Chapter 11
The originally flat ground was now a mess of overturned earth and stones. Cracks appeared in the concrete, some raised, some sunken. Countless rough, soil-covered tree roots danced wildly in the air, stirring up clouds of dust and unearthing rotting corpses from underground.
Human, animal, insect… all life here had been consumed by this lurking, terrifying monster.
And amidst this horrifying scene, like a frenzied dance of snakes, there was an even more terrifying presence.
It looked like a long-haired woman in a red dress, but her legs were replaced by several soft, snake-like, pale pinkish-white tentacles, making her look exceptionally tall when she stretched her arms upwards, because her body shape had already transcended human understanding.
And at this moment, this strange, near-humanoid monster was holding another long-haired woman in its arms. She had caught Xia Weishuang with her two fair, soft arms, and was looking down at her with an unchanging, stiff smile.
A strange, hoarse sound came from her throat, broken and fragmented.
And her crimson lips were curved high, as if this was how she could express her joy. Her deep purple eyes were locked on the person in her arms, as if they would never be separated again.
Xia Weishuang, as if bewitched by those demonic, deep purple eyes, was filled with a complex mix of ecstasy and surging emotions. She seemed not to see the several tentacles extending from behind Sang Lu’s back, and gently stroked the face of her lover who had been dead for three years, confirming again and again that this was not a dream, not a hallucination.
This was real, her lover.
The cool, supple skin under her hand felt a little strange. The face that filled her vision had a smile that seemed too stiff. But what did it matter? She was back, she was finally back.
Xia Weishuang choked up, unable to speak, and could only call her name over and over again, “Sang Lu, Sang Lu…”
But at this moment, Xia Weishuang had forgotten everything. The foreign object that was the source of the tree roots had not forgotten. A thick tree root, with a whistling wind, struck towards Xia Weishuang and Sang Lu with the force of a thunderbolt.
Xia Qingxue, who was lying on the ground, watched everything in terror. Her entire mind was captivated by the bizarre Sang Lu and Xia Weishuang, and she completely forgot to take this opportunity to escape. She tightly covered the mouth of the little girl in her arms, but she couldn’t help but cry out, “Sis, be careful!”
CRACK!
With a deafening sound, the tentacles behind Sang Lu’s back shot out with lightning speed and collided with the tree root. For a moment, wood splinters flew everywhere, and dust filled the air.
This sudden change brought Xia Weishuang back to her senses. She didn’t know why Sang Lu had become so strange, this form that couldn’t be explained by science, this mutation that transcended the scope of a “strange illness,” made her feel deeply confused and worried.
But this didn’t hinder her feelings for Sang Lu. Any external change could not obstruct the attraction of their souls.
And at this moment, Sang Lu suddenly turned her head and looked at the old, large willow tree in the factory.
The smile on her face receded slightly, replaced by a beast-like, alert expression. Several tentacles extended from her back and forward, dancing in the air, like the long tentacles of a jellyfish or the vines of a rose bush.
A dull, loud sound rumbled from below, like thunder. Then, countless more tree roots than before surged up!
And at this moment, the willow tree finally shed its disguise and revealed its true form. On the rough trunk, the bark was actually moving slowly, eventually forming a pattern like a wailing human face!
Between the weak prey and the most troublesome enemy, the willow tree and Sang Lu both chose the latter without hesitation.
Coincidentally, in some aspects, the two were of the same type. So, countless tree roots and tentacles whipped out, creating afterimages as they fought frantically, enveloping the entire area in a sharp, blade-like wind.
The current situation did not allow Xia Weishuang and Sang Lu to catch up. Xia Weishuang was well aware of this, but Sang Lu was still clinging to her tightly while fighting the willow tree, which made her feel terrified.
Sang Lu looked very powerful, but what if she became a burden to her?
Trapped in Sang Lu’s arms, Xia Weishuang’s hands hung loosely around her neck. She looked up at Sang Lu’s sharp, white chin, and her mind suddenly wandered.
She looked like she didn’t have a single scar on her body, as smooth as the most perfect canvas… but back then, the plane crashed, and she was buried at sea. How could she not have been injured at all?
And what had she encountered to become like this, as if she had even forgotten how to speak?
Xia Weishuang’s heart ached. She didn’t dare to speculate on what she had been through. After the joy of their reunion, a wave of guilt and regret, like an abyss, threatened to swallow her whole.
Yes, she’s back, but can I just pretend nothing happened? Will Sang Lu really forgive everything, without any resentment?
The beast that had been hidden in her heart for three years was reawakened. In the midst of great joy and sorrow, it almost threw Xia Weishuang’s mind into chaos again.
Suddenly, a scream interrupted Xia Weishuang’s almost depressive thoughts.
She followed the sound and saw a tree root suddenly pierce through Xia Qingxue’s calf, causing blood to flow all over the ground.
Xia Weishuang was both shocked and angry. She called out Little Xue’s name and tried to struggle out of Sang Lu’s arms.
Her movements attracted Sang Lu’s attention. Sang Lu looked down at her, seemingly not understanding why she wanted to leave her embrace. This was the safest place. No one was not afraid of death and pain, so why would she want to leave her?
At this moment, Xia Weishuang had not yet realized the deeper changes in Sang Lu. She anxiously watched as Xia Qingxue climbed and struggled to free herself from the tree root, pressing on her wound but having no more strength to escape the center of the battlefield.
Xia Weishuang shouted, “That’s Little Xue, my sister! Sang Lu, let me down first!”
Sang Lu’s expression still didn’t change at all. She blinked slowly, assessed the current situation, and after concluding that she could take care of Xia Weishuang under the willow tree’s attack, she bent down and placed Xia Weishuang on the ground.
A strange inspiration flashed through Xia Weishuang’s mind, but at this moment, her worry for Little Xue took precedence. She had no time to think more, got up, and limped towards Xia Qingxue.
Sang Lu turned her head and looked at her back, a little dazed, and was hit because of her distraction. She had to withdraw her reluctant gaze and focus on dealing with the willow monster.
Xia Weishuang rushed to Xia Qingxue’s side and, supporting her from under her arms, dragged her backward.
The little girl fearfully clutched the corner of her clothes, following her every step. Xia Weishuang was sweating profusely as she dragged Xia Qingxue to a corner far from the center of the battlefield.
With Sang Lu’s presence, the willow monster couldn’t spare more tree roots to attack the humans, which bought them some space to survive. After putting Little Xue down, Xia Weishuang took off her long-sleeved T-shirt, tore it into several strips with her teeth, and began to apply emergency first aid to stop the bleeding.
The wound was too deep, and the bleeding wouldn’t stop. All Xia Weishuang could do was slow down the rate of blood flow.
Xia Qingxue was pale and covered in a cold sweat, tears streaming down her face. “Sis, am I going to die?”
“You won’t,” Xia Weishuang smiled at her and said. “I won’t let you die.”
She looked at the little girl who was still clutching the corner of her clothes, then turned to face her.
Xia Weishuang reached out and held the little girl’s shoulders, saying seriously, “You have a healing ability. I don’t know if you know this already, but you really do. You can heal yourself, and you can heal others. I’m asking you to save Little Xue, just for the sake of her protecting you just now.”
The little girl looked at Xia Weishuang helplessly, seemingly not understanding what she meant.
Xia Weishuang patted her head and forced a smile. “It’s okay if you don’t know how yet. We can wait.”
She wouldn’t pin all her hopes on this young girl. The corner Xia Weishuang had found was in a concrete building that hadn’t collapsed yet. She had Xia Qingxue lie down and rest first, while she went to the place where the hooligans had gathered earlier to look for supplies.
The hooligans had said they had everything here and could get her safflower oil, so there must be other medicines!
Xia Weishuang tied another cloth strip tightly around her ankle to stop the pain and, avoiding obstacles, she navigated through the darkness with her strong memory.
As she passed the parking area, she suddenly paused.
Because of the underground tree root’s rampage, many cars were overturned. A hooligan who had tried to get to a car was trapped under it, injured but not yet dead, and was crying out pitifully for help.
Xia Weishuang turned on her heel and rushed to the hooligan’s side. As he looked at her with surprise, she grabbed his shoulders, pulled him up—and snatched his clothes before running off.
The hooligan: “I &%#@*…”
Xia Weishuang put on the clothes as she ran, then rushed into the small room where the supplies were stored. When she had created the chaos earlier, she had noticed someone coming here to fight for supplies, but she had been in a hurry to leave at the time and hadn’t come to grab any.
Xia Weishuang dug through the rubble and dirt, searching for what she needed in the pile of garbage.
Alcohol, bandages, anti-inflammatory drugs… a lighter! There were also the medicines they had taken from her! Xia Weishuang gathered them in her clothes and ran back, but she didn’t go directly to Xia Qingxue’s side.
She stood at a distance and shouted to Sang Lu, “Sang Lu!”
Sang Lu turned her head to look at her and subconsciously smiled at her.
Xia Weishuang threw a bottle of alcohol and a lighter to her, pointed to the car that had been picked up and then discarded by the tree roots, and said, “The gas tank!”
Sang Lu instantly understood her meaning. She deftly caught the alcohol and lighter with her tentacles, and after Xia Weishuang had turned and run away, she smashed the alcohol into the car, lit the car on fire with the lighter, then picked up the car and, while retracting her other tentacles, smashed it hard into the willow monster’s main body.
The willow monster, which had just developed a low-level intelligence, clearly couldn’t understand what Sang Lu was doing. It just subconsciously attacked the car that was being thrown at it, and then, the fire, fueled by the leaking gasoline, burned fiercely.
Xia Weishuang, out of breath, arrived at Xia Qingxue’s side. She used alcohol and saline to clean the dirt from her wound and disinfect it, then sprayed on Yunnan Baiyao and wrapped it with clean gauze and bandages to stop the bleeding.
There weren’t many things on hand to treat the wound, so this was all she could do for now. Fortunately, Little Xue was lucky and hadn’t injured an artery. The bleeding slowly stopped.
After treating Xia Qingxue’s wound, Xia Weishuang covered her mouth and nose and walked outside.
The fire raged, sending up thick smoke. Countless tree roots struggled in the air in their death throes. She could almost hear the monster’s silent wail.
Where is Sang Lu?
The fire is so big, did it burn her?
Her steps slowly came to a halt. From the smoke and fire ahead, a tall woman slowly walked out.
The strange, hoarse humming sound started again. The woman was beautiful yet bizarre and demonic. Her long, black hair was unadorned. She walked up to Xia Weishuang in her smoke-stained red dress, and then slowly, lifted her skirt.
