand Seems More Fragrant
Xiao Feng and Xiao Hou exchanged a look. Xiao Hou shrugged, spread his hands, and said with a punchable expression, “I’ll listen to Sister Can’er.”
Xiao Feng rolled her eyes, ignored him, and followed behind Zhang Can’er.
The family of three was still huddled in the corner. When the little girl in their arms saw Zhang Can’er, she shrank back. Her big, watery eyes were still teary, looking pitiful.
And her parents behind her also hugged her tightly, looking at Zhang Can’er’s group of three with a wary expression.
Zhang Can’er stopped a short distance away from them and didn’t go any further. She smiled gently, and her voice was also very gentle.
“You’re safe now. The Mutants over there have all been cleared out. We’re just here to get some food and then we’ll leave. Don’t be afraid.”
After speaking, Zhang Can’er glanced at the little girl a few times, said no more, turned, and waved for the others to come down.
Xiao Li had the three wolves lead the Mutants far away before she let them come back. After entering the supermarket, she had the three wolves stand guard.
After everyone had arrived at the supermarket, they began their “zero-dollar shopping.” The first things they took were food and water, then some small snacks.
After all the bags were filled to the brim, the group was about to leave.
But the family of three suddenly came out. The man and woman exchanged a look, and then the man, as if mustering his courage, walked up to Zhang Can’er and said, “Can we go with you?”
Zhang Can’er blinked her eyes and shook her head in refusal. “Although I saved you, I don’t want to bring along three burdens. That would harm my teammates.”
“We, we won’t be freeloaders! You can have me do anything,” the man said anxiously.
“Can you kill Mutants? Do you dare to kill them?”
The man closed his mouth, his hands clenched tightly, as if hesitating.
Zhang Can’er glanced at him, then at the mother and daughter behind him, but her heart did not soften.
She could still distinguish between the lives of her own people and the lives of these three. She just didn’t know why her past self had been so impulsive, insisting on saving these three, even at the cost of her own life.
A battle had sobered her up a bit. She couldn’t understand what her past self had been thinking. She could only attribute it to the shock being too great.
Pinching the bridge of her nose, she turned her head, waved her hand, and the group left the supermarket.
Because they had no car, they could only walk. They could indeed find a car, but it would waste too much time. They were not familiar with this place at all.
Moreover, Starfall Village was not too far from Starshine City. At most, it would take three days to walk there. But if they were to look for a car, they didn’t know how long it would take.
It was already past twelve noon when they came out of the supermarket. They didn’t waste any time, eating as they walked, making do with a simple meal.
After leaving Starfall Village, they didn’t dare to go on the main road and could only take some deserted small paths.
Fortunately, Xiao Li’s wolves were scouting ahead, which saved them a lot of trouble.
At night, they found a broken house to rest in. The group was a bit tired. While resting, Xiao Feng pounded her legs and glanced at the family of three not far away, her eyes filled with annoyance.
The words she spoke were also a bit harsh. “Like a dog-skin plaster, can’t even be driven away.”
Zhang Can’er glanced at her, then at the family of three, but said nothing, her face expressionless.
However, there was some good news. On the way, she had suddenly gained two more seed skills.
Healing Bean: Can treat common external injuries and colds. (Increases with level)
Itching Bean: When thrown at a target, it causes one minute of full-body itching. (Increases with level)
Both were also made from weeds.
The Itching Bean was not very useful against Mutants, but it would definitely be a killer against people.
The Healing Bean didn’t seem very useful either, but being able to treat a cold was also very good. After all, everything had stopped production in the apocalypse. Medicine was one of them and was definitely a precious item.
Thinking of this, Zhang Can’er’s mood improved. Looking at the self-heating hot pot in front of her, she felt it looked much better.
Wan Feng noticed her mood and asked with a smile, “What’s making you so happy?”
Zhang Can’er turned to look at her and said with a grin, “I got two more seeds. But this time they’re beans, a Healing Bean and an Itching Bean.”
The smile on Wan Feng’s lips widened. “Congratulations, your strength has increased again.”
But Zhang Can’er acted as if she hadn’t heard, staring at the self-heating rice in Wan Feng’s hand and swallowing. “The rice in your hand seems more fragrant.”
Wan Feng was stunned for a moment, then smiled with some embarrassment. “Then I’ll open another box for you.”
“No need.” With that, Zhang Can’er reached out and snatched Wan Feng’s spoon, scooping up a spoonful of rice and vegetables and taking a bite.
Wan Feng stared at this scene in a daze. In her eyes, all of Zhang Can’er’s movements had slowed down, especially when her pink lips pressed against the spoon. Her heart beat faster and faster.
Her face turned red, her ears also turned red, and even her neck was tinged with pink.
Wan Feng held the rice, not knowing whether to eat it or not.
Zhang Can’er chewed the rice, squinted her eyes to savor it, and was a little disappointed. There was no rice fragrance, but the texture was still good. It was just that the vegetables were not very tasty, but overall, it was okay.
When she opened her eyes, she laughed at herself. In the apocalypse, she was actually being picky. It was probably because she hadn’t gone hungry on this journey.
When she turned to look at Wan Feng, she saw her holding the rice with a red face, motionless.
Zhang Can’er smiled and poked her. “Why are you so shy? I just took a bite with your spoon. We’re so familiar with each other. There’s no need to be so distant, right?”
Wan Feng moved her head, blinked a few times, and after recovering, she forced a smile. “It’s not being distant, I’m just not used to it.”
“Oh, then you’ll have to get used to it.” With that, she took another bite with the spoon. “Mhm, the taste is still good. You should try it. My hot pot should be ready.”
While chewing the food in her mouth, she opened her self-heating hot pot. After stirring the instant noodles inside, she took a bite and felt the taste was okay. She ate some more vegetables. These vegetables were just okay, a bit too soft.
Then she turned and put some of the vegetables she thought were good into Wan Feng’s bowl. Looking at the untouched food, she frowned and said, “You’re not disgusted with me, are you?”
Wan Feng’s eyes moved. She shook her head, picked up the spoon, and took a bite. But her ears couldn’t help but feel hot. Needless to say, they must be red. She suddenly felt that she was very useless. Wasn’t this just an interaction between good friends? Why was she still so shy?
She sighed. She couldn’t figure it out, so she just stopped thinking about it.
After eating, the group took turns keeping watch. Zhang Can’er and Wan Feng were on the first watch.
Both of them were a bit tired. Zhang Can’er couldn’t hold on and fell asleep in Wan Feng’s arms.
The next morning, after eating, they set off.
After two consecutive days of travel, they could finally vaguely see the city walls of Starshine City. But the distance was still far. After all, they were taking small paths, which was equivalent to taking a detour.
At night, the group found a dilapidated house. The family of three behind them also followed them in.
Xiao Feng rolled her eyes and snorted coldly, but she still closed the door gently. After all, it wasn’t like there were no Mutants around here.
