Chapter 21 p1
Xu Ling watched absentmindedly. As soon as a message popped up at the top of the screen, she turned her face away again.
Although she saw it was from her manager, she was afraid the next message would be from that person.
Qin Cong’an glanced at her and asked, “How is it?”
“It’s alright,” Xu Ling replied perfunctorily.
Seeing her like this, Qin Cong’an seemed to want to say something but held back. She retracted her hand, put down her phone, and leaned over to touch her stomach, her voice extremely soft. “It hurts a lot, huh? I won’t disturb you then. You should sleep.”
“Mhm.”
“Is my hand cold?”
Xu Ling didn’t answer, just gripped her hand, not wanting her to move it away.
She didn’t know if it was the hormones or if her voice was just too gentle, but just like that, she wanted to cry her eyes out.
They had arrived at the guesthouse at five in the morning. After a shower, she had gone straight to sleep. All in all, she had slept for seven hours, but seven hours of sleeping during the day couldn’t compare to the quality of a normal night’s sleep. On top of that, her period had arrived. After the painkillers took effect, she fell asleep again.
Qin Cong’an felt the steady rise and fall of Xu Ling’s chest and also closed her eyes, trying to sleep some more, but she couldn’t.
Xu Ling’s grip on her hand loosened a little. Qin Cong’an pulled her hand out and tiptoed off the bed.
She left the room and knocked on a crew member’s door. Many of those who hadn’t gone out were staying in their rooms with the air conditioning on.
“What is it, Teacher Qin?”
“I need to go out for a bit. Can I have a car?”
Someone brought over the car keys. “Are you going alone? We can go with you.”
“No need. I’m just going to buy a few things. I’ll be back soon.”
The group exchanged glances. They knew they couldn’t persuade her. “Then be careful on the road. It’s raining, and the roads are slippery. Be sure to contact us if anything happens.”
Qin Cong’an agreed, went downstairs, but didn’t start the car right away. She opened her phone.
Qin Cong’an’s manager hadn’t been with the crew for a while. She had returned to North City for work, recently negotiating an endorsement deal.
Sister Quan: [Talked with CI for ages, and in the end, they said they still want someone who’s won an award. I’m so mad!]
Qin Cong’an replied: [I don’t meet their requirements. It’s normal for them not to choose me.]
Sister Quan: [You’re just one award away now. The subject matter of She and Her and the Knife isn’t right, and your next role isn’t very likable. Another year wasted /frustrated]
Sister Quan: [Okay, let’s not talk about this. Is the filming going smoothly? I heard you’re in the middle of nowhere now?]
Qin Cong’an: [It’s not exactly the middle of nowhere. It’s going smoothly.]
After a few more messages, Qin Cong’an opened the navigation and started the car.
Xu Ling slept very well this time. When she woke up, the rain had stopped, but the sky was frighteningly dark. The person next to her was gone, and the room was small and old. She felt as if she had been abandoned by the whole world.
She quickly got out of bed, changed her sanitary pad, and ran out to find Qin Cong’an.
The crew members who had gone out to play had all returned, but Qin Cong’an wasn’t there.
Someone said she had gone out and hadn’t come back yet.
Hearing this, Liang He quickly asked, “How long has she been gone? Alone?”
“Mhm… alone. She said she was going to buy something.” The person who answered was a little guilty. “It’s been over two hours.”
In such a remote place, where could a person go alone for two hours? And she had driven.
Liang He became anxious, worried that something had happened to her, and quickly called her.
The call was answered immediately. The other end asked, “What’s wrong?”
“You scared me to death. Where are you?”
“Downstairs, in the car. Didn’t you see me?”
Phew—the whole group breathed a sigh of relief.
Who would have thought she had come back but had been sitting in the car the whole time? No one had noticed.
It was almost time to leave. Everyone packed up and went downstairs together.
Xu Ling wanted to rush past them and be the first to see Qin Cong’an, but she felt it would be too strange and held back, following behind the main group.
Chang Ning saw that her face was pale and asked, “Did your period come?”
“Mhm.”
“You should have said so earlier. We’re filming a rainy night scene tonight.” Chang Ning looked troubled.
“I didn’t know it would come today…”
“You didn’t know?” Chang Ning was instinctively puzzled, but then she understood. She sighed. “You need to take care of your body. This won’t do. Aah, really, the rain machine has already been sent to the location.”
“We can film as planned, Director Chang. Aren’t we wearing raincoats?”
“Even with raincoats, you’ll still get wet. You two have a lot of big movements.” Chang Ning rubbed her face, a little annoyed. “Let’s film it the day after tomorrow. You should be better on the third day, right?”
“It’s really fine. We can film today.”
“Are you sure?”
“I’m sure.” Xu Ling didn’t want to delay the shoot. And for her, there was no difference between the first and third day. It was better to just get it over with today. She had slept enough; she should be fine.
Chang Ning looked at her expression and nodded. “Fine. If you can’t take it, just say so. If you collapse, it’ll affect the rest of the shoot.”
“Okay.”
On the first floor, Xu Ling saw Qin Cong’an. She had come out from behind the curtain of the front desk, holding a food container. Inside were two plump, golden-yellow pastries, steaming and emitting a milky fragrance.
Chang Ning glanced at them, surprised. “Where did you get egg yolk pastries?”
“I made them.” Qin Cong’an handed the container to Xu Ling. “I had the owner help me heat them up. Eat them on the way.”
Xu Ling was a little stunned. She loved egg yolk pastries, especially the freshly baked kind. They were the most fragrant. If that wasn’t an option, her favorite brand, heated up, was also good.
She used to have a roommate who was the best at making these kinds of pastries. Back then, she would save her stomach and eat nothing but one of her little pastries.
Chang Ning was still in shock. “Made them? How did you make them?”
Liang He, standing to the side, was about to die of laughter. “Ning’er, you have no sense of humor. In a place like this, where else could they have come from? What kind of question is that?”
“No, she said she made them.”
“Isn’t that obviously a joke?”
“…” Chang Ning didn’t think she lacked a sense of humor. It was just that Qin Cong’an wasn’t suited for joking. It wasn’t funny at all!
Liang He, however, found it hilarious. Another funny point was, “Little Qin, when you said ‘eat them on the way,’ for some reason, it gave me the feeling that you were Little Xu’s mom.”
After hearing this, Xu Ling almost dropped the box. She inexplicably remembered seeing Jiang Ruzhi call her girlfriend “mommy” backstage. She quickly glanced at Qin Cong’an.
Her originally pale face turned bright red.
Liang He looked at Xu Ling. “What’s wrong? Smitten?”
Qin Cong’an shot him a look and went out first.
Liang He followed her and asked, “Did you go out just to buy egg yolk pastries?”
“And some other things.”
“Where did you buy them? Was it far?”
“Over forty minutes by car. It was fine.”
“So far, how is that fine? You should have just told us to pick up some snacks on our way back. Why go to all that trouble? The road conditions here aren’t good, and it was still raining just now. What if you got into an accident?”
“I wouldn’t.”
Xu Ling heard all of this. She tried to focus on listening, not wanting to miss a single word.
In the car on the way to the filming location, Xu Ling ate the heated egg yolk pastry.
The ones you could buy around here weren’t from a good brand. The ingredients weren’t good enough, and the egg yolk inside was a bit dry after being heated, but Xu Ling thought it was delicious.
Yi Huai leaned against the car window, watching Xu Ling carefully eat the egg yolk pastry. “Sleeping together really is different, huh?”
Xu Ling’s hand trembled. She didn’t dare to look at Sister Huai and played dumb. “What?”
“Sleeping in the same bed really does bring people closer. That’s good.” Yi Huai was very pleased. Her little artist now had a senior as a friend.
There was also a driver and a staff member in the car. Yi Huai saying this so openly clearly meant just literally sleeping in the same bed.
Xu Ling silently continued to eat the egg yolk pastry.
“But is it good enough for her to go out of her way to buy you food?” Yi Huai was suspicious for a moment, then understood. “She probably had something else she wanted to buy.”
It was the first day of Xu Ling’s period, but she had slept well, and the painkillers and egg yolk pastry were working wonders. Her condition wasn’t bad.
The rain machine started working, creating a limited downpour in the wilderness. Chang Ning took care of the shot, making sure the rain was even in every part of the frame.
The two of them, wearing transparent plastic raincoats, buried Ku Ai’s body in the heavy rain.
They had argued before, and after the incident with Jian Yu chipping her tooth on the roast duck, the atmosphere between them was a bit stiff, but not terrible. There was a hint of harmony in the awkwardness.
The filming went smoothly. Chang Ning had originally thought it would delay the schedule, but they finished as planned.
“OK! That’s it for today. Xu Ling, are you okay? Go back and take a hot shower right away,” Chang Ning said.
“I’m fine,” Xu Ling’s voice was a little weak, but she hadn’t gotten very wet, so it wasn’t a big deal.
