Chapter 21 p2
It was a dream.
Darkness pulled Li An down, down into a cold, sterile, enclosed laboratory.
—Beep, beep.
The numbers on the screen on the wall, representing time, changed. As 59 minutes ended, the numbers returned to zero, announcing the arrival of three in the morning.
The screen of the desk in the corner was still on, displaying yesterday’s examination report.
Post-apocalypse year 327, September 27th.
Today’s experimental subject was agitated and injured three researchers. Electric shock was used.
Severed tentacle has not healed. Regeneration ability weakened?
Implanted sample 367 has died. Can the human body still not withstand the power of a mutated beast?
The Research Institute has requested a suspension of the experiment and a change of experimental subject.
The rest of the content was blurred.
A cold, mechanical voice suddenly sounded.
“Iris verification successful, fingerprint correct, identity verification passed.”
“Welcome, Professor Ji.”
The one-ton iron door slid open to both sides. Ji Yulin, in a white lab coat and rimless glasses, walked in unhurriedly.
At the same time, the pool in the middle of the lab, half the size of a football field, lit up with a deep blue light, illuminating the enclosed glass chambers that circled it.
Without needing any more light, Ji Yulin’s footsteps expertly navigated around all obstacles until she was in front of the glass chamber, which was as thick as a wall.
The glass reflected her face, more mature than in reality, around thirty-five years old. There were a few fine lines at the corners of her eyes, but this didn’t soften her edges at all. Instead, she was even more distant than when she was younger, like a deep-sea iceberg hidden at the poles, exuding a bone-chilling cold before one even got close.
She didn’t stop for long. Then she raised her hand, her palm pressing against the glass, revealing faint lines.
In the next second, the calm water surface trembled, and a huge octopus tentacle shot out, slamming against the glass wall. Suckers the size of a child’s fist immediately attached to it, pulling a deep-sea behemoth into view.
Its gem-blue eyes were deep, staring straight at Ji Yulin, their gazes colliding.
[Human…]
A low, hoarse female voice came from the tentacle, through the glass wall, to Ji Yulin’s fingertips.
The water in the pool was still sloshing back and forth, creating huge waves.
This terrifying scene didn’t startle Ji Yulin at all. The eyes behind her lenses were still cold.
“I’m here,” she said, her low, hoarse voice tinged with the fatigue of a sleepless night. Only now could the red bloodshot lines in her eyes be seen.
The octopus inside didn’t respond. Instead, it lowered its tentacle, smashing it into the water.
Then, Ji Yulin raised her hand and pressed a button beside her.
A suction force suddenly appeared in the pool, and then the water level began to drop. When the pool was twenty centimeters lower, the glass cover slowly opened.
Before a gap wide enough for a person to pass through had formed, a lurking tentacle squeezed out, eagerly reaching for Ji Yulin’s ankle.
But before it was halfway there, Ji Yulin stepped on it.
Unlike the little octopus’s peach pink, the giant octopus’s color was deeper, especially the suckers and the tips of her tentacles, which were almost a vibrant red. Her translucent skin looked slick. When stepped on, it exuded a mature, astringent quality.
[Professor.]
The form of address suddenly changed, but it didn’t make it any more proper. Instead, it was like opening some kind of floodgate.
The tentacle under her foot climbed up, trying its best to touch her ankle with its tip, the only exposed skin just below her pant leg.
Then, a satisfied sigh was heard.
[My professor.]
This outrageous act was tacitly approved by Ji Yulin.
Perhaps such acts had been carried out countless times in the dead of night, unknown to anyone.
Two more tentacles emerged from the water, expertly removing Ji Yulin’s shoes and placing them neatly to the side. Then they rolled up her pant legs to her knees.
It was almost too attentive, completely at odds with the image of a deep-sea behemoth. It was more like a chef, eagerly preparing ingredients, ready to savor a delicious meal.
But Ji Yulin, the ingredient, was as calm as ever and finally stepped forward.
The few tentacles were very particular. They all swished in the water, even scrubbing themselves seriously, and then quickly climbed onto Ji Yulin’s ankle, coiling around it like snakes.
[Professor…]
The low, hoarse voice was filled with desire, the contracting suckers with elation, which was then forcibly suppressed, leaving only a glistening liquid on her skin.
The door behind her had long since been locked. Silence spread from the dark corners. The machines on the floor operated silently, and the computer screen went dark.
The tentacles climbed up, pushing the trousers up. They almost completely enveloped her entire calf, still greedy, uncontrollably wanting more.
[Ji, Yulin…]
It urged.
Ji Yulin didn’t stop it. The swaying water reflected a shattered light on her delicate features. In the half-light, she looked strangely bewitching.
Her footsteps stopped at the edge of the pool, on the verge of falling but unwilling to go down.
The coiled tentacles didn’t dare to pull, only an irrepressible urgency in her voice: [Ji Yulin?]
She used emphasis as an urge: [You promised me.]
The body submerged in the pool once again emerged from the water. Only now could her full form be seen.
The previously spacious pool now seemed infinitely narrow in her presence. Her nearly ten-meter body was enormous, extremely intimidating. Her tentacles moved continuously like snakes. The most conspicuous was one of her severed tentacles, cut off at some point, the wound still not healed.
Ji Yulin’s gaze shifted, fixing on that spot.
But this creature, a top predator of the sea, showed no intention of hiding. It even deliberately presented the wound to Ji Yulin.
[You promised me.]
[You know, electric shocks don’t work on me anymore.]
[If it weren’t for you, they would be helpless against me.]
Her low whisper was tinged with a smile, unable to suppress the contempt in it, the disdain for weak humans. She even began to threaten her directly: [The person who was implanted with my severed limb died today?]
[Let me think, what was her name?]
[Ling Yun?]
At this name, Ji Yulin’s eyes trembled, finally showing a hint of change.
The malicious octopus didn’t stop. Instead, she emphasized her words and continued: [How pitiful. She was probably the last one who trusted you, willing to be your experimental subject, right?]
The tentacles in the water swayed, creating splashes.
[The Research Institute has already forbidden you from continuing the experiment, right?]
[How strange…]
The drawn-out words were tinged with a sneer. The tentacles, which had only been coiled around her calf, moved, finally leaving red marks on her pale skin.
[Clearly, so many people have succeeded, proving that mutated beast limbs can be transplanted into the human body, thereby gaining some of the beast’s abilities.]
[But our so-called scientific genius, Professor Ji, can’t succeed. Every one she does dies.]
[The direction is correct, the steps are correct, and even the human subjects are carefully selected to ensure they are in optimal condition for the transplant. But the longest record is only one week.]
[Oh, that was Ling Yun.]
[She screamed so miserably these past few days, constantly begging you to kill her.]
“Shut up,” Ji Yulin finally spoke, her eyes filled with suppressed emotion.
But the other didn’t feel afraid. Instead, she chuckled softly.
She knew this malicious creature wouldn’t stop. Any more attempts to stop her would be futile.
Ji Yulin took a deep breath, closed her eyes, and stepped into the pool.
The expected fall didn’t happen.
An octopus had caught her first, a tentacle wrapping around her waist, easily lifting her.
[Don’t get your clothes wet, my dear professor.]
[Otherwise, you’ll complain that I got you all wet and you can’t sneak back.]
The seemingly considerate creature used a tentacle to push aside her white coat, slowly pulling down her already rumpled trousers. The previous urgency suddenly disappeared. She became a gourmand, looking forward to a delicious meal, and began to slowly and methodically peel off her prey’s shell until her fair, delicate skin was revealed.
She even spoke in a consultative tone: [I won’t take off your shirt. I like the way you look in a white shirt and glasses.]
[Very delicious.]
Ji Yulin didn’t respond. She had always been a woman of few words, and now she was even more concise. Apart from experiments, few people could get more than a few words out of her.
But the octopus didn’t mind, because she knew that soon, Ji Yulin would make many sounds that she loved to hear.
It was a low, hoarse, nasal sound, like a coquettish plea or a sigh, somewhere between a gasp and a sob.
Restrained and patient, very pleasant to the ear.
At this thought, it was as if she could hear such sounds again, and her tentacles couldn’t help but tighten.
It was like eating a macadamia nut. The hardest shell always hid the most delicious fruit.
Her trousers and coat were placed next to her shoes, even neatly folded.
There was no need to worry about the laboratory floor. The daily cleaning and disinfection were almost rigorous. Even if a small bug snuck in, the strong smell of disinfectant would force it to turn and flee.
Two more buttons on her shirt were unbuttoned, just enough to reveal half of her straight collarbone and a hint of her curves. Paired with Ji Yulin’s cold face, it was the octopus’s favorite look.
A nearly perfect presentation.
The octopus let out a satisfied sigh and murmured in a hoarse voice: [Professor…]
A tentacle slowly descended, pulling Ji Yulin into the water. The white shirt became transparent, and the ripples lifted the hem.
Of course, she wouldn’t fall. The octopus wouldn’t bully her food like that. It would affect the taste too much.
A tentacle wrapped around her slender body, pressing her against the edge of the pool. The water level was just below Ji Yulin’s heart, the most comfortable and least oppressive position in the water.
[Professor…]
The connoisseur, about to pass judgment, sized up her food. A satisfied smile flashed in her deep blue eyes. She even lowered her head and rubbed against the other.
Ji Yulin showed no resistance. Her gaze was still on the severed tentacle. She asked calmly, “Why has it stopped healing?”
[Tsk.]
The question displeased the octopus. She complained: [You’re always like this, bringing up the most boring topics at times like this.]
“Because this is the only time you’re willing to tell the truth,” Ji Yulin’s voice was flat, even as a tentacle slipped in from the hem of her shirt, pressing against the top of the softest part, deliberately rubbing back and forth.
[Is that so? Professor.]
[I have always been completely open with you.]
The octopus emphasized her words.
