Three years ago, Xia Weishuang’s lover died in a plane crash, their body sinking into the sea and vanishing without a trace. Three years later, in the dead of a night filled with endless rain and ceaseless thunder, there was a knock on the door of unit 702.

Looking through the peephole, she saw her long-dead girlfriend dressed in a tattered red dress. She was soaking wet, her long hair pitch-black like ink, her skin as white as paper. She was smiling stiffly, the curve of her mouth red as if painted with blood.

Xia Weishuang trembled as she gripped the door handle, an impulsive urge rising within her to open the door.

Her cousin, who was staying over, walked by in a daze and remarked, “What’s that smell? It’s so fishy.”

Xia Weishuang froze. Seeping through the cracks of the door was the damp, fishy scent of the ocean.
