Chapter 13:
How can you hear little octopus talk?!
The little octopus stared blankly at Ji Yulin, her face a mask of shock and bewilderment.
It had all happened so suddenly that she couldn’t process it. She even forgot to worry about Ji Yulin, her mind consumed by the fact that the other woman could hear her thoughts.
Human, you???
The little octopus instantly became wary, squinting at Ji Yulin.
Human, how can you hear little octopus talk?
Why did you pretend you didn’t know before?
Have you always been able to hear octopus talk?
A jumble of thoughts popped up one after another. The little octopus’s nerves tensed, and she couldn’t help but be on guard.
Seeing her like this, Ji Yulin’s expression softened a little. She immediately reassured her, “Don’t be afraid. On the island, I couldn’t hear your voice.”
Huh?
Then how can you suddenly hear me?
Her head tilted. The little octopus grew even more confused. All other questions were now overshadowed by this one. The previous tension dissipated without a sound.
Ji Yulin inexplicably felt like smiling but pressed her lips together. She was still in the same curled-up position on the floor. The intense pain had subsided a little, and she was able to speak normally, “I only just started hearing you.”
Just now?
The little octopus blinked and unconsciously raised a tentacle, forming a question mark.
Ji Yulin’s expression was open. She lowered her eyes to meet her gaze and asked, “Did you advance a tier?”
At this, the thought of the plate of tier-three beast meat came to mind. Li An was suddenly enlightened. So that was the change?
So she could communicate with Ji Yulin now?
The very thing she had been complaining about just a moment ago was suddenly resolved. Li An didn’t know whether to laugh or throw a tantrum. Then her emotions turned to guilt. After all, she was the one who had been caught trying to run away. Before, she could feign ignorance because she couldn’t speak, but now…
This ability had come at a very inopportune time.
The little octopus shrank her head, wanting to hide in Ji Yulin’s palm again. But this time, the woman wouldn’t allow it. She pressed closer to her and repeated, “What are you annoyed about?”
“Why did you want to leave me?”
The question came back around. The little octopus stiffened, patted Ji Yulin’s head with a tentacle, then pulled herself out of Ji Yulin’s hand and stood properly in front of her.
It was still very noisy outside the room. The whole ship felt like it was swaying, and even the lights on the ceiling were flickering.
The little octopus hesitated. After a long moment, she finally gathered her courage again and slowly looked at Ji Yulin.
Human…
What is our relationship now?
But Ji Yulin said, “I can’t hear you anymore.”
Li An froze for a moment, then blinked at Ji Yulin.
She had actually gotten used to expressing herself with these simple expressions and gestures.
Ji Yulin was also used to it and immediately responded, “I couldn’t hear you after you left.”
Then, Ji Yulin’s expression softened, and she extended her index finger toward Li An.
“Say something else,” Ji Yulin prompted.
Only then did Li An understand. She guessed that if she wasn’t in physical contact with Ji Yulin, the other woman couldn’t hear her voice. So she quickly extended a tentacle and wrapped it around her.
Ji Yulin?
The little octopus’s voice was childish, with a strange, childlike quality, as she called out curiously and tentatively.
Ji Yulin’s expression relaxed, and she replied warmly, “I’m here.”
The warmth of her fingertip ignited the tentacle. The little octopus looked up at her, her courage already spent. She couldn’t repeat the question. A jumble of thoughts ran through her mind, and in the end, she could only squeeze out one sentence.
I don’t like it here.
“Hmm?” Ji Yulin was always patient with her, waiting for her to explain the nonsensical statement.
For some reason, Li An was reminded of the nights on the island, when the bonfire was lit. Ji Yulin had been just as patient, the firelight flickering in her eyes as she looked at her, her expression gentle and indulgent.
It made the little octopus’s tentacles curl up just as they had before, and she let out a mumbled complaint.
I don’t like those two people from today.
Ji Yulin frowned slightly and said, “Yu Huan and the other one?”
Before the little octopus could answer, her tone grew heavier, and she said quickly, “What’s wrong? Did they bully you?”
Not really…
The little octopus felt a strange guilt. First, she had eavesdropped on someone’s conversation, and then she had secretly gotten herself worked up over it. No matter how she put it, it was embarrassing to admit.
She held it in and held it in, and in the end, only managed to say, I just don’t like them…
It was indeed a bit unreasonable, but Ji Yulin was indulgent. She touched the little octopus’s head with her forehead and said softly, “I know.”
“I won’t let them appear in front of you again.”
Because of the chaos outside, the electricity was affected, and the lights flickered, concealing the gloom in Ji Yulin’s eyes.
The little octopus opposite her scratched her head, sensing that something was not quite right. But then she remembered the contempt in the two women’s voices and didn’t say anything to stop her, just assuming Ji Yulin would send them elsewhere.
If possible, making them clean the toilets wouldn’t be a bad punishment, the little octopus thought viciously, but she didn’t convey this thought to the other woman.
As she was thinking, there was a knock on the door. Someone called out nervously, “Professor Ji? Professor Ji?!”
“A sea beast is attacking the ship. We’re doing our best to clear it. Please stay in your room. The chaos will be over soon.”
The human and the octopus both turned to look at the door.
The person outside got no response and, fearing that something had happened inside, knocked louder, “Professor Ji? Professor?”
“Are you alright, Professor?”
Seeing that the person was about to kick the door in, Ji Yulin managed to prop herself up. The pain, which had just subsided, flared up again with the movement. She frowned tightly and called out through the pain, “I know.”
Such an obvious reaction was impossible for Li An to miss. The image of Ji Yulin falling heavily to the ground flashed in her mind again. She was filled with both guilt and worry. The tentacle wrapped around the other woman’s finger tightened, and she looked up, staring at Ji Yulin, her clear eyes filled with concern.
“Professor, what’s wrong with you?”
The person outside heard that something was wrong.
This didn’t make Ji Yulin relax at all. Her voice was low as she said, “I’m fine.”
Fearing Ji Yulin’s previous intimidating presence, the person outside didn’t dare to say more. After a few more careful words of advice and receiving no reply, they left.
The room was quiet again. Li An, who had been waiting, was about to speak when she saw Ji Yulin release her teeth. Her lower lip was already bitten and bleeding. She didn’t know how much it must have hurt to bite it like that.
The little octopus was so anxious she didn’t know what to say. She had just gotten used to being a little octopus who couldn’t speak, and now she could suddenly communicate with someone. The sudden change was hard for Li An to adapt to. She suddenly let go of Ji Yulin’s hand, and her eight chubby tentacles scurried back and forth on the floor.
Very anxious, but don’t know what to be anxious about.
Ji Yulin felt like smiling. She reached out and rubbed the little octopus’s head, saying in a completely different, gentle voice, “It’s okay.”
It was the same phrase again. The former had only made her feel cold, like an impatient dismissal. The latter was filled with a strong sense of comfort.
If anyone had seen her, the huge contrast between her before and after would have given them a strange sense of split personality.
But here, there was only a little octopus running around in anxious circles. She reached out a tentacle and placed it on the hand Ji Yulin had on her head, her expression suddenly becoming very serious.
Human, don’t move.
Little octopus will go get a doctor for you.
The smile could no longer be hidden. Ji Yulin pressed her lips together, then rubbed the little octopus’s head vigorously again and said, “I’m fine.”
Fearing Li An wouldn’t believe her, she added, “Really, I’m fine. Just let me sit and rest for a bit.”
Really?
The little octopus showed a doubtful expression. One tentacle even lifted and formed a big question mark at Ji Yulin.
“Really,” Ji Yulin showed no sign of annoyance. To prove it to Li An, she leaned back against the wall and sat down in a relatively comfortable position to rest.
Li An’s gaze lingered on her tightly knitted brows. Her round head was still damp with Ji Yulin’s cold sweat. She didn’t know what she was feeling. She dejectedly scraped the floor with a tentacle. Then, as if remembering something, she suddenly lifted her head and patted Ji Yulin’s hand with a tentacle.
Human, wait for me.
Without waiting for a reply, she immediately turned around, her chubby tentacles pattering forward. In the blink of an eye, she was at the leg of the table. Without pausing, she grabbed it with two tentacles and scurried up like an agile monkey.
Ji Yulin didn’t stop her. Her gaze swept quickly over the closed iron door and windows, then returned to the little octopus, never leaving her again.
The little octopus, with a burst of energy, climbed onto the table and began to pull at the water pitcher with six tentacles. Because the pitcher was a good bit taller than her, she struggled greatly.
Two tentacles pushed forward with all their might, two clung to the bottom of the pitcher, trying to maintain balance, and two pressed against the table to support herself. Under the extreme strain, she could even be seen trembling slightly. And the last two, one reached for a cup, the other helped wherever it could, in a great hurry.
In this way, she finally managed to fill a cup of water, spilling a large puddle in the process.
But the little octopus glanced at it and immediately looked away, pretending she hadn’t seen anything. She lifted the cup with two tentacles and, stepping in the water on the table, pattered back the way she came.
After all that bustling, she was finally done. The little octopus held the cup up to Ji Yulin, freed a tentacle to press against the back of her hand, and unconsciously lifted her head, a little bit proud.
Human, drink water.
But the expected praise never came. Instead, Ji Yulin showed a troubled expression.
Human?
The little octopus tilted her head, and the cup she was holding swayed.
Ji Yulin pressed her lips together. The bleeding wound was stained with water, making it even redder. Her expression was hesitant. She didn’t want to hurt the little octopus’s feelings, so she tried to lift her hand.
But even with so much effort, her hand only managed to touch Li An’s head. Any higher and she let out a soft hiss. But she didn’t stop. She bit her lower lip again and, forcing herself, gripped the cup, trying to lift it, but almost lost her grip and spilled it. The little octopus was so scared that she quickly extended two more tentacles and held it steady.
But even with her quick reaction, she still got a splash of water on herself.
She blinked dazedly, a little unsure if Ji Yulin had done it on purpose or not. Just a moment ago, she could lift her hand to pat her head, but now she couldn’t even hold a cup of water.
Ji Yulin already wore a guilty expression. She wanted to reach out and wipe it for her, but the pain made her frown. She could only apologize softly, “I’m sorry, I can’t seem to lift my hand.”
Ji Yulin didn’t have a delicate, pitiful appearance. Her overly slender figure had a willow-like resilience, making it impossible for people to look down on her because of her delicate features. And her personality was the same. No matter what kind of crisis she had faced before, she had never shown a vulnerable expression.
But at this moment, she was upset because she couldn’t accept Li An’s kindness. She tried her best to try again, but her hand only reached her head before falling limply.
“I’m sorry, I…” Ji Yulin couldn’t help but apologize again.
Li An, knowing the reason for all this, how could she still have any doubts? She even took all the blame on herself.
If she hadn’t secretly run away, how would Ji Yulin have fallen? And when she fell, she had subconsciously protected her with her hand, otherwise her hand wouldn’t have been so seriously injured.
And even with such an injury, she still had to endure the pain to comfort her, pretending to be fine. If it hadn’t been exposed when she tried to lift the cup, she would have definitely continued to pretend that nothing was wrong.
The little octopus, with a head full of water, was drenched, almost drowned in guilt.
She can only lift her arm a little. Is it a fracture?
Human, are you in a lot of pain?
Human is good, little octopus is bad.
Water was still dripping, wetting her sapphire-like eyes.
“Alright, it’s not your fault. Don’t be sad.”
“I’ll be fine after a little more rest.”
“It’s okay.”
Ji Yulin is so good. Even in this state, she’s still comforting little octopus.
Li An was dejected, the cup pressed against her head, like a child who had done something wrong.
How could Ji Yulin blame her? She would only coax her gently, “It’s okay. How about you feed me?”
The little octopus subconsciously nodded, then suddenly realized.
What did Ji Yulin just say???
