Chapter 13: Radiant
The weather forecast had announced rain yesterday, and sure enough, this morning dawned with a fine, misty drizzle.
Last night, after delivering the items to Yan Wei’s room, she had only just returned when she remembered she had forgotten her script there. It was killing her. She tossed and turned until the latter half of the night, unable to sleep. Now, standing by the sink peeling an orange, she couldn’t stop yawning.
Zhao Jia came upstairs to help her pack and said, “Losing a script is indeed not good.”
Jiang Mi: “It’s not just that problem.”
Zhao Jia: “Then what is it? What? Is there something in the script that can’t be seen?”
Jiang Mi: “…”
Actually, there is.
Not wanting to dwell on the topic, Jiang Mi was still yawning. Zhao Jia said, “Anyway, since you have to bring some for Shen Ruoxi, I can just make it all at once and bring it over.”
“It’s more sincere to do it yourself when giving it to someone,” Jiang Mi said.
How to put it? It might be her imagination, but she felt that Yan Wei seemed to have a better impression of things she made herself.
Zhao Jia: “You’re giving some to Shen Ruoxi too. Why don’t you make them together?”
Jiang Mi didn’t look up. “It’s different.”
Zhao Jia insisted, “How is it different? You’re all colleagues.”
Jiang Mi looked over. Zhao Jia let out a “tch.” “I know, Yan Wei is your dear idol. She must be respected, must be treated with sincerity. So in the future, will you have to bathe and purify yourself before seeing her?”
Jiang Mi: “…”
Zhao Jia burst out laughing. Only when it came to Yan Wei could she possibly gain the upper hand. After laughing for a while, she became a little more serious. “But you should treat her with reverence. There’s a red carpet event at the end of this month that you have to attend. Yan Wei will be there too. We have to bask in her glow.”
Jiang Mi looked down, pressing the juicer, waiting for the fresh juice to flow into the transparent container. “Did you manage to arrange it?”
“I pulled a lot of strings. It was incredibly difficult to get it. I practically groveled. Then, tomorrow at noon, we’ll take some time to get your gown fitted first. For this red carpet, both Movie Queen Yan and Shen Ruoxi will be there. Plus, Spring is currently a hot topic. We must seize this opportunity and get as much exposure as possible.”
Jiang Mi nodded. “I know.”
Zhao Jia could see that she was still a bit reluctant. “I’m not asking you to stir up a CP with the Movie Queen and Shen Ruoxi. We don’t have the status or the face for that. We’re just trying to get some exposure.”
Jiang Mi nodded and said, “I’m not reluctant. I’m just afraid the two of them will be.”
“It’s fine. Everyone goes through this. Those who know, know. We’ll try to stay separate. It’s fine even if we don’t get in their shots.”
Jiang Mi didn’t say anything more.
She took a sealed cup of honey pomelo water from the fridge, took a sip herself, and then took another cup and handed it to Zhao Jia.
Zhao Jia was very moved. “Wow, our baby Mimi really knows how to care for people.”
“These are the leftovers from yesterday’s experiment. There are three cups left. We’ll each have one and a half to finish them off,” Jiang Mi said with a grin.
“…”
“So I get the leftovers?”
“Aren’t I drinking them too? It’s a waste to throw them away.”
Zhao Jia rolled her eyes and tasted it. “Too much honey. You should drink less of it too.”
Jiang Mi: “Oh.”
“Waking up so early just to personally make juice for your idol. When will I, Zhao, ever get such treatment?” Zhao Jia watched as Jiang Mi carefully wiped the water droplets from around the plastic cup, feeling a pang of envy.
Jiang Mi sighed. “I’ve already sold myself to you. Can you please not be so petty about these things? Please, please?”
Zhao Jia scoffed, couldn’t help but poke Jiang Mi’s shoulder, and laughed. “Screw you.”
It was just dawning outside. Due to the drop in temperature, Zhao Jia had Jiang Mi put on a new, thick coat. The two of them were talking and laughing in low voices as they waited in front of the elevator.
The moment the doors opened, the people inside and outside were all slightly surprised.
Except for Yan Wei, the other three greeted each other almost simultaneously.
Bai Qiu followed Yan Wei and made some space. Jiang Mi first glanced at Yan Wei, then her gaze swept over her. Yan Wei was dressed a bit thinly. At the same time, she thought, if Yan Wei didn’t offer it, she would have to find an opportunity to ask for her script back.
For now, she could only pray that Yan Wei hadn’t opened her script.
When they reached the hotel’s underground parking, Jiang Mi’s nanny van had already pulled up to the entrance. After saying goodbye to Yan Wei and Bai Qiu, they were about to get in the car.
As they were about to get in, both Zhao Jia and Jiang Mi heard Bai Qiu’s voice from behind them.
“Ah? Is everyone okay? Can you still make it over?”
After she hung up, Zhao Jia asked, “What’s wrong? Is everything alright?”
Bai Qiu said, “Our car was cut off on the road. The police have been called. It’ll probably be a while before it can get here.”
“Then get in our car first,” Jiang Mi said decisively. “We’re all going to the same place anyway.”
**
The nanny van sponsored by Zhou Shanshan was a BMW X3, a five-seater, just enough to fit everyone.
Zhao Jia sat in the front, while Jiang Mi, Bai Qiu, and Yan Wei sat in the second row. Zhao Jia occasionally brought up some topics, and Jiang Mi and Bai Qiu would respond a few times. Yan Wei was mostly silent.
Jiang Mi turned her head to look. She noticed that Yan Wei spent most of her time looking out the window. When they entered a tunnel, she saw Yan Wei’s reflection in the glass, so cold she didn’t seem like a living person.
Her eyes were empty, as if she had no interest in anything.
Jiang Mi didn’t know that the moment she looked away, the phoenix eyes reflected in the car window moved slightly, sharp and oppressive. The roles of observer and observed had reversed in an instant.
“By the way, Teacher Yan, this is for you.” Jiang Mi looked up, finally remembering. She looked past Bai Qiu to Yan Wei. “You probably haven’t had breakfast yet.”
Yan Wei had already reminded her last time not to accept anything more from Jiang Mi, so Bai Qiu didn’t dare to rashly accept it this time. She was just about to politely refuse on Yan Wei’s behalf when she heard Jiang Mi say, “I made the apple juice myself, it’s still warm. And there’s a salad with eggs, lettuce, and chicken breast that Zhao Jia made.”
Bai Qiu didn’t know if Yan Wei wanted to eat it, but she knew she really wanted to try it, because this actress’s manager was really good at cooking.
A pity, she wouldn’t have the chance.
Bai Qiu opened her mouth to decline, “Jiang…”
Before she could finish, a calm voice suddenly sounded beside her ear, “The juice, thank you.”
Jiang Mi’s eyes lit up. She took the juice out of the bag and passed it over Bai Qiu.
Bai Qiu shrank back. Surprised, she turned her head to see Jiang Mi looking at her with curious eyes, asking, “Qiuiu, what were you about to say?”
Bai Qiu: “…I, I was going to say that Teacher Jiang and Sister Jia are so amazing. Unlike me, I can’t do anything.”
Teacher, didn’t you say you wouldn’t accept it?
Jiang Mi smiled and gave her the salad. “You haven’t had breakfast either, right? Do you want to try this? Zhao Jia’s skills are even better.”
Bai Qiu was of course happy to accept. She said her thanks and cheerfully took it.
As they were approaching the set, Jiang Mi finally heard the sound of Yan Wei opening the cup lid.
She turned her head, but because Bai Qiu was in the middle, she couldn’t see Yan Wei, so she didn’t know what expression she had.
The car was quiet for a moment.
Jiang Mi asked, “Teacher Yan, is it good?”
The cup of clear, rich apple juice was held loosely in Yan Wei’s hand. The warmth spread to her palm, and the sweet and sour taste of the juice seemed to still be lingering on her tongue, the aftertaste long.
Yan Wei said slowly, “Not bad.”
“…” Bai Qiu shrank back. For a moment, she suddenly felt that she was a bit… superfluous.
**
Ten minutes later, the car passed through the studio gates and stopped not far from the set. Only then did fine raindrops start to hit the car window. The rain had held off until they reached their destination.
Yan Wei had already opened the car door, and a cold wind rushed in. Jiang Mi opened the door on the other side at the same time.
Spring showers were often sudden.
Most of the people around didn’t have umbrellas and were running toward the studio canopy. Someone was already preparing to bring an umbrella over to Yan Wei, but she still strode forward.
After a few steps, a shadow suddenly fell over her head, like a dark cloud chasing after her. But it was just Bai Qiu holding an umbrella. “Mimi gave us the umbrella, and her coat. She said it’s new, never been worn.”
It was a white, short-fleece coat. Just as Bai Qiu finished speaking, Jiang Mi and Zhao Jia ran past them.
Yan Wei looked up. In her line of sight, Jiang Mi’s hand was shielding her head, the shadow of her palm covering her sparkling eyes. She smiled and shouted, “See you in a bit.”
At this moment, all Yan Wei saw was red lips, white teeth, and a passionate radiance.
And the latter was something she would never possess in her entire life, even until death. She found it extremely glaring. She wanted to grab onto something, and her fingers contracted slightly, only to feel a warm, apple-scented heat coming from her palm…
The sticky apple juice overflowed from the straw and dripped onto the back of her snow-white hand, yet she felt that the juice seemed to have the taste of milk.
She stared at the juice. The image of Jiang Mi’s fair, nimble hands squeezing an apple flashed through her mind, and her tongue instantly felt a little dry.
Her illness seemed to be getting worse.
