Chapter 18
“Welcome, welcome.” The one who came forward was a middle-aged woman with a kind face. She introduced herself as Liu, the owner of this guesthouse. Everyone usually called her Sister Liu.
The survivors in this guesthouse were basically all guests who were here from the beginning. Besides Xia Weishuang’s group of four, there was only one other survivor who had arrived before them.
Among them was a female university student who had come on a trip with her friend. Her friend had died, leaving her alone. There was a young couple who were still wearing exquisite makeup at a time like this. There was a grandfather and grandmother who had brought their little grandson out to play, and were lucky that nothing had happened to them. There was also a fat security guard, a young male white-collar worker, and a survivor who had escaped here before Xia Weishuang. He sat in the shadows in the corner, looking out of place with the others.
In the early stages of the zombie virus outbreak, most of the patients with fevers had either gone to the hospital or gone home. The rest had basically stayed in their rooms. As soon as they turned, Sister Liu locked the doors from the outside, so the rest of the guesthouse was surprisingly clean.
Moreover, the guesthouse usually provided food for its guests, and it had a year-round supply of food, so the survivors didn’t have to worry about food for the time being.
Sister Liu briefly introduced the names of the survivors and said with a smile, “I see you’re looking for a place to spend the night. Are you locals?”
Xia Weishuang said, “Yes, we’re locals. Thank you for your help.”
Sister Liu waved her hand and said, “It’s not easy for anyone right now. We should help each other when we can. By the way, where were you originally planning to go? Are you leaving the city?”
“We’re planning to go to our hometown in the countryside. It’s getting dark, so we’re looking for a place to spend the night first.”
Sister Liu looked out the window and said strangely, “It’s so chaotic outside now. It’s better to stay at home. If you get bitten by a zombie, it’ll be terrible. Oh my, look at your car. You must have hit a lot of zombies on the way.”
Xia Weishuang said, “Indeed. It’s just that my family is all in the countryside. At a time like this, it’s better for everyone to be together.”
Sister Liu sighed. “You’re right. There’s no electricity or internet now, so we don’t know how our families are doing. When you’re out here, your heart is always hanging.”
Most of the guests at the guesthouse were from out of town. Those who could leave after the zombie outbreak had already left. The remaining people were still a bit lucky, thinking that things wouldn’t get so bad. But day by day, things only got worse, not better.
They had been getting by day by day and had managed to survive until now.
After being cooped up for so long, they were all strangers at first, and people’s hearts gradually became restless. Sister Liu saw this and could only try her best to mediate. She still hoped that this chaos would pass quickly and everyone could return to their normal lives.
Xia Weishuang couldn’t judge whether it was better to leave the city or stay put and wait for rescue. If it weren’t for her ability, she might be dead by now. But even she couldn’t perfectly predict the future that each choice would lead to, so how could she persuade others?
So she just smiled and didn’t try to persuade them.
Sister Liu looked at the four of them and said, “I still have a double room left. Why don’t you squeeze in?”
Having an intact room and bed to rest in, Xia Weishuang was already very satisfied and quickly thanked her.
Just then, the guesthouse’s security guard, who was also Sister Liu’s nephew, Liu Damin, a somewhat fat, tall man, came over and said, “We’re running out of food. We have to go out and buy some. Weren’t we worried about not having a car before? Now we can just borrow their car.”
Xia Qingxue was straightforward and said, “Where can you buy vegetables now? You might find some food if you rummage through a convenience store.”
Liu Damin said, “That’s fine too. We can’t just sit here and eat up all our supplies.”
Xia Weishuang didn’t mind lending them the car, but the tire was flat, so it couldn’t be used without being changed.
She told him the truth, but Liu Damin didn’t believe her. “The tire is flat? How did you get here just now?”
Xia Weishuang didn’t really want to explain this. She took the car keys out of her pocket and threw them to Liu Damin. “If you don’t believe me, you can go and see for yourself. Coincidentally, I’d be very grateful if you could change the tire.”
Liu Damin was skeptical. He took the keys but didn’t go out immediately. Instead, he went upstairs and observed the parked car from the window. The car was indeed a bit tilted. He was a little discouraged.
Because changing a tire meant staying outside for a while, and during that time, it would be very dangerous if a zombie came over.
He himself was tall and strong, but he was a little scared, let alone expecting others. And now it was dark. Even if they were to change the tire, they would have to wait until morning.
“I thought we had a car to use, but it’s a piece of junk.” The voice that had expressed dissatisfaction when Xia Weishuang and the others came in spoke up again. “We didn’t have much food to begin with, and now there are four more people. Tomorrow, it’ll be even less.”
The one who said this was the girl in the young couple. The two of them were very clingy and dressed very fashionably. They were originally an internet celebrity couple who had come here on a trip and ended up being trapped.
Sister Liu had introduced them earlier. The girl was called Anna, and the boy was called Ye Chen.
This kind of chuunibyou-style name sounded like an online alias, but it didn’t matter at a time like this.
Xia Weishuang didn’t really like to argue with others and said calmly, “We have our own food. We won’t be freeloading off Sister Liu.”
As soon as she said this, Anna’s face fell. She couldn’t help but say, “I’ve paid for the room.”
Xia Weishuang said strangely, “I said ‘we.’ When did I say ‘you’?”
Anna: “…”
Ye Chen protected his girlfriend and said, “Tsk, tsk, tsk, some people just like to pretend to be rich when they’re poor. They don’t even have enough shoes to wear, and they still have the nerve to brag.”
His eyes suddenly fell on Sang Lu, and then more people followed his gaze to Sang Lu.
The guesthouse was lit by candles, and the light was dim. At first, no one noticed that Sang Lu wasn’t wearing shoes, but now that it had been pointed out, they couldn’t help but look.
Sang Lu, however, didn’t seem uncomfortable at all. In fact, not only was she not wearing shoes, but her clothes were also a bit tattered, making her look very miserable.
It was just that her attitude was too leisurely, and her appearance was too stunning. At a glance, no one paid attention to what she was wearing.
And now that they noticed, they couldn’t help but admire her mental fortitude.
Xia Weishuang frowned and stood in front of Sang Lu.
Sister Liu quickly tried to smooth things over. “Alright, alright, it’s getting late. Everyone, finish your dinner and go to rest. Little Xia, you eat something too. It’s not easy for anyone. We should help each other.”
“Really, no need,” Xia Weishuang said. “We’re already very grateful that you can provide a place to rest.”
If this group of people still planned to stay here and wait for rescue, then it was better to avoid consuming too much food.
She gave Xia Qingxue a look, and Xia Qingxue, under the cover of her backpack, took out a few packets of instant noodles. These were rescued from the factory that had been occupied by the hooligans.
Seeing that they really had food, Sister Liu didn’t insist.
And the food provided here by Sister Liu was relatively simple. Rice and pickled vegetables were dinner. After all, there really wasn’t much food left. But they had an advantage, which was that they had gas and could cook hot food.
Xia Weishuang borrowed some hot water and bowls and chopsticks and made the instant noodles.
Instant noodles were not very nutritious, but their biggest advantage was that they were fragrant!
Eating too much would get old, but smelling instant noodles after several days of scrimping and saving, and eating from a big pot every meal, was a whole other story.
The rich smell of spicy beef noodles kept wafting into people’s noses. Even if they were eating large mouthfuls of rice, they still couldn’t block this mouth-watering aroma.
Pairs of eyes silently stared at the bowls in the hands of Xia Weishuang and the others. Red oil floated on the dark soup, and the yellowish-orange noodles made one’s mouth water. For a moment, the rice in their bowls was no longer fragrant.
Ye Chen stared at the instant noodles and swallowed. He was not short of money and had never been so wronged before, so his willpower was particularly weak.
Although Anna had also wronged her tongue, she was used to dieting, and her willpower was much stronger than her boyfriend’s. Seeing this, she fiercely pinched Ye Chen’s waist. “What are you looking at? Am I not good-looking?”
Ye Chen reluctantly withdrew his gaze. “You said it yourself…”
The young couple started to bicker, but it didn’t affect Xia Weishuang’s group at all.
Xia Weishuang brought the instant noodles to Sang Lu’s mouth. “Do you want some?”
Since Sang Lu had returned, she hadn’t seen her eat anything. She didn’t know if her taste had changed, or if the food she needed was no longer this kind of ordinary thing.
Sang Lu glanced at her, didn’t eat the instant noodles, but reached out and took a small, shiny stone from Xia Weishuang’s breast pocket, and with a whoosh, threw it into her mouth.
Crunch, crunch.
Xia Qingxue was dumbfounded.
Xia Weishuang said worriedly, “So you like to eat this. Little Xue, take some more out. Be good, Sang Lu. I’ll wash it for you with hot water first.”
Xia Qingxue: “…” Was the point whether it was clean or not?!
Mi Lele brought her bowl forward and picked out the noodles with her chopsticks, putting them in Xia Weishuang’s bowl. “Sister, you eat. I can’t eat this much.”
How much was in a bowl of instant noodles? After removing the soup, there was only that much noodles. Even a child with a slightly larger appetite wouldn’t have enough.
Xia Weishuang patted Mi Lele’s hair and said, “Thank you, Lele, but Lele is still growing. You need to supplement with some protein.” She stopped Mi Lele from continuing to put noodles in her bowl and gave Xia Qingxue a look.
Xia Qingxue gave an “okay” sign with her fingers, peeled a marinated egg, and threw it into Mi Lele’s bowl.
Mi Lele blushed and ate the noodles in small bites. “Thank you, sister.”
Perhaps because they were eating the noodles so fragrantly, that night, everyone silently ate faster.
Finish eating quickly, go to bed early. When you’re asleep, you won’t think about it.
Before going upstairs, the young couple was still arguing.
After dinner, Xia Weishuang had the other three go back to rest first. Although Lele was helping to treat Xia Qingxue’s injury, it was a serious one and wouldn’t heal in a short time. Sang Lu was also too eye-catching, and Xia Weishuang didn’t want too many people to pay attention to her. In short, she stayed behind to help wash the dishes and only went upstairs after that.
Xia Weishuang didn’t expect that when she walked up to the third floor, she would see an incredibly exciting scene in the hallway.
Ye Chen was leaning against the wall with his arms crossed, shamelessly trying to flirt with the indifferent Sang Lu. “Hey, beautiful, are they bullying you? They don’t even give you shoes to wear. Don’t be afraid, I’m the kind of person who always helps the weak. If you need any help, just tell me.”
