Chapter 21

Only five people officially set out to find supplies, but everyone, except for the distraught Anna and the two children, helped move the car to a nearby abandoned shop to change the tire.

This group of people was both lucky and unlucky. Although the guesthouse provided them with a shelter, most of the nearby shops were clothing stores.

The nearest convenience store had been looted by some unknown group in the middle of the night. There was a fruit shop nearby, but most of the fruit had rotted, and the intact portion was not enough to meet their needs.

They could only try their luck on another street, where there was a small shopping mall with a supermarket. But to get to that street, the journey was a bit far under the siege of zombies. So they only had the courage to go out when they were huddled in the car.

Xia Weishuang was in the driver’s seat, Sang Lu in the passenger seat. Liu Damin was familiar with the area and pointed the way for them from the back seat. “There’s a noodle shop over there, the door seems to be open. Should we go in and take a look?”

Xia Weishuang shook her head. “If there’s enough in the supermarket, we’ll leave as soon as we’re done. If not, we’ll come back and look. By the way, keep an eye on the cars on the side of the road. If there’s a suitable one, we’ll drive it away. You all know how to drive, right?”

The three men in the back all knew how to drive, so there was no need to worry about that.

When the car was moving, the sound would attract zombies from all directions. Xia Weishuang was afraid of being surrounded, so she drove at a fast speed.

She had to concentrate on driving, so she left the task of finding a car to the people in the back. After all, they were the ones who needed a car.

But these three men seemed to have not yet adapted to the filth of the zombies. By the time they were almost at the small shopping mall, they still hadn’t decided which car to take.

On the one hand, there were few usable cars on the side of the road; on the other hand, they were too picky. The car door was open, the key was in the ignition, it was clearly usable, but just because there was blood inside, they didn’t want to use it.

Seeing that they were about to rush into the parking lot in front of the small shopping mall, with a string of zombies chasing behind, Xia Weishuang said, “There’s a KFC on the left side of the mall, it looks like there’s no one inside. The main entrance of the mall was closed, but the door of KFC had been smashed open. Someone must have been here before them.

There was half a minute left before they rushed into the entrance of KFC. Everyone gripped their makeshift weapons tightly.

Xia Weishuang’s expression was calm as she controlled the car’s speed. With a piercing noise, she turned the steering wheel, drifted, and braked, blocking the entrance of KFC with the car’s body.

Then they got out from the right side of the car, right into the store. They piled up the tables and chairs inside, and the brainless zombies could only paw at the car from the outside in vain.

Xia Weishuang and the others, armed with their weapons, prepared to enter the mall through the back door of KFC.

But the back door was locked. To get out, it seemed they would have to smash the back door as well.

But the sound of smashing the door would be too loud. Although the mall was very quiet, there was no guarantee that some zombies wouldn’t be attracted over.

Just then, Yang Dajun suddenly said, “I know how to pick locks. Let me do it.”

He actually took out a wire from his pocket and, like in the movies, stuck it into the keyhole and twisted it for a while, opening the padlock.

Everyone looked at him with surprise, but Yang Dajun had no intention of explaining and remained silent.

So everyone continued towards their destination.

The supermarket was on the basement level. They walked towards the elevator. It was quiet all the way, as if it were a safe fortress without zombies.

As Xia Weishuang was walking, she suddenly realized they had fallen behind. She turned around and couldn’t help but frown.

At a time like this, they were actually attracted by the gold in the mall.

“We need to hurry up and find food. We’ll leave as soon as we’re done,” Xia Weishuang reminded them.

The young male white-collar worker said, “There are no zombies here, it’s quite safe. There’s no need to be in such a hurry, right?”

Compared to these three with little experience, Xia Weishuang knew that sometimes, things couldn’t just be judged by their appearance. She said, “How can there be no zombies in such a large mall? If there are no zombies, it’s very likely that there’s something more dangerous here.”

Xia Weishuang frowned and continued to walk towards the elevator with Sang Lu.

As she walked, she noticed that this mall was not as calm and tidy as it appeared on the surface.

There were stains on the floor, walls, and counters. They looked like bloodstains, and there were some messy, small prints on them.

And this messy situation became more obvious the closer they got to the underground supermarket.

Suddenly, Xia Weishuang kicked something white. She looked down, found it strange, and crouched down, using a paper towel to pick up the white thing and look at it.

Sang Lu crouched down with her, also with a serious expression, but she was not looking at the white thing, but at Xia Weishuang.

“Why does it look like a bone?” Xia Weishuang said.

Sang Lu didn’t respond.

The elevator had long since stopped due to the power outage. Xia Weishuang and Sang Lu walked down. At the entrance of the supermarket, there were usually some shops selling cakes, duck necks, tea, and the like.

Xia Weishuang noticed that the tea shop hadn’t changed much, but the duck products and cakes were all empty.

There was nothing, as if it had been looted. It was so empty that Xia Weishuang had to wonder if these two shops had already gone out of business.
