Monster Girlfriend(Apocalypse) 44

Chapter 44

Xia Weishuang turned on the flashlight and, using its light, hooked a few high-strength fishing lines to the bottom of the roller shutter door, then fixed the other end of the fishing lines to the ground.

Then Xia Weishuang pulled the hand crank and slowly pulled up the roller shutter door. As the door opened, the active zombies nearby were attracted by the sound and the smell of living people, and they all turned around and rushed over.

Xia Weishuang stopped when the roller shutter door was high enough for the car to enter and exit. At this time, the fishing lines were taut.

After nightfall, the zombies became more and more active and ran very fast. After Xia Weishuang had done all this, she immediately returned to the driver’s seat, started the car, and moved forward slightly, leaving a little distance behind.

Swish, swish…

Under the high-speed impact, the sharp and strong fishing lines cut into the flesh, almost as easily as cutting tofu. A normal person would not be so stupid as to charge at a thin and tough fishing line with all their might, but a zombie would, especially when a living person was right in front of them.

They could not feel pain. They stubbornly stretched out their hands and struggled forward, but this only made the damage from the fishing lines even deeper. The flesh was already close to rotting. After being cut like this, and with them constantly moving, soon, the ground was covered with pieces of meat and pus.

Under the pressure of the zombies, the fishing lines made a creaking sound. Xia Weishuang looked back and silently estimated.

Then she put the car in reverse and watched the zombies’ death throes with a cold eye.

Thump, thud. A head fell to the ground.

The fishing lines could not cut through the zombies’ skulls, but with the zombies’ full effort, cutting their necks was not a problem.

With the first head, there would be the first arm, and the first leg to follow.

Of course, it was still not enough to just rely on this to wipe out these few zombies. Although the fishing lines were very sharp, the place where they were tied was not strong enough.

And sure enough, this killing net made of fishing lines finally could not hold on and collapsed. The zombies excitedly panted and pounced in. Due to the constant forward pressure, out of inertia, the zombies that were lucky enough not to have their heads fall off also fell forward and landed on the ground.

Xia Weishuang timely reversed the car, and with a bumpy ride, she ran over the zombies. Then she turned the car around and drove away.

The night was beautiful, the moonlight was beautiful, and the smell of human flesh was also beautiful. Only the zombies who had worked so hard and were not afraid of the flying flesh and blood to rush into the fishing tackle shop were not beautiful at all.

**

In the car, Xia Weishuang was talking to the Sang Lu in her illusion.

This time, she had changed into a red mermaid evening dress, simple and elegant, intellectual and graceful. This dress was a bit like the one Xia Weishuang had given her, but it was also different.

This red mermaid evening dress was the one Sang Lu was wearing when Xia Weishuang first saw her.

It was at the freshman welcoming party, when Sang Lu was the host. At that time, the two of them did not know each other. Xia Weishuang was sitting in the audience, squeezed in the crowd of freshmen, without any sense of presence.

Sang Lu did not see her, but Xia Weishuang saw her, and was stunned. It was as if all the light on the stage had gathered on this beautiful girl.

Xia Weishuang had never told Sang Lu that she had actually had a good impression of her before she even knew her. The stunning glimpse at their first meeting had left a deep impression on Xia Weishuang’s heart. Later, she had given her a red dress, and it was not without the influence of their first meeting.

“Who is this person?” At that time, Xia Weishuang had asked her roommate. God knows how abnormal this was for the introverted Xia Weishuang.

Her roommate was also a freshman, so how would she know? She shook her head and said, “If you want to know her, you can go backstage and ask after the party.”

“No.” Doing something different often meant endless trouble later. Xia Weishuang shook her head and still chose to retreat.

So they had missed a year. When they thought about it later, they would often feel a little regretful.

But fortunately, after going around in circles, they had met again.

Xia Weishuang did not like to socialize with unnecessary people, nor did she think that she would meet someone who was willing to tolerate everything about her.

She was engrossed in her studies and had excellent grades, so although she was low-key and silent, there were still people who were willing to get in touch with her and had sent her an invitation to join a project team as a translator.

University life meant a new kind of growth. Although Xia Weishuang was introverted and silent, she was not resistant to seeing more things, so she had agreed, and it was fortunate that she had agreed.

In this group, there was Sang Lu.

When Xia Weishuang met Sang Lu again, she suddenly had a feeling of fate.

Sang Lu was wearing a beige windbreaker that day and was sitting behind a table. The first thing she said when she saw Xia Weishuang was, “Do you know me?”

Xia Weishuang subconsciously shook her head, and Sang Lu couldn’t help but laugh.

Sang Lu said, “But I know you, Xia Weishuang. Actually, it was my idea to invite you to join.”

Xia Weishuang was a little surprised. She had no idea where she had ever had any contact with Sang Lu. If the freshman welcoming party counted, then it could only be half.

Sang Lu said with great interest, “Are you surprised? A girl like you with excellent grades and good looks will always be noticed by many people, even if you don’t know it yourself. Hello, my name is Sang Lu. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”

She took the initiative to extend her hand. Xia Weishuang hesitated for a moment, then slowly shook it.

That hand was soft and warm.

Completely different from now.

Now, the illusory Sang Lu, wearing the red mermaid evening dress that Sang Lu had worn when Xia Weishuang first saw her, was sitting beside her.

“Her speed is too fast,” Sang Lu said as calmly and steadily as she remembered. “And her sense of smell is extremely sensitive. Just using zombie fluid to cover the car is not enough.”

After entering the city, the number of zombies had increased greatly. Although there were many cars on the side of the road, it was still too risky for her to get a new one by herself.

She had to adopt a more cautious strategy, trying to shake off and bypass the zombies as much as possible, instead of directly hitting them.

Sang Lu was silent for a while and said, “You know what to do.”

The previous sleep and the supplement of the crystals had restored a lot of Xia Weishuang’s energy, enough to support her in finding a new shelter.

But she did not answer Sang Lu’s words, as if she did not dare to be distracted.

Sang Lu sighed softly and said, “You rely on me too much.”

Xia Weishuang’s eyes turned red, and her voice was a little hoarse. “You will always be with me, right?”

So Sang Lu said, “Yes.”

Xia Weishuang knew in her heart what to do next. In essence, the Sang Lu beside her was just an illusion she had created based on her memory of Sang Lu. Even though it looked so vivid and real, it still had no soul.

She would only express herself according to Xia Weishuang’s deepest desires and memories. Even so, Xia Weishuang still hoped that she could talk to her more.

It was like dreaming. People in a dream often don’t realize that they are dreaming. Even if the dream is illusory, and the dream is just a story created by the brain based on memory and a person’s psychology, the emotions generated in the dream are still so real.

So Sang Lu said, “You need to cover your scent more tightly. Perfume, medicated oil, or mosquito repellent are all good.”

“Secondly, you need to find another safe place to rest.”

“And, you know that ordinary physical attacks have no effect on her. You need to prepare other self-defense methods.”

Xia Weishuang did as she was told. She rushed into a shop on the side of the road, took a few bottles of mosquito repellent, and ran. She was very fast. After getting into the car, she immediately sprayed this strong-smelling liquid all over her body.

“Cough, cough, cough…”

In the enclosed space, Xia Weishuang almost choked to death. She couldn’t help but cough, pinching her nose and sneezing, until tears almost came out of her eyes.

Xia Weishuang was extremely depressed and had to put on a mask to avoid being suffocated.

At this time, she was already far away from the fishing tackle shop where she had rested earlier.

Then Xia Weishuang prepared to find a suitable place to hide and rest. But in fact, there were not many places where she could drive in and hide. The more at a time like this, the harder it was to find a suitable one.

She began to feel a little anxious. Sang Lu beside her gently stroked her long hair and said, “Calm down. If you can’t find the most suitable one, then lower your requirements.”

BANG!

Another loud bang. A zombie suddenly rammed her from the side, causing the car to swerve, and the direction of travel also went askew.

This zombie’s strength is so great!

Xia Weishuang turned her head and saw a pair of scarlet and ferocious eyes.

Her heart skipped a beat, and she immediately realized that this was an even more ferocious evolved zombie!

The zombie had climbed onto the car. Its two hands had sharp nails, which at first glance looked like ten small steel knives. They scraped against the car, making a piercing sound of metal friction.

Crap, it can destroy the car! Sparks flew from the place where the nails had scraped against the car body. Xia Weishuang gritted her teeth, floored the accelerator, and rushed forward. At the next intersection, she made a sharp turn and used the impact to throw the evolved zombie off.

However, the evolved zombie was chasing her relentlessly from behind. Its speed was not inferior to Xia Weishuang’s car at all. It was probably not long before it would catch up again!

Xia Weishuang didn’t have much time to choose slowly. Just as she was about to rush the car into a shop that had no steps and could be entered.

A deafening “meow” suddenly came from the front. A long-haired beast the size of a truck appeared in front of Xia Weishuang.

At a glance, this beast looked like a giant tiger, but its fur was black… it was a mutated black cat!

When she saw this huge, almost sky-covering mutated black cat, Xia Weishuang was almost in despair. This cat was too huge. With this tonnage, it could probably flip the car with one paw.

Let alone rushing up and running the cat over. If she were to run into it, it would be a suicide attack!

But there was no choice. It was too close, and the car’s speed was too high. It was almost impossible to go around it.

With a strange beast in front and a zombie behind, maybe… it would be better to be eaten by Sang Lu.

Xia Weishuang’s face was pale and she bit her lower lip. Her foot was on the brake and she was about to press down hard when she saw the huge mutated black cat in front of her leap up and jump over her car.

Xia Weishuang was taken aback. The force of her braking slowed down, and she did not press down completely.

THUD!

The heavy black cat jumped up and landed, shaking the entire street.

Xia Weishuang looked back and was surprised to find that the mutated black cat’s target was not her, but that evolved zombie!

The two of them actually started to fight. The battle was fierce and very exciting.

What was going on? Could it be that mutated beasts were actually not interested in humans, and the zombie’s crystal core was more attractive to them?

Xia Weishuang couldn’t stay where she was and watch the battle. She hardened her heart and took this opportunity to escape.

But she still felt very strange, so she would glance in the rearview mirror from time to time. Xia Weishuang saw that the mutated black cat had the upper hand. It seemed that it would be the final victor.

Then Xia Weishuang left this street, turned a corner, and breathed a sigh of relief.

But then, a heavy thudding sound that made the ground tremble came quickly from behind, making her face change again.

The mutated black cat was chasing her!

Another leap, and the black cat blocked Xia Weishuang’s way.

Xia Weishuang had to brake hard. Fortunately, she was wearing a seatbelt, so nothing happened.

Strange, why did it chase her again? The first target was a zombie, and the second target was a human?

The mutated black cat stretched out its paw and poked Xia Weishuang’s car. It was heavy and didn’t move much, so it poked it again.

The black cat: “Meow~”

Xia Weishuang: “…”

Could it be that it was treating the car as a toy like a sisal ball?

Xia Weishuang’s expression was a little strange. Before, she had been seriously ill. To save herself, she had volunteered at a stray cat shelter in A City and would often go there to help take care of the cats.

In fact, she herself liked cats very much, but at that time, she couldn’t even take care of herself, let alone adopt one. She could only help out at the shelter and play with the cats. At such times, she would always feel much better, as if she could feel the meaning of life again.

It was also at the shelter that she had met a very good friend, Bai Qian.

When the zombie virus had just broken out, she had wanted to call Bai Qian, but unfortunately, she couldn’t get through. She didn’t know how she was now.

It was not a good idea to keep hiding in the car. With a few swipes from this mutated black cat, the car would be scrapped, and then she in the car would also be scrapped.

Xia Weishuang could only muster her courage, open the car door, and get out.

I hope this cat is only interested in the car, and not in me.

But this time, she had bet wrong again.

The mutated black cat’s eyes, as big as car headlights, followed Xia Weishuang’s movements. It seemed to be extremely interested in her. Xia Weishuang stood by the car door, which was not yet closed.

She was thinking, should she get back in the car?

Just at this moment, the mutated black cat in front of her suddenly meowed. The whole cat suddenly sprang up and rushed towards Xia Weishuang.

It’s over! With this tonnage, I’m going to be crushed!

But in fact, Xia Weishuang was not crushed. As the black cat flew over, its body rapidly shrank, and finally returned to the size of a normal cat. It rushed into Xia Weishuang’s arms like a small meatball, knocking her back a step.

Xia Weishuang held the soft and warm cat and suddenly felt that it was very familiar.

A thought came to her. She tentatively called out, “Coal Ball?”

The black cat rubbed against her in her arms and was about to meow coquettishly when it sneezed.

“Pfft!”

Another sneeze.

And then another sneeze.

Xia Weishuang quickly put the black cat on the ground, awkwardly pulled down her mask, and said, “Sorry, I sprayed a little too much mosquito repellent… Achoo!”

Coal Ball stared at her with its big, round, golden-yellow eyes, looking at her pitifully.

Xia Weishuang silently pulled her mask back up.

At the same time, she thought, Coal Ball is a very affectionate cat in the shelter. Since Coal Ball can still recognize me after mutating, doesn’t attack me, and even protects me.

Then, will it also protect others?

For example, Bai Qian.

Coal Ball seemed to have guessed Xia Weishuang’s thoughts. It hooked Xia Weishuang’s calf with its tail and was about to take her somewhere.

Three years ago, Xia Weishuang’s lover died in a plane crash, their body sinking into the sea and vanishing without a trace. Three years later, in the dead of a night filled with endless rain and ceaseless thunder, there was a knock on the door of unit 702.

Looking through the peephole, she saw her long-dead girlfriend dressed in a tattered red dress. She was soaking wet, her long hair pitch-black like ink, her skin as white as paper. She was smiling stiffly, the curve of her mouth red as if painted with blood.

Xia Weishuang trembled as she gripped the door handle, an impulsive urge rising within her to open the door.

Her cousin, who was staying over, walked by in a daze and remarked, "What’s that smell? It’s so fishy."

Xia Weishuang froze. Seeping through the cracks of the door was the damp, fishy scent of the ocean.

I’m wondering if this is a metaphor for Xia Weishuang letting go of Sang Lu and not letting her affect her current relationships… or I’m just reading way to much into it lol
