Chapter 33
Before Xu Ling could feel Qin Cong’an about to speak, she climbed out of bed, her head tilting unnaturally from side to side to stretch her neck and shoulders, and went to the bathroom to wash up.
Qin Cong’an looked at the closed door, raised her arm to look at the bruises on her body, and yawned. So tired. She felt a kind of exhaustion that even a long sleep couldn’t alleviate.
Good thing it was almost over, Qin Cong’an thought, and stretched comfortably again.
The phone vibrated again. Qin Cong’an picked it up, this time answering the call. She got up and went out to drink water. The room was a little dry, and she was very thirsty after sleeping all night.
“It should wrap in about four days, maybe five…”
Mixed with the sound of the running faucet, Xu Ling clearly heard the voice from outside, and then it faded and became inaudible.
Was it a call from someone else? Or was it him? She still answered it, her tone the same as before. So, no fight, no breakup?
Xu Ling was in a complete mess. She lowered her head and rubbed her face hard, deliberately making it hurt.
After washing her face and brushing her teeth, Xu Ling stared blankly in the mirror for a while before going out, only to see Qin Cong’an still on the sofa, on the phone.
How long was this call going to take? Xu Ling’s expression didn’t change. She walked towards the main door. When she reached the door, she felt she couldn’t just leave like this and turned back.
As Xu Ling turned back, she happened to see Qin Cong’an following her.
Qin Cong’an seemed very surprised by her action of walking to the door and then turning back. She raised an eyebrow. “I thought you were leaving.”
Xu Ling ignored her and heard the male voice on the other end of the line ask, “Who is it?”
Now it was confirmed. It was him. Xu Ling walked past Qin Cong’an, shamelessly going into the bedroom and lying on her bed while she was on the phone with her boyfriend.
“Wait for me for a bit,” Qin Cong’an said to her, then sat back down on the sofa outside.
Xu Ling heard her say to the other end, “An actress from the set… a woman…”
Hearing this made Xu Ling want to laugh. So it was okay because she was a woman?
There wasn’t a single part of Qin Cong’an’s body that she hadn’t kissed, especially the few spots that made her feel good. She had licked them most enthusiastically.
Qin Cong’an was quite amusing, with an invincible psychological fortitude. She had actually said it in such a calm tone. Why not just tell him her name?
“Xu Ling.”
“…” Xu Ling sat up abruptly. Had she already hung up and was calling her, or was she still talking to the person on the phone?? But it was clearly not the latter, because Qin Cong’an’s voice was much softer.
But even with a softer voice, a person would still be keenly aware when their own name was mentioned.
The voice from outside continued, “I don’t know, we’ll see. By the way, don’t call me for the next few days. I’m busy. And don’t come to pick me up.”
Xu Ling’s hands started to grow cold. What was this? Was she being checked up on, so she wanted to turn their on-set-wives status into on-set-good-sisters?
Then Qin Cong’an shouldn’t have followed her when she was about to leave. And she shouldn’t have spoken. So careless!
She was dead. What if he got suspicious? Would she be dragged by Qin Cong’an to be a witness?
The thought alone was enough to make her crack.
But Qin Cong’an probably wouldn’t be that ridiculous. If she dared, Xu Ling would dare to bury her face in Qin Cong’an’s chest right in front of him. After all, good sisters kiss and hug too.
Qin Cong’an hung up the phone, poured a glass of water, and walked into the bedroom, placing it on the nightstand on Xu Ling’s side. “Drink water.” Then she went into the bathroom to wash up.
Xu Ling was indeed very thirsty now. She drank more than half of it in one go, then a little flustered, picked up that copy of The Dark Room and started to flip through it.
Qin Cong’an climbed onto the bed and asked, “Are you hungry?”
“No.” Xu Ling was filled with complex emotions and even felt a little bloated. She was a little scared, worried that Qin Cong’an would bring up the matter of introducing her to her boyfriend.
“Oh.” Qin Cong’an leaned over and hugged her, nuzzling her with the scent of her medicated plaster, her fingertips tracing her long neck.
Xu Ling was so tickled she couldn’t stand it, but she remained unmoved, asking with a serious expression, “What is this book about?”
“You don’t know?” Qin Cong’an’s fingers twirled a strand of Xu Ling’s hair. “Were you the type who didn’t study hard in school? You’re so beautiful, did you start dating very early?”
“…” What was she trying to change the subject for! Xu Ling asked, “I only know a little. The textbooks didn’t cover the whole thing, and this book is so thick.”
She was changing the subject, Qin Cong’an thought. So had she dated a lot in school? Especially after going abroad, living with such a great beauty, who was also very good at making her favorite snacks. And she was in the modeling circle, where everyone was beautiful and had a good figure. She didn’t believe she hadn’t met anyone she liked.
“It’s about a woman’s life,” Qin Cong’an said.
“…Isn’t that obvious?”
“But it’s the truth. Do you want me to summarize it in one sentence?” Qin Cong’an said lightly. “Many things happened. Revolution, war, religion, era and class. I can’t summarize it, and there are many parts I didn’t understand.”
Xu Ling flipped through the pages and said nonchalantly, “I remember she had an affair, right?”
“Mhm, the affair was also a part of her life. She loved to read poetry. Her husband only loved money and participating in high-society activities. He didn’t understand her.”
“Oh…”
“A woman’s life, crushed by the ruthless forces of the universe,” Qin Cong’an asked her. “How’s that for a summary?”
“Not very good.”
Qin Cong’an laughed, her nose nuzzling the top of her head. “You should read it too. It’s very interesting. It’s not just about the female protagonist. Every character in it is very moving, very three-dimensional. Their psychological activities are complex and real. It will also be helpful for you as an actress in the future.”
“I don’t want to read it. There are too many words.” Xu Ling placed the book on her. She thought, Qin Cong’an is indeed a very good actress. I can’t see her inner conflict at all. Shouldn’t she be in as much pain as the female protagonist of The Dark Room?
Qin Cong’an held the book and asked her, “Do you like to watch plays?”
“I haven’t seen any.” Xu Ling only knew that she loved to watch plays.
“Teacher Dong told me that a producer friend of his bought the Chinese stage play adaptation rights for The Dark Room. But they haven’t started casting yet. I don’t know when it will officially be on stage.”
Xu Ling understood. “You want to be in it?”
Qin Cong’an nodded. “I don’t know if I’ll be chosen. I’ve never been in a play before.”
“Who do you want to play?”
Qin Cong’an opened the book and pointed to a character’s name. “Hicks Campbell.”
Xu Ling was very surprised. She had thought it would be the female protagonist.
“Why don’t you play the female protagonist?”
It suits you very well. You would definitely be able to grasp the female protagonist’s psychological activities.
“I’m a newcomer to the stage. I definitely won’t be able to get it. And I like this character. She’s the wife of the female protagonist’s husband’s colleague, a country woman, not well-educated, a bit rude, and a bit selfish, but her words and actions are very interesting. She’s a type I’ve never played before.”
All the sarcasm in Xu Ling’s heart vanished. As she listened to her speak slowly, it was as if she had fallen into a soft yet resilient marshmallow.
In her ten-year career, Qin Cong’an had had phenomenal box-office hits and held numerous luxury endorsements, yet she had never given the impression of being up in the clouds.
She would disappear from the public eye for half a year to participate in martial arts training camps, just to make her action scenes look better. She would also try different types of roles, even if they were just supporting roles, always maintaining a down-to-earth attitude.
And this wasn’t a persona; this was just who she was. The reason Xu Ling had been attracted to her in the first place was because of her unique temperament—calm and dignified, as if she had experienced many things. Her every frown, smile, and movement was not as simple as it appeared on the surface. This was especially prominent on the big screen, which was why filmmakers loved her.
Xu Ling was momentarily at a loss for words.
Qin Cong’an gently stroked her head. Seeing her staring at her without speaking, she asked, “What’s wrong?”
“You’re… amazing,” Xu Ling said, then averted her gaze. What to do? She was just hopelessly in love with her.
Qin Cong’an chuckled. “I thought you were going to say something else.”
A brief silence.
Qin Cong’an said, “So, if I get chosen, will you come to see it?”
Xu Ling was stunned. What was her mood when she asked this question?
“Of course.” She didn’t even know what her own mood was when she answered with those two words. She just smiled. “And you’ll definitely be chosen.”
“I’ll take that as a good omen.” Qin Cong’an leaned over and pressed down on Xu Ling.
Xu Ling’s heart was pounding, but she saw that Qin Cong’an had just reached for the half-empty glass of water on the nightstand and drank it.
Qin Cong’an said, “You still haven’t answered my question.”
“Question?” She had already answered. She would go see it. But Xu Ling actually didn’t know if she would go or not.
“Did you date a lot in your student days?”
“…” It was actually this question. Xu Ling had almost forgotten about it. She didn’t know how to answer, so she asked back, “What about you?”
Qin Cong’an looked at her quietly for a long time before saying, “Xu Ling, you’re no fun.” She turned to her side and placed the water glass on the nightstand on her side.
You’re the most fun. Xu Ling glared at the back of her head, inexplicably angry. But when she saw her neck, her heart started to itch again. Her hand reached out and scratched it like a kitten. Qin Cong’an’s neck flinched, her shoulders and neck forming a beautiful curve.
Xu Ling looked at the injuries on her body, feeling both heartache and finding them very sexy. She was really hopeless. On one hand, she thought, how could she be like this? On the other hand, she couldn’t help but be attracted to her.
Qin Cong’an turned over and straddled Xu Ling, her thumb and forefinger pinching her chin and shaking it. “I didn’t want to talk to you just now.”
“Angry?” Xu Ling smiled. What did she have to be angry about? “Okay, then I’ll answer your question. I dated a lot, starting from university, and never stopped.”
Wait. After saying that, Xu Ling felt she had said it too late. Why hadn’t she said high school, or middle school would have been good too? Starting from university and never stopping didn’t sound that impressive.
“Oh, is that so.” She knew it.
“Yeah.” Xu Ling held her face and gave her a sweet smile. “So it must be really good to sleep with me, right? Isn’t it really good, Qin Cong’an?”
Her smile was so annoying. Qin Cong’an swatted her hands away, pressed her face to the side so she couldn’t smile, and pulled open Xu Ling’s collar. Now they were both covered in injuries. A few more wouldn’t arouse suspicion.
She was in so much pain from her actions, so much pain that physiological tears kept seeping out. Qin Cong’an was a strange person. Sometimes she was afraid of hurting her, and sometimes she wanted her to hurt.
