Chapter 12:
“Where are you going?”
The voice came from behind her. The creature trying to escape trembled, and the tentacles clinging to the window sill loosened, nearly causing her to fall out.
Fortunately, other tentacles caught her, and she barely managed to steady herself.
Seeing this, the person behind her immediately took several quick, urgent steps toward her.
Li An was caught in a dilemma, unable to steel herself to go down, nor could she turn back.
The footsteps grew closer. With no more time to think, she hardened her heart, and her remaining tentacles let go, preparing to jump.
But Ji Yulin was faster. Pushing off with her right leg, she half-ran, half-fell, lunging toward the window. In that instant, a pale, slender hand grabbed an octopus tentacle and, with a hard pull, dragged Li An from the dark night into the brightly lit room.
“Ugh,” the person whose waist had slammed into the window sill let out a muffled groan. But with no time to recover, she pulled the little octopus back a step, reached for the window, and slammed it shut with great force. The impact made a loud noise, and the entire wall trembled.
The little octopus, held in her hand, shivered along with it, looking up guiltily and nervously.
Ji Yulin’s face was dark. The gentleness she usually showed the little octopus was gone, as if she were suppressing a raging fire. The veins on the back of her hand bulged, but her knuckles, gripping the octopus, tightened and then loosened.
“Where were you going?” she asked, her voice even more suppressed, each word a question.
Li An didn’t know how to react. Her tentacles instinctively climbed and wrapped around her knuckles, as if trying to appease her, or perhaps to struggle.
“Were you trying to run away?” Ji Yulin’s voice was still laced with the rapid breathing from her rush, but her words didn’t pause.
“You want to leave me?”
She still carried the faint scent of shower gel. Water dripped from her disheveled hair, and her fingertips were flushed red. When she grabbed Li An, her hand was warm, but her expression grew more and more sinister. Even as she tried to suppress her anger, the oppressive aura around her was hard to hide.
“Why?” The words were squeezed through her thin lips. Her jaw was tight and sharp, and a vein bulged on her neck.
An inexplicable fear rose in Li An. She couldn’t help but shrink, trying to curl into the palm of her hand. Even though this would make it impossible for her to escape, the instinct etched into an octopus’s genetic code made her want to hide in a narrow space, a prey willingly falling into a trap.
She didn’t understand why Ji Yulin was so angry. If they weren’t even master and pet, just a useful experimental subject, why was she making such an expression?
The one who had been abandoned and used was clearly her.
Am I really some very important experimental subject?
A tentacle pressed against the back of her hand, flattening the bulging vein and smearing it with transparent mucus.
Li An stubbornly looked up, forcing herself to meet her gaze. Her sky-blue eyes reflected Ji Yulin’s face.
Ji Yulin looked down, her posture condescending, as she gazed down at Li An.
A silent standoff.
One felt deceived, the other felt abandoned. Neither was willing to back down.
The waves outside the window were roaring, constantly beating against the ship. For some reason, the sea was particularly turbulent tonight, rocking the ship violently.
Looking through the special glass window, one could faintly see a thick layer of clouds, without a single glimmer of light, pressing down.
Her breathing made her chest rise and fall. The hand, wrapped ever tighter by the tentacles, trembled slightly.
Only now did Li An notice a small red mole on the side of Ji Yulin’s index finger.
Her gaze involuntarily shifted for a moment, ending the stare-down.
Ji Yulin’s crow-feather lashes fluttered. The person who had just been interrogating her coldly suddenly wore an expression of extreme sadness and said with a trembling voice, “Are you leaving me again?”
Li An was stunned. Before she could react, the ship suddenly lurched violently.
—Beep beep beep!
A sharp, urgent alarm blared. Someone shouted, “Sea beast attack! All departments, prepare to engage!”
Before the voice had faded, a multitude of footsteps, some hurried, some slow, sounded. Then, a whale’s cry was heard from outside the window, and a huge object crashed into the ship again.
In the room, Ji Yulin was caught off guard. Her body swayed with the impact. Before she could steady herself, she was knocked over and, in the next second, fell heavily onto the iron floor.
—Thump!
The little octopus, held in her hand, was naturally forced to follow. Her vision blurred, and she instinctively squeezed her eyes shut.
But after waiting for a moment, the expected pain never came. She was well-protected by Ji Yulin’s hand.
Li An quickly opened her eyes and saw Ji Yulin curled up on the floor, sucking in her breath in pain.
Human?!
She subconsciously opened her mouth to shout, then caught herself in the next second. Two tentacles pushed against the web of her thumb, trying to pull her body out. Then, all eight tentacles scrambled and tumbled, frantically running toward Ji Yulin.
But this action was misunderstood by Ji Yulin. She raised her hand and grabbed the little octopus again.
She was actually in too much pain to have much strength, but Li An didn’t dare to struggle anymore. She let Ji Yulin bend her arm and bring her closer.
Ji Yulin?
Are you okay?
The unspoken words were in her eyes, filled with worry.
Ji Yulin’s face was pale, and she was covered in a cold sweat, as if in extreme pain. The clothes she had hastily thrown on were wrinkled. Her legs were bent, her back arched. Even when she was forced into the sea by the mutated beast and stranded on the deserted island, she hadn’t looked so wretched.
The tentacles struggled. Ji Yulin’s knuckles tightened and then loosened. The red marks left by the suckers were on the raised parts of her knuckles. At some point, the fingers that had been flushed red from the hot water had turned icy cold.
“Don’t go,” Ji Yulin said with difficulty, her voice low and hoarse, like fragile white porcelain suddenly shattering.
The tentacle that wanted to touch her ultimately couldn’t reach, and remained stiffly retracted in the distance.
Ji Yulin slowly lowered her head, her forehead resting against the little octopus’s head, her voice pleading.
“Don’t leave me.”
The person who had been so cold and distant during the day was now wretchedly pressing her face against the little octopus, murmuring in a low voice, “I’m begging you, don’t leave me.”
Li An didn’t know how to respond. In her mind was the image of Ji Yulin coldly retorting, “She’s not my pet,” and before her was the pitiful, pleading Ji Yulin.
It was still noisy outside the ship. The situation sounded serious. Shouts and bangs were constant. The already restless sea grew even more turbulent, crashing against the side of the ship with loud thumps.
Li An faintly sensed a feeling of unease and subconsciously looked toward the door.
But Ji Yulin clutched her even tighter and once again said with difficulty, “Don’t go.”
How could she explain?
Li An was once again filled with frustration. If only she could speak.
But she could only rub her chubby head against the other woman’s forehead.
Human, little octopus isn’t running.
Little octopus is just a little…
A little annoyed.
The conversation from the afternoon surfaced again. The feeling of annoyance didn’t lessen. Instead, it mixed with her current emotions, becoming even more complex and tangled.
Two short, chubby tentacles couldn’t help but lift, trying to hug Ji Yulin’s head, but they could only reach her temples at most. Then they patted her gently.
Human, does it hurt?
How can you be so smart and so stupid at the same time?
Her chubby head rubbed back and forth, wiping away the cold sweat that had appeared.
“Don’t go…” Ji Yulin murmured again. She seemed to have recovered a little and forced a smile, “What are you annoyed about?”
Li An was lost in her emotions and didn’t react for a moment, responding in her own mind.
Just annoyed.
It’s your fault. You’re a super annoying person.
Ji Yulin paused, looked up at the little octopus, and said through the pain, “Did I make you angry?”
Before she could get an answer, she apologized, “I’m sorry for making you angry. Please don’t suddenly leave me, okay?”
But the little octopus didn’t soften, still lost in her emotions.
No way, you’re a bad guy.
You’re going to cut me into slices, and you won’t even let me run.
Ji Yulin couldn’t help but be puzzled and immediately asked, “What slices?”
Your experiment.
The little octopus was angry just thinking about it. She immediately let go of her head and began to gesture with her tentacles, wanting to accuse Ji Yulin of her outrageous behavior.
But just as her tentacles were raised, forming a circle in the air as if holding a watermelon, her clear blue eyes suddenly froze. She stared at Ji Yulin and blinked in disbelief.
Human?
How can you hear little octopus talk?!
