Chapter 21 p1:
Baby… Mama… Baby…
The two words spun in her mind, leaving Li An so shocked she was speechless. Her mind was in a chaotic whirl, as if three brains were spinning at high speed, not three hearts pounding.
What should she do now?
Raise a tentacle and say, “Hi! Mama, I’m your octopus baby!”
Or: “Mama, Mama, I’m your favorite baby!”
Or perhaps: “Oh no, dear human, although you love me very much, you cannot be an octopus’s mother. You don’t have eight tentacles, nor do you have three hearts, and you certainly can’t breathe through gills. You should go find your real two-legged, one-headed child, okay?”
Li An’s face was a mess of confusion. She even automatically added Patrick Star’s voice to these lines.
If her head weren’t still being held, completely suspended in mid-air, Li An would have wanted to drown herself in the water, becoming the first octopus in history to drown.
But she couldn’t.
She couldn’t even refute it, because she was the one who had initiated this form of address. When Ji Yulin had asked her, wanting to confirm their relationship, she had dazedly called her that.
She had thought that her avoidance over the past two days had made Ji Yulin completely forget about it, but she hadn’t expected her to remember it until now, and even start to actively practice her duties as a mother.
Looking down at the little yellow duck, everything that had been confusing before was now explained.
My Little Ji? Now she’s my Ji-Ma.
She didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. She finally didn’t have to worry about Ji Yulin slicing her up, but the situation didn’t seem to have gotten any better.
Perhaps seeing Li An’s stunned state, Ji Yulin changed from holding to cradling, placing the little octopus in her hands. The dangling tentacles finally had something solid to hold onto and subconsciously clung to her palm and fingers.
“What’s wrong, baby?” Ji Yulin’s voice was gentle, as if there were no intention of teasing her at all, her eyes filled with concern.
The other creature couldn’t see through it. From the bottom of her heart, she believed that her Little Ji was pure and kind, only ever bullied by others, never the other way around. So she didn’t think in any other direction.
A fool’s confidence.
Seeing the little octopus not answering, Ji Yulin lowered her head, her forehead touching hers, and their eyes met.
Compared to the little octopus’s clarity, her pupils were darker. If not under direct sunlight, they were as black as stones, making people feel overly cold and distant.
Her gaze shifted for a moment, then couldn’t help but turn back. At such a close distance, she could easily see a hint of intricate amber patterns.
Her fluttering eyelashes brushed against the little octopus. The sky-clean eyes reflected a different color. Her tentacles wrapped even tighter, squeezing her index finger.
“Ji Yulin…” she suddenly called out.
“I’m here,” the woman replied without the slightest pause, then her tone changed, and she chuckled, “Why aren’t you calling me Mama anymore?”
The overflowing emotions instantly vanished, not a single trace could be recaptured, leaving only the rapidly rising temperature.
“Ji Yulin!” the little octopus cried out, both shy and annoyed.
“What’s wrong?” the woman’s voice softened even more, her tone drawn out and rising at the end, and then she added with a hint of pitifulness, “Why aren’t you calling me Mama anymore?”
Why can’t she get over it?!
The little octopus retreated, trying to create a sliver of distance, but the places where they had touched were still burning hot.
“Hmm?”
The person pretending to be pitiful was actually pressing forward.
It was as if in their relationship, Li An seemed to have the upper hand, but whether to advance or retreat was all at Ji Yulin’s whim.
Ji Yulin was the master.
The thought suddenly popped into Li An’s head. The entangled tentacles loosened, and she unconsciously retreated, step by step, to the edge of her palm, and then suddenly fell.
—Splash!
The sound of water was heard, splashing up crystal-clear droplets. The little octopus was submerged in the water, looking up at the white foam rising before her. Then she saw the swaying water, the annoying little yellow duck, and a blurred Ji Yulin.
Her body hit the bottom of the tub. It didn’t hurt, but it made her head jolt.
And then…
Her closed legs clamped the little octopus.
It was a subconscious action after a moment of panic. Fortunately, even though the force was uncontrolled, the softness of the place caused no discomfort.
The little octopus, who thought she had been clear-headed for a moment, was once again pulled into the trap named Ji Yulin.
Her tentacles pressed against the delicate skin, unconsciously climbing and leaving red marks. She couldn’t see the path ahead, only blindly charging forward, trying to escape, but in the end, she bumped into the most inappropriate of places.
“Mmph…” a muffled groan came from above the water.
“Don’t,”
The upper hand had finally changed. The mischievous person was finally getting her punishment.
A frantic hand tried to grab her, but the creature, who was in a panic and only knew how to dart around, was completely unpredictable. The moment her fingertips touched a tentacle, it slipped away again.
This was completely different from before. Last time, she had stealthily unbuttoned her shirt, and every feigned attempt to hold her down was a deliberate act of herding the little octopus elsewhere.
But now, it was completely beyond Ji Yulin’s expectations. She didn’t understand why the little octopus had suddenly fallen. She had subconsciously clamped her legs, only to have her escape, and now she was reaping what she had sown.
“Don’t bump,” Ji Yulin tried to stop her, her bent legs breaking the surface of the water. The swaying waves splashed over the side of the tub, like a chaotic little rain.
The bathroom window was only open a crack. A cool breeze slipped in, branding the hot skin. Her wet hair dripped water, which fell onto her collarbone and then splashed with her movements.
The water on the floor flowed along the grooves of the tiles, converging and colliding, and finally all flowing toward the drain.
The little octopus had completely lost her composure, only concerned with fleeing. One moment she felt delicate skin, the next she felt someone grabbing her tentacle, and then she felt something pricking her head. She had no time to care, only desperately pushing forward.
The water was churned up again and again, and the little yellow ducks were scattered everywhere.
The little octopus once again recklessly bumped into that spot. Ji Yulin quickly tried to scoop her up, but this time, the little octopus didn’t run away. Instead, she latched onto Ji Yulin’s leg, and all eight tentacles pushed forward, climbing up.
Her peach-pink head broke the surface of the water. Sanity returned for a moment, only to be shattered by a quickly grabbing hand. Her mind was filled with “it’s over, it’s over, I’m going to be punished.”
Facing the place she had climbed before, the little octopus no longer hesitated. She pressed against the skin, climbed over each rib, until she reached her shoulder and neck.
With no time to catch her breath, a chubby tentacle was caught in the triangular hollow formed by her collarbone and shoulder, unconsciously leaving a faint round mark. Then she turned and climbed.
She turned to the back of her neck, and had just reached her shoulder blade when she was herded upward again.
Even in the sea, being chased by a mutated beast, she had never been so frantic and nervous.
What did I just bump into?
This is more of a hooligan than a hooligan.
The little octopus, who had been darting around in the hot water, was now hotter than the water, red enough to be almost transparent.
The indescribable sensation was finally suppressed a little. Ji Yulin finally regained some clarity. The earlobes under her hair were red, whether from the hot water or for some other reason.
Her long, bent legs came together, unconsciously rubbing against each other, then she restrained herself and rested them on the cool porcelain wall above the water, trying to regain some clarity.
Then, she turned her head to look elsewhere.
The little octopus was in a panic, looking like a pitiful creature who had done something wrong. After running around for a long time, she still hadn’t found a safe place. In the end, following the instinct etched in her bones, she curled up between Ji Yulin’s collarbones.
All eight tentacles were wrapped around her head, her eyes squeezed shut. Her palm-sized body was trembling slightly. Even a stranger who knew nothing would have been able to tell that she had done something wrong.
When Ji Yulin moved, she shot up again, about to flee over her shoulder.
But Ji Yulin simply leaned back, pressing her shoulder and neck against the wall of the tub, leaving no gap, completely blocking her path.
The little octopus, in a panic, ran toward her shoulder.
Ji Yulin deliberately raised her shoulder.
The creature, like a frightened bird, turned and fled.
The person, who had planned this all along, tilted her head.
Inertia pushed her forward before reason could. All eight tentacles shot forward, and the little octopus leaned in and bumped against Ji Yulin’s lips.
It seemed like there was a very faint sound.
Li An couldn’t even tell what it was. Her already lagging brain completely crashed.
She could only understand one thing.
She had bumped into Ji Yulin’s lips, or rather…
She had kissed, no, Ji Yulin had kissed her, although she had been the one to initiate it.
The tentacles on her shoulder and neck unconsciously contracted, like a kitten kneading, constantly blooming and tightening. She knew she shouldn’t be doing this, but there was no other way to relieve the tension.
She didn’t know what to do. Her blank mind offered no useful suggestions. The little octopus’s forehead was still pressed against Ji Yulin’s lips.
If viewed from another angle, it wouldn’t even be considered a kiss. It was more like a rebellious little octopus defying a human, bumping her with her head, pressing against her chattering mouth.
When the slow brain finally made a “click,” Li An belatedly realized that she should run away quickly.
The tentacles behind her carefully retreated half a step. Before she could create any distance, Ji Yulin leaned in again.
This time, it could be called a kiss.
Ji Yulin’s eyes were lowered, the coldness etched in her bones had long since melted, replaced by a warm pool of spring water. It lingered on her full lips, gently and softly pressing against the little octopus’s forehead, then slowly moved away.
“Alright, stop messing around,” she said.
Although she had experienced something very outrageous, with the panicked little octopus having almost caressed every part of her body, taking full advantage of her, she showed no annoyance, as if it were just a trivial matter.
Li An was stunned for a moment, unable to react. She even suspected that Ji Yulin was tricking her, and that after this was over, she would cut her into slices. After all…
This was Ji Yulin’s first kiss.
When the last two words appeared in her mind, all explanations were no longer possible.
The little octopus was a bit dazed. She wanted to lift a tentacle and wipe Ji Yulin’s mouth, but she was afraid of doing something wrong and causing a more serious consequence.
The raised tentacle fell again.
But Ji Yulin lowered her head again and placed a second kiss on the little octopus’s forehead.
Soft and light, like a sweet piece of cotton touching her chubby head, as fleeting as a dragonfly on water, yet it created ripples upon ripples.
—Splash.
Water splashed out of the bathtub again. The window was pushed open wider by the wind.
Ji Yulin awkwardly rubbed the little octopus’s head and coaxed, “If you don’t want to play, we won’t play. Let’s go to sleep, okay?”
All the explanations that had filled her mind suddenly vanished, not a single drop remaining.
The little octopus’s mind was blank. All she could hear was Ji Yulin’s voice echoing in her ears.
“It’s time to sleep, baby.”
The little octopus was lifted up again. After struggling to escape for so long, she ended up in Ji Yulin’s palm after all.
She stood up, stepped out.
A white bath towel was wrapped around Ji Yulin, and a towel of the same color was wrapped around the little octopus. Every sucker was carefully wiped clean, and finally, she was placed on the pillow of the double bed.
The little octopus didn’t dare to open her eyes. She had just done two earth-shattering bad things, and now she was so guilty that she didn’t dare to look at all.
A tentacle hooked the blanket and pulled it over her.
Human, good night.
I hope that when you wake up, you will have forgotten about today’s events. Of course, you can also forget about the “Mama” thing. Wait, since it’s already like this, let’s just forget about the secret escape attempt too, and the island…
The more the little octopus recalled, the more there was to forget. She pulled the blanket over her tighter.
Human, why don’t you just get amnesia and forget everything before tonight? I can turn over a new leaf and go back to being an honest, proper octopus.
Human, octopus swears she will be honest and proper, really!
On the other side, after Ji Yulin had dried herself and changed her clothes—the same style as before—she placed her rimless glasses on the table.
She hadn’t comforted the little creature right away, not because she was angry about what had happened before. At first, she had been a little flustered, but then it had turned into a half-willing indulgence, even guiding the little octopus to press against her.
So how could she be angry?
Although her original intention had been to tease the little octopus and coax her into confirming their ambiguous relationship, an accident had led to a greater reward.
Ji Yulin’s gaze shifted, sweeping over the small lump in the blanket.
Her current silence was just to give the greatly stimulated little octopus some time to calm down and sort herself out.
She turned and walked to the open window.
It was now late at night. There was no moon or stars in the sky. Only a few scattered lights remained in the town, flickering in the fog. The distant coast was long out of sight, and even the sound of the waves had been completely swallowed.
Ji Yulin stood there, a thoughtful look in her eyes. Then her gaze fell, fixing on the sunflowers in the flowerbed.
They were completely unaffected by the night. Instead, wrapped in the mist, they looked even more vibrant and brilliant.
A moment later, the window was closed. With a clang of steel, the room was completely locked.
And at that moment, the seemingly harmless sunflowers all turned their heads to look at the closed window.
A petal fell and was quickly blown away by the wind.
The fog grew thicker.
