Chapter 61
Xia Weishuang searched the entire house and found a few bags of small snacks in the bedroom drawer.
She ate two bags of shrimp crackers and biscuits to fill her stomach, and left half for Bai Qian.
She was wearing the female owner’s old clothes, which were a little ill-fitting. They were a bit small for Xia Weishuang, but they should fit Bai Qian.
Xia Weishuang had cut her hair short, just to her shoulders. Otherwise, it would not be easy to dry after washing, and it would be inconvenient to move around.
She held a flashlight in her mouth and cut her hair with scissors in the damp bathroom. Black hair fell to the floor. The mirror reflected the halo of the flashlight, distorted and blurry. Xia Weishuang’s haircutting skills were clumsy and terrible. Fortunately, she was not that concerned about her appearance.
Xia Weishuang put the dirty clothes and trash that the two of them had changed out of into a plastic bag, burned the broken hair, and then cleaned the room a little. She took out another small, thin quilt from the cabinet, dried her hair, and then fell asleep exhaustedly next to Bai Qian.
She didn’t know how long she had slept. Xia Weishuang was woken up by the movement next to her.
In her half-asleep state, she thought Sang Lu had come after her again. She raised her head in panic, only to see Bai Qian slowly getting up in the darkness to drink water.
There was only a little cold boiled water on the bedside table. Xia Weishuang handed her two more bags of snacks. “How are you feeling?”
Bai Qian smiled weakly, leaned against the headboard, and did not dare to press on her injured shoulder. “Much better, but I still have a bit of a headache and no energy. What about you?”
“I’m fine.”
“Pull open the curtains. I’ll take a look at the wound on your back.”
After pulling open the curtains, the dim room immediately became bright. She didn’t know what time it was.
“You cut your hair?” Bai Qian saw Xia Weishuang’s shortened hair at a glance and was a little surprised, but she quickly calmed down and didn’t say much. “It looks pretty good.”
Xia Weishuang smiled and said, “It’s cooler to cut it in the summer.”
Xia Weishuang pulled down her clothes and turned her back to Bai Qian. She also reached out and touched it. There was a dry and hard scab on her back, and when she moved too much, there would be a stinging pain from the wound tearing.
Bai Qian smiled. “As expected, young people have a good constitution.”
Xia Weishuang pulled up her clothes and brought the medicine over. “Take the medicine first.”
“Is that all?”
“Yes,” Xia Weishuang said. “There’s almost no food. I’ll go out with Coal Ball to find some later. You can rest here for now.”
Bai Qian shook her head and said, “We’ve finally avoided Sang Lu. Let’s find a safer place first.”
Although Xia Weishuang was weak from hunger, she could still hold on for a while. She was just worried about Bai Qian. “Are you really okay?”
Bai Qian said, “Let’s find a car downstairs. Don’t worry, I’m not that fragile.”
“Alright then. Let’s find another place first.”
Fortunately, they still had Coal Ball to help them. Even though they were very weak now, they could still protect themselves. Xia Weishuang packed up the things in the room and took the dirty clothes with her.
The two of them changed into new protective suits, put on their masks, and went downstairs to find a new car and drive away.
Because they couldn’t drive without a key like in the movies, it took some effort to find a car. As soon as she got in the car, Xia Weishuang turned on the air conditioner, otherwise it would be hot enough to kill someone.
On the way, they passed by a supermarket, a fruit shop, and a small restaurant. Unfortunately, these places had basically been looted. Now, if they wanted to find food, they had to either risk going to a place with many zombies, or patiently search in a remote place.
Xia Weishuang and Bai Qian had no energy now. Their main goal was to find a safe hiding place, so they didn’t waste much time looking for food.
The two of them’s next hiding place was also a residential area, far from Ankang Hospital. It would take three or four hours to drive there.
As before, they needed to choose a residential house with an open door. However, such houses either had rotting corpses inside and the whole house stank, or they were a mess and all the useful things in the house had been taken away.
Xia Weishuang had a flash of inspiration and tried to search the zombies that were wandering in the corridor. Sure enough, she found the key to an intact house.
At this point, they could be said to have a safe house where they could stay for a few more days.
Xia Weishuang searched the house as usual and found that there was no ready-to-eat food. Some of the vegetables and meat had long since rotted, and there was no fire to cook the rice and noodles.
So Xia Weishuang was about to go out to find food, but Bai Qian stopped her.
“Let Coal Ball go.”
“But I want to find some more medicine while I’m at it. There’s not enough medicine.”
“It’s okay. Coal Ball will take care of it.”
Xia Weishuang was a little surprised. “Is Coal Ball that smart?”
Bai Qian smiled mysteriously and said, “You’ll know later.”
After wiping Coal Ball and letting it out, Xia Weishuang cleaned the dusty room, aired it out briefly, and then closed the doors and windows tightly, and sealed the cracks in the windows with cloth strips.
After they were done, the two of them took off their protective suits.
In the evening, a soft meow suddenly came from outside the door. Xia Weishuang went to open the door and was surprised to see that it was not just Coal Ball that had returned, but also more than a dozen cats following behind it.
Almost every cat had something in its mouth. Coal Ball was the most powerful. It had turned into the size of a small leopard and had directly carried a bag back on its back.
“Orange, Coke, Duoduo…”
Xia Weishuang was both surprised and happy, and quickly let them in.
They had brought back food, drinks, and medicine, which was a great help. The pressure on Xia Weishuang was immediately lightened.
But Bai Qian was a little worried. “But if they go out again, will they attract Sang Lu again? You said her sense of smell is very sensitive.”
Xia Weishuang looked at the dozen or so cats in front of her. A thought suddenly came to her. “Sang Lu shouldn’t be able to notice the shore for the time being. But we should indeed make preparations in advance. It’s best to make it so that she can’t find us even if she comes ashore.”
“How?” Bai Qian was still very weak and had no energy leaning against the bed, but she was still listening carefully to Xia Weishuang’s suggestion.
Xia Weishuang cracked her knuckles and said, “The plan to mislead her to leave with the zombies failed before. One reason was that it was too hasty, and the other was that the target was too obvious. Sang Lu could tell if it was real with just one look.”
“So this time, we need to improve. We need to set more smoke bombs, and we need to be hidden enough so that Sang Lu can’t immediately determine if it’s real or fake. This will require the help of the babies…”
The tool cats were touched again. At eight or nine in the evening, Coal Ball led the way and brought back more cats, and at the same time, a bunch of rats.
One cat was responsible for watching one rat. Coal Ball sat in front of the cats and rats, majestic and very handsome.
Xia Weishuang cut up the old protective suits that she and Bai Qian had changed out of, which were stained with blood and sweat, and then tied them to the rats. Later, the cats would drive the rats to various places and urge their footprints to cover A City.
Then there was the second batch of rats, the third batch… After the protective suits were used up, Xia Weishuang, Bai Qian, and the cats all fell into a deep sleep.
The next day, Bai Qian no longer had a fever, and the swelling on her shoulder had subsided a little.
On the third day, Bai Qian had recovered her spirits. Coal Ball had brought back more food, and everything was back on track.
So while Bai Qian was sleeping, Xia Weishuang put on her protective suit, gently took the car keys and backpack, and opened the door, preparing to leave alone.
“Meow,” Coal Ball meowed softly in the darkness.
Xia Weishuang crouched down and patted its head, saying in a low voice, “Be good. I’ll leave Sister Qian to you.”
She stood up and was about to continue walking when Coal Ball suddenly bit her pant leg and dragged her back. The bedroom door behind her was opened. Bai Qian had woken up at some point and was standing at the door, saying seriously, “Where are you going?!”
