Chapter 8
The main road out of A City was surprisingly congested.
At first, Xia Weishuang and Xia Qingxue thought it was a car accident. After all, they often saw abandoned vehicles with blood splattered inside on the road now. Their journey so far hadn’t been smooth, and they often had to take the risk of deliberately crashing into cars and zombies.
Xia Qingxue’s driving skills had improved rapidly, and her tolerance for certain gory and nauseating scenes had also risen sharply.
But soon, the two discovered it wasn’t a car accident, but someone blocking the road ahead.
Having lived in a society governed by law for a long time, their first reaction was traffic police checking cars, but they knew that was impossible.
Because they were far away, they were lined up behind other cars, moving slowly. For a while, they couldn’t see what was happening at the very front. But as they got closer, Xia Weishuang opened the car window and stuck her head out to look, and she saw something that made her uneasy.
“What’s wrong?”
Xia Qingxue noticed her cousin’s expression was a bit grave and couldn’t help but ask.
Xia Weishuang unbuckled her seatbelt to relax a bit and said, “It looks like someone is collecting a toll up ahead.”
Xia Qingxue looked incredulous. “Huh?! What time is it for them to be collecting a toll?”
Xia Weishuang glanced at the bag in the back seat and said, “There’s a toll for these times, and gold is a hard currency at any time.”
Xia Qingxue gripped the steering wheel, a little angry. “They’re blocking the road, aren’t they afraid of attracting zombies!”
Xia Weishuang pinched her fingers and frowned. “They’re not afraid, probably because they have something to rely on.”
By now, Xia Qingxue could also see clearly what was happening ahead. A group of young people who clearly weren’t up to any good were blocking the front, using abandoned vehicles to block one side of the road, leaving only the other side for cars to pass. And they had their own cars, ready to block the road completely at any time.
Their leader was very conspicuous, with a head of striking yellow hair. He sat on top of the pile of wrecked car barricades, legs crossed, with a look of arrogant disdain.
And clustered below him, besides thirteen or fourteen delinquent-looking young men and women who were clearly his accomplices, there were also three pretty girls trembling with fear.
The three girls looked like they had been kidnapped, and they didn’t seem to know each other.
It was worth noting that not far from them lay several charred corpses.
This group of hooligans were all armed with weapons like iron bars and looked very tough. Under these circumstances, it was clear that no one wanted to waste time provoking them. Most chose to give up some supplies in exchange for the right to leave safely.
But as Xia Qingxue said, with so many of them staying in such an open place, even on a wide, sparsely populated road, they would sooner or later attract zombies.
And sure enough, a few zombies came staggering over. Stimulated by the strong scent of living people, they howled and charged towards the group of hooligans.
The hooligans, holding their iron bars, showed no fear. Just then, a flash of fire shot out from the hands of the yellow-haired man on top, hitting a zombie in the face like a bomb and exploding.
Then a red-haired hooligan displayed astonishing strength. He held a steel bar about two meters long and easily swept a zombie off its feet.
The other hooligans took the opportunity to rush forward. With their superior numbers, they quickly finished off the zombies.
The yellow-haired man shot out another flash of fire, burning the zombies to a crisp.
Their actions undoubtedly shocked many people. These were espers, living espers right before their eyes.
After that, no one dared to resist anymore.
Soon, it was Xia Weishuang and Xia Qingxue’s turn. Four hooligans blocked their car in front, banging on the hood with steel pipes. Among them was the red-haired one. “Open the door!”
Xia Qingxue bit her lip, her face full of indignation. Xia Weishuang pressed her hand, signaling her not to be impulsive. “Do as they say.”
The car door was opened. The red-haired hooligan leader unceremoniously pulled out the bag from the back and started rummaging through it. Xia Qingxue watched as the things she and her cousin had worked so hard and risked their lives to bring out were taken one by one. The pain was unbearable. “That’s enough, isn’t it? You didn’t take this much from the ones before!”
Unexpectedly, as soon as Xia Qingxue spoke, the hooligan suddenly stopped rummaging through the bag, opened the front car door, and leaned in to look at Xia Qingxue’s face.
Xia Qingxue was startled by him and subconsciously glared at the red-haired man.
The red-haired man immediately smiled, then his gaze shifted to Xia Weishuang, and he whistled. “Hey, ladies, just the two of you?”
Xia Qingxue felt uneasy. Xia Weishuang spoke before she could, turning her head and calmly saying to the greasy red-haired hooligan, “My uncle and the others are behind us. What’s the matter? The cars are all waiting to go. Take the things and let us pass.”
The red-haired hooligan stared at her for a moment, then suddenly straightened up and said, “It’s so dangerous in these times. Letting two girls travel alone, they really don’t care about you at all. But don’t worry, we brothers will protect you.”
Hearing him say this, Xia Weishuang knew it was bad. This group of hooligans not only planned to collect a toll, but they were also planning to take both the people and the goods. Xia Qingxue also understood the implication and was so angry she wanted to floor the accelerator and run them over.
Xia Weishuang sensed her cousin’s thoughts, pursed her lips, and grabbed Little Xue’s hand. “Don’t. There’s a car in front.”
Next to the barricade was a truck with some of the hooligans in it, ready to block the road completely at any time. They would only move it after the toll was paid.
With the small car they were driving now, forcing their way through would be a Pyrrhic victory at best.
The hooligans surrounding the car were eyeing them with ill intent. Xia Weishuang and Xia Qingxue, knowing when to yield, had no choice but to cooperate and get out of the car, standing with the other three girls.
The car was driven to the side by the red-haired man. The supplies in their bag were mostly taken. Seemingly to appease them, they were left with two bottles of water and some chocolate in their personal small bags.
Xia Weishuang’s hand was in her coat pocket, where there was a bottle of sleeping pills.
They stood under the scorching sun, feeling dizzy and exhausted. To ensure their safety on the road, both of them were wearing long sleeves and long pants. In this sweltering summer, they were already drenched in sweat.
Xia Weishuang felt like she was about to get heatstroke.
Around four in the afternoon, the yellow-haired man, who had been acting cool under the sun, finally jumped down, waved his hand, and led his people away.
It seemed they didn’t dare to risk staying until dark.
The few kidnapped girls were locked in the back of the truck. The environment was incredibly stuffy. Accompanied by the girls’ sobs, Xia Weishuang felt a terrible headache.
Xia Qingxue sadly clutched the corner of Xia Weishuang’s clothes. “Sis, what do we do?”
Xia Weishuang said, “We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.”
“Aren’t you scared?”
“…I am.” Although she said that, Xia Weishuang still comforted Xia Qingxue. “We’ll find a way. As long as we’re alive, there’s hope.”
Xia Qingxue was silent for a while, then said, “I wish I had an ability too.”
Xia Weishuang, who had an ability, had no combat power. Xia Qingxue, who knew jujutsu, was outnumbered. For a moment, she felt utterly hopeless.
About half an hour later, the truck stopped.
The back of the truck was opened. After getting out, Xia Weishuang found that they had arrived at a small factory surrounded by high walls. It had clearly been set up to be easy to defend and hard to attack. The inside had also been cleaned up. Although there were still brown bloodstains on the ground, the stench of rotting corpses was very faint.
A total of five girls were pushed into a concrete flat-roofed building. Xia Qingxue kept her head down, looking listless.
At the door, the red-haired man who was counting supplies on the other side suddenly came over and patted Xia Qingxue’s shoulder. “You, come here.”
Xia Weishuang and Xia Qingxue were both stunned.
The red-haired man grabbed Xia Qingxue’s wrist and, smiling, pulled her to the side. He was a strength-type esper, and his strength was terrifyingly great. Xia Qingxue was pulled over in an instant.
But of course, she was extremely unwilling. She subconsciously reached out and grabbed the door of a passing car. “Let go!”
But the red-haired man enjoyed the sight of his prey struggling and, with a wicked sense of humor, pulled her bit by bit.
Xia Weishuang was trembling with anger. She took a few steps forward and tried to pull the red-haired man’s hand away. Of course, she knew her strength was no match for his. In fact, Xia Weishuang was praying that her unreliable ability would work again, giving her a chance to fight back.
The red-haired man whistled lewdly. “Is the young lady jealous? Don’t worry, you can keep me company tonight instead.”
Xia Weishuang said coldly, “Okay.”
Her ability didn’t work. But it didn’t matter. She could still gamble on her identity as an esper.
The red-haired man was stunned, then he laughed, letting go of Xia Qingxue’s hand to grab Xia Weishuang.
Xia Qingxue’s suppressed anger finally erupted. “Get lost!”
The hand she was gripping the car with suddenly found nothing. She tried to push the red-haired man forward but ended up falling backward herself. The huge car instantly vanished without a trace. Xia Qingxue fell to the ground and passed out.
The factory was silent.
Just then, the yellow-haired leader also walked over, looking at the unconscious Xia Qingxue on the ground and the vanished car in astonishment. “An esper?”
Not just them, Xia Weishuang was also extremely surprised.
She ignored the red-haired man and crouched down to check Xia Qingxue’s head. She found only a small bump on her head and breathed a sigh of relief.
The yellow-haired and red-haired men whispered to each other for a moment, then suddenly changed their minds.
Compared to venting their desires, it was of course better to have an esper willingly become their accomplice. If she wasn’t willing, it wouldn’t be too late to use other means.
So, Xia Weishuang and Xia Qingxue were locked in a room by themselves.
