Chapter 12: Playing Games
Due to her schedule, Jiang Mi didn’t see Yan Wei again for the entire afternoon after that moment in the break room.
This gave Jiang Mi some time to buffer. It didn’t matter how much she hyped herself up in private, but being overheard by the person herself was another matter entirely. Zhao Jia told her not to overthink it.
That was true. It was perfectly normal for a fan to confess to their idol.
Yan Wei must have seen it plenty of times, and besides, she didn’t react at all at the time.
The more she thought about it, the more at ease she felt, and she went back to filming.
Seven in the evening.
She got off work half an hour earlier than expected—her scenes with Shen Ruoxi had been unexpectedly smooth, almost all passing in one take.
Shen Ruoxi had originally suggested they have dinner together, but Zhao Jia knew she had other things on her mind, so she stepped in as the “bad guy” and declined on her behalf.
Bringing Yan Wei a glass of personally squeezed juice was something she had planned during the day.
After returning to the hotel, Jiang Mi started fiddling with the juicer. By the time she was done, it was already past eight.
The sink was piled with fruit peels and cores, and seven or eight glasses of colorful juice were lined up on the table.
Jiang Mi selected the pear juice she was most satisfied with, put it in a bag, picked up another paper bag she had been preparing for several days, and finally put the script from the sofa into it as well. Only then did she walk to the full-length mirror by the door and check her appearance carefully, confirming that she was dressed appropriately and looked energetic.
So what if she had socially died in front of Yan Wei during the day?
What was the big deal?
The corridor was filled with the scent of lily of the valley. The nineteenth and twentieth floors, which the crew had rented, had special security measures. Apart from their own people, almost no one would come up to these two floors.
Jiang Mi still wore a bucket hat, swiped her card to go up to the twentieth floor, and took the script out of the bag, holding it in the most conspicuous place.
She looked around, and then, seeing her reflection in the elevator door mirror, realized she looked too much like a thief and straightened her back.
2019.
She stopped outside the door of the room in the farthest corner.
She carefully and nervously rang the doorbell once, waited three seconds, and then repeated it.
This was the last time.
Just like the last time, Jiang Mi waited quietly outside the door. The seconds ticked by with her breath, and the expression of mustered courage gradually faded.
Jiang Mi turned around.
After a few steps, she heard the door behind her suddenly open.
Jiang Mi paused, abruptly turned her head, and her pupils constricted slightly.
Yan Wei was standing behind the door, wearing a white bathrobe. Her hair was wet, and the collar of the robe revealed the tip of her collarbone, making it impossible to look directly at her. Her cool gaze held a hint of scrutiny as she looked at her.
She just stared at her.
Jiang Mi felt that it wasn’t quite appropriate for her to be seeing this.
“Teacher Yan.”
Yan Wei: “Is something the matter?”
Jiang Mi stepped forward. “Are you okay?”
A faint trace of confusion flashed in Yan Wei’s eyes.
Jiang Mi said, “I heard from someone on the crew that you injured your hand.”
In this industry, there were plenty of instances where rumors were blown out of proportion, where black was said to be white… Yan Wei probably guessed what had happened, but she didn’t explain.
She calmly sized up Jiang Mi. Unfortunately, she couldn’t see any trace of politeness on the person’s face. It was as if Jiang Mi was just sincerely expressing her inner thoughts, without any pretense.
Sometimes, Jiang Mi’s actions seemed to have no thought behind them at all.
This was both normal and strange.
A very strange emotion arose in her.
“I’m fine.”
Seeing that Yan Wei clearly didn’t want to say more, Jiang Mi didn’t press further and nodded. “That’s good.” She lowered the script and quickly handed over the bag. “I brought you something, and a small gift.”
Yan Wei looked at the bag in her hand. For some reason, a certain sentence came to mind, and her expression cooled slightly.
Jiang Mi’s hand was extended for three seconds.
She took it from Jiang Mi’s hand.
“Is there anything else?”
A hint of disappointment seemed to appear on the Alpha’s face.
Yan Wei’s brow furrowed imperceptibly for a moment. In fact, she had been in a bad mood before Jiang Mi arrived, so now, she intended to end this meeting immediately. At least for now, she didn’t want to spend too much time on Jiang Mi.
The physical and mental stimulation Jiang Mi brought her was one thing, but she didn’t want to get too close to Jiang Mi.
“There is one more thing.”
Just as she was about to speak, the sound of the elevator opening echoed from the end of the corridor. Jiang Mi definitely didn’t want to be seen here at Yan Wei’s place. She herself didn’t mind, but the key was not to hold Yan Wei back, especially since it involved Yan Wei’s family.
Jiang Mi hesitated. “Teacher Yan, can I say it just inside the door?”
Hearing this, Yan Wei took a light, slow breath, as if all the patience of her life was concentrated in that breath, and then it quietly subsided. Finally, with a look so complex that no one could decipher it, she slowly let her gaze fall on Jiang Mi’s face.
A figure flickered in the distance down the corridor.
The Alpha looked at her with sincerity and purity.
Time flowed like water, second by second. For a moment, Yan Wei suspected that Jiang Mi was playing with her, testing her, approaching her, luring her, challenging her. But then she felt that Jiang Mi didn’t have such good acting skills.
At least not now.
A few seconds later.
Yan Wei turned sideways, creating a space to enter.
The shadow cast on the floor made the space look so narrow, like a gloomy, suffocating passage. Yet, Jiang Mi walked right in.
**
Yan Wei’s room was a suite, more spacious and luxurious than the others.
The balcony window was open, causing the sheer curtains to billow. Jiang Mi immediately smelled a faint fragrance. Apart from Yan Wei’s own scent, there was something else very familiar, so familiar that for a moment she forgot what it was called.
Jiang Mi stood at the door, watching Yan Wei walk further in, and said, “It’s just that I have a day off next week, and I was wondering if I could go see Auntie Mo.”
Because she wasn’t sure if Mo Yun would be at her own villa or at Yan Wei’s apartment, she felt it was better to tell Yan Wei, to avoid a repeat of the previous situation.
Yan Wei walked to the sofa, placed the two paper bags on the coffee table, and then glanced toward the door, saying to the reserved person, “Have a seat.”
Jiang Mi was a little flattered. Following Yan Wei’s words, she took a pair of disposable slippers from the cabinet, changed into them, and then sat on the single chair opposite Yan Wei.
Actually, Jiang Mi had already said what she needed to say. It was just that Yan Wei hadn’t answered, so now she didn’t know what to say. Like an impromptu performance, her brain was working furiously.
Then she said, “Thank you.”
Yan Wei: “For what?”
Jiang Mi: “Thank you for letting me sit down.”
Yan Wei: “…”
Jiang Mi bit her lip.
“Thank you for guiding me on set. Auntie Mo is also very concerned about me, and there’s not much I can do to repay you both. I felt I should go see her when I have a day off, and I wanted to ask for your permission.”
This time, she said it more formally.
Yan Wei still didn’t give an immediate reply. Jiang Mi thought it was probably a lost cause.
But suddenly, she heard Yan Wei ask, “Would you like some water?”
Jiang Mi blinked, once again unable to hide her surprise. “Yes.”
Immediately, she realized that the other person was probably just being polite. Why did she have to actually accept?
Yan Wei stood up and walked to the tea station, picking up a glass. Jiang Mi remembered that her hand was injured and quickly walked over.
“I’ll get it myself.”
She picked up the kettle and poured water.
They were very close, but Jiang Mi was completely unaware. Her attention was on the cup, and she didn’t notice Yan Wei’s hand.
Yan Wei’s gaze shifted from Jiang Mi’s fingertips to her profile, ignoring the faint milky scent. She asked out of the blue, “Are you like this with everyone?”
Jiang Mi was taken aback and put down the kettle. “No.”
She wasn’t actually sure what Yan Wei was referring to and had answered unconsciously.
Only then did she notice the distance between them. The light fragrance once again drew her attention. She finally remembered: it was the scent of roses. Maybe it was shower gel, maybe it was essential oil. In any case, combined with the Omega’s pheromones, it smelled so good that one didn’t dare to savor it too deeply.
Thinking of “Qin Shui” was just a matter of an instant.
Thinking of “Qin Shui’s” emotional expression under her palm that day was also just a matter of an instant.
She didn’t seem to have smelled it before… Was Yan Wei using the same scent as Qin Shui to get into character?
Jiang Mi’s throat moved, and her scalp tingled. She took a step back.
She didn’t know that her actions were completely exposed to Yan Wei’s eyes.
Yan Wei stared at Jiang Mi. After a long moment, she turned back to the sofa, slowly crossed her legs, and said, still coldly, “I don’t get involved in her affairs.”
Jiang Mi remembered the first time she met Yan Wei. The relationship between Yan Wei and Mo Yun had been a bit strange, as if there was something between them, not very close.
But Yan Wei’s words were enough. The purpose of her visit today had been resolved…
Jiang Mi looked at the water she had just poured.
She couldn’t waste it.
She took a few small sips, stood by the sofa, and continued to find another topic. She said, pointing to the paper bag she had brought, “That’s pear juice, it’s warm.”
Yan Wei glanced at the coffee table. “You seem to be quite busy every day.”
Jiang Mi: “It’s alright, just filming… Oh, you mean this pear juice? Actually, Zhao Jia usually helps me make the juice and soy milk in the morning, so it’s fine. I made this one myself.”
Of the several fruits she had tried, this one had the best texture and was most suitable for drinking at this time. There wasn’t much, and the sweetness wouldn’t be a burden for Yan Wei.
Hearing this, Yan Wei looked at the other bag and, for the first time, asked, “What’s that?”
Jiang Mi quickly explained, “This is a gift for you. I wanted to give it to you on the first day of filming, but I never found the chance.”
She added, “I hope you like it.”
Yan Wei didn’t respond, her attitude unreadable. Finally, her gaze fell on the script beside her. Jiang Mi said honestly, with a hint of pride, “I was afraid people would see and misunderstand or take pictures, so I brought a script to be safe.”
After she finished speaking, she looked at Yan Wei. The next second, their eyes met.
The wind outside the window was slightly intoxicating, gentle yet messy. The white curtains billowed, and the wind took on shape and sound.
It felt like something was about to happen.
Jiang Mi looked at those exquisite phoenix eyes. They didn’t seem so cold. It was just that recently, Yan Wei’s gaze always gave her a heavy feeling, like something was being rubbed hard against her skin, making it tingle and itch.
Just like recently, before she had time to identify the emotion, it was quickly replaced by the usual detachment.
Jiang Mi paused for two seconds, sensing a hint of irritation in the final look. She finished her water in one gulp and immediately stood up. “It’s getting late. I won’t disturb you any longer.”
Yan Wei didn’t say anything. She left quickly, so she wasn’t sure if Yan Wei had looked at her.
The door closed.
Jiang Mi walked down the corridor, staring at the deep blue carpet, her steps slow. Today was probably the most Yan Wei had ever spoken to her outside of filming.
But it was clear that Yan Wei still resisted her.
Inside the room, Yan Wei sat on the sofa for a long time. She withdrew her gaze from the coffee table, took a slim cigarette and a lighter from her bag, and slowly walked to the balcony. She closed the sliding door behind her and faced the glass.
Her long fingers held the cigarette to her lips, and she took a drag.
The light smoke quickly dissipated into the air, diluting the milky pheromone scent a little. Her expression became inscrutable.
Returning to the living room, her gaze fell on the transparent, water-stained glass on the coffee table.
Her focus was on the rim of the cup.
Her fingertips slowly landed on it, then felt the water on it. With a little more force, the cup tipped over, soaking her entire finger.
