Chapter 81: Requesting a Kiss p1
The rain fell in tight weaves, shrouding Huai City in a hazy mist.
Jiang Mi returned to this city. It hadn’t been long since the filming of Spring had ended, so every brick and tile here seemed to be still soaked in certain memories.
Every familiar street could easily connect to a fragment related to Yan Wei.
The car stopped in front of the familiar yet strange villa. She had been here a handful of times, but each time, she had been filled with joy and respect.
Only this time, her footsteps were exceptionally heavy.
She raised her hand and rang the doorbell.
After a moment, the door was slowly pulled open. Mo Yun stood inside. Time had carved deeper furrows on her face, and her once-sharp eyes also looked cloudy and dim.
Jiang Mi was slightly taken aback. A thought flashed through her mind—it turned out that the person who had hurt others might not necessarily gain true peace.
She curved her lips into a habitual, polite, faint smile and called out softly, “Auntie Mo.”
In the living room.
Jiang Mi sat opposite Mo Yun, and the steam from the tea rose between them.
“Auntie Mo, how have you been lately?” Jiang Mi asked softly, her fingertips unconsciously rubbing the rim of the cup.
Mo Yun didn’t answer immediately, but quietly looked at her. After a long time, she finally spoke, “Aren’t you on Yan Wei’s side?” Her tone was calm, but it carried a hint of an imperceptible probing.
Jiang Mi met her gaze, her voice gentle but firm. “Auntie Mo, I don’t know the past between you two. In this situation, which side can I be on?” She leaned forward slightly, her eyes sincere. “Don’t you think so?”
Mo Yun let out a soft sigh, and a bitter curve appeared at the corner of her lips. “I know, in your heart, you’re still more inclined towards Yan Wei. You came today to persuade me of something?”
“Not to persuade you.” Jiang Mi shook her head, her tone earnest. “I just remembered that when I was in Huai City before, you always took good care of me. We haven’t seen each other since that incident. I happen to have some free time today, so I wanted to come and see you.”
She paused, her voice softening a little. “Auntie Mo, I didn’t expect that incident to make you sad.”
After Mo Yun and Yan Wei had argued in that house last time, she had said some not-so-polite words to Mo Yun, and she hadn’t contacted Mo Yun since.
Sometimes, she didn’t know if she was right. It was just that in her understanding, she didn’t think Yan Wei was wrong.
Mo Yun’s expression softened slightly, and she picked up her teacup and took a sip.
Seeing this, Jiang Mi continued, “I heard from my mom that you and she used to have a very good relationship.”
“Yes,” Mo Yun said, her gaze suddenly becoming a little distant. “Back then, our two families were neighbors. Your mother was always very enthusiastic…”
She suddenly stopped, as if she had thought of something, and didn’t continue.
Jiang Mi gently picked up, “I’m talking about my biological mother, Dong Yanqi.”
This sentence made the air instantly freeze.
Mo Yun’s fingers, holding the teacup, tightened slightly, and a complex emotion flashed in her eyes.
When the name “Dong Yanqi” was spoken from Jiang Mi’s mouth, she was like she had been lightly struck by a distant electric current, and her eyelashes trembled uncontrollably a few times.
Jiang Mi didn’t rush her.
After a long while.
“Yanqi…” she repeated in a low voice, her gaze as if it had passed through the past. “It’s been a long, long time since I’ve heard anyone mention this name.”
She paused, with a voice that had been eroded by the years, “At that time, me, Xiaotan, and Yanqi, the three of us… were the best.”
Mo Yun’s gaze slowly focused on Jiang Mi’s face. She carefully studied Jiang Mi’s features—those clear eyes with a hint of stubbornness, the straight and delicate nose, and the lips that showed a hint of a self-willed stubbornness when pursed.
For some reason, Mo Yun’s eyes gradually turned red.
“The first time I saw you,” her voice was very light, “I was really surprised. You and she look so much alike… especially the outline of these eyes and nose, it’s like they were carved from the same mold. Looking at you, it’s as if… as if I’m seeing her when she was young.”
Jiang Mi was slightly taken aback. Regarding Dong Yanqi, Jiang Youshu had not mentioned much to her, and she had never heard anyone say so clearly that she resembled her.
She curved her lips into a just-right smile. “Is that so? My mom did mention that you had a very good relationship, but she didn’t say much about the details. Can you… tell me more about her?”
However, in the deepest part of her heart, Jiang Mi had long since lost the desire to explore this woman who had given her life but had also made her fear survival.
She had no hatred for Dong Yanqi, nor any love.
If Dong Yanqi were standing in front of her now, she wouldn’t even know what to ask, what to say… not to mention, Dong Yanqi was already dead.
So those past events, whether happy or sad, seemed to be very far away from her.
But she knew clearly that the name Dong Yanqi was now a way to quickly close the distance with Mo Yun.
Mo Yun’s gaze lingered on Jiang Mi’s face for a long time, and a layer of moisture gradually appeared in her eyes. Jiang Mi silently took a tissue from the coffee table and handed it to her.
Mo Yun took it, her fingertips trembling slightly. It took a long time before she spoke in a low voice, “The three of us… were from the same university. When your mother was young, her personality was very similar to yours now, like a little sun.”
She paused, her voice carrying a distant nostalgia. “When Xiaotan and I were in school, we received a lot of encouragement and help from her… but she had a flaw, which was that she was too easy to trust others.”
Mo Yun took a deep breath, and the pain in her heart came out bit by bit with her memories. “Later, when Xiaotan and I got together, we had less contact with her. During that time, she fell in love with a… very bad person. For that person, she dropped out of school, and in the end, she simply left the school with him. By the time we contacted her again, we found out that she had already gotten a marriage certificate with that person.”
That woman she had never met, at this moment, only appeared as a vague image of a “very bad person,” but strangely, it made Jiang Mi’s heart tighten a little.
She could probably guess the later story, but she still asked softly, “And later?”
“How could such a marriage be happy?” Mo Yun’s voice sank. “That person was very bad to her. After you were born, Yanqi was still in her confinement period, and he cheated on her. For the woman outside, he argued with Yanqi every day.”
She closed her eyes, as if she were unwilling to recall those scenes. “Once, when we went to see her, the whole house was a mess. Yanqi was sitting on the floor crying, and you were crying in the cradle… she was covered in injuries, and her face was even more unbearable. She held Xiaotan’s hand and said she wanted a divorce. This farce lasted for half a year before it ended. After that, Yanqi was like a different person.”
Jiang Mi unconsciously clenched her fingers, and her knuckles turned white from the force.
So in the end, everyone was very pitiful, but she was the one who deserved to die? Did she have to bear all her pain, her unwillingness, her complete disappointment in this world, and also her complete anger?
Mo Yun saw that Jiang Mi seemed to have thought of something, and she immediately softened her tone. “Auntie knows that you had a hard time for a while… but you also have to understand your mother. She was very pitiful, and she was also innocent. After all, it was she who went through so much hardship to give birth to you… and later, she even chose to leave this world in such a tragic way…”
Jiang Mi didn’t reply, but just moved her gaze elsewhere. She had no intention of changing Mo Yun’s mind. Some deep-rooted things could not be resolved with just a few words.
Jiang Mi picked up her teacup, her fingertips on the cool cup wall. The tea was losing its heat. She looked up at the gloomy-faced Mo Yun opposite her and gently led the topic away. “Auntie Xiaotan… what kind of person was she? Does Yan Wei look like her?”
The moment her words fell, the air instantly froze.
Mo Yun’s face suddenly turned cold, and an undisguised pain and hatred welled up in her eyes.
“She doesn’t look like anyone.”
This sentence was almost squeezed out from between her teeth, with a cold hardness.
She took a deep breath, as if to suppress the churning emotions in her chest. “If it weren’t for her, how could Xiaotan have… you don’t know, Yan Wei has been a rebellious person since she was a child. She’s unruly and has never been a moment of peace. No matter where you put her, she’s annoying. Xiaotan and I have cleaned up so many messes for her.”
Her voice began to tremble. “But even so, Xiaotan was still patient with her, and loved her as her own… but what about her? What did she give in return?”
Mo Yun suddenly looked up, her gaze so chilling. She pierced Jiang Mi and said, word by word, “She killed Xiaotan.”
The ruthlessness and despair in that gaze sent another chill up Jiang Mi’s spine.
Jiang Mi composed herself and continued to ask, “So now… she’s also gotten her retribution. Does she also hate you for this? That’s why she… treats you like that.”
“Does she dare?” Mo Yun sneered, her laugh full of mockery. “In the past, she at least treated Mo Xi as her sister, and she could still pretend in front of me. I didn’t see her often, so I could tolerate it for a while. After all, her conditions are good. Mo Xi’s studies, her life, which one doesn’t need a lot of money? And her future social circle can’t do without her support… but she suddenly wanted to cut off all contact! I could tolerate that, but she even dared to make Mo Xi unable to hold her head up in school, and didn’t even give Mo Xi a place to live!”
“Auntie, if you’re short on money, I’m here…” Jiang Mi showed her concern at the right time.
Mo Yun waved her hand and looked at Jiang Mi with a complex expression. “Auntie knows you’re a good girl. The family actually has money. All the money Yan Wei earned before she became an adult is in my hands. Although most of it was deducted by the company through various means, the amount that came to me was not small. I don’t want to see her for a single day, but whenever I think that she has ruined this family and is probably living a carefree life, I can’t even sleep well.”
“So that’s how it is…” Jiang Mi seemed to be relieved, her tone carrying a hint of a lingering fear and relief. “Last time I accompanied you to the hospital, I saw that you had no injuries, and I’ve been blaming myself, feeling that I didn’t take good care of you and just left.”
These words made Mo Yun’s expression even more relaxed, and even showed a hint of a moved look from being understood. “No, I’m fine. If I didn’t say that to the outside world, would those people go and deal with Yan Wei?”
Jiang Mi showed a just-right amount of surprise. “So what you said on the internet… was all fake? Yan Wei didn’t really abuse you?”
Mo Yun didn’t answer directly. She avoided Jiang Mi’s gaze and repeated in a low voice the reason that seemed to explain everything, as if she were trying to convince herself, “Who let her kill Xiaotan…”
Jiang Mi looked at her and asked softly, her tone calm but with an imperceptible probing, “But Auntie, that incident… the final conclusion from the police, wasn’t it an accident?”
Mo Yun’s voice suddenly rose, and her fingertips tapped heavily on the coffee table, causing the water in the cup to ripple. “They just didn’t investigate it thoroughly! What’s the use of the police?”
Her chest heaved violently, and her emotions suddenly fluctuated. “It was Yan Wei who pushed her! And Yanqi was at the scene at that time. She told me herself, she saw it with her own eyes. It was Yan Wei who did it!”
With a “clang,” the cup in Jiang Mi’s hand almost slipped. She tightened her grip on her fingertips to steady her trembling.
She had never expected that the deepest thorn in Mo Yun’s heart was actually related to Dong Yanqi.
The reason Mo Yun was so firm and put all the blame on Yan Wei was rooted in her unconditional trust in Dong Yanqi.
Between the facts, between her daughter and her old friend, Mo Yun had unhesitatingly chosen to believe Dong Yanqi.
Jiang Mi lowered her eyes and clenched her fists slightly. She needed a great deal of restraint to maintain the almost-frozen calmness on her face.
**
After saying goodbye to Mo Yun, Jiang Mi turned and stepped into the fine rain.
The afternoon sky was gloomy, and the rain slid down the umbrella ribs, splashing into small puddles on the ground.
Just as she reached the villa’s courtyard gate, Mo Yun’s voice came from behind her.
“Mimi.”
She held her umbrella and turned, seeing Mo Yun standing at the door, her white hair a little messy in the wind.
The old woman looked at her, her eyes a little dazed, and said softly, “It’s nothing… it’s just that for a moment, it was as if I saw Yanqi when she was young.”
Jiang Mi stopped and returned a faint smile. “I’m sorry, Auntie Mo.”
“Sorry for what?”
Mo Yun was confused.
Jiang Mi shook her head and didn’t explain.
The rain had wet her shoulders. She was silent for a moment, then suddenly asked, “Auntie Mo, in those days when Yan Wei was in pain, were you happy?”
This question made Mo Yun freeze on the spot, the expression on her face frozen.
Jiang Mi’s lips curved into a bitter smile, and she said softly, “Please take care.”
Back in the car, Zhao Jia immediately handed her a towel to wipe her hair.
As the towel was draped over her shoulders, Zhao Jia noticed the redness in Jiang Mi’s eyes and asked with concern, “What’s wrong?”
Jiang Mi didn’t answer directly, but looked at the rain outside the window and asked softly in return, “Tell me, why do mothers bring us into this world?”
Zhao Jia was at a loss and replied hesitantly, “Maybe… to experience the joy of raising a child? To make the family more lively? Or… for old age?”
I don’t know. I’ve never given birth.
Jiang Mi took out a makeup mirror from her bag and studied herself in the mirror.
Did she really look like Dong Yanqi? This thought came to her so clearly for the first time.
She looked for a long time.
Jiang Mi put down the mirror, picked up her phone, put on her earphones, and her fingertips paused on the screen for a moment. Finally, she opened the conversation she had just recorded.
