Chapter 2: Held Her in Her Arms
“Okay,” Zhang Can’er replied, her voice trembling.
She watched Wan Feng sit silently in the chair, not even looking at her, and sighed. She had actually just wanted to thank her.
She wasn’t the type to fawn over someone who gave her the cold shoulder, but the woman had, after all, saved her life. She had to at least say thank you.
If Wan Feng hadn’t stopped her in time, she might have been swarmed and devoured by those things the moment she went outside.
No matter how reluctant she was, Zhang Can’er had to move to Wan Feng’s side. She didn’t dare touch Wan Feng again.
“Um, Miss Wan Feng, thank you for saving me just now. If you hadn’t stopped me, I’m afraid I would have died in the courtyard and turned into one of those man-eating monsters.”
After speaking, Zhang Can’er glanced cautiously at Wan Feng.
But Wan Feng didn’t even turn her head, only giving a sullen “en” in response, and made no other movement afterward.
Zhang Can’er stared at her for a long while before turning away helplessly and sitting back down on the edge of the bed.
In truth, she was still afraid. Her heart hadn’t relaxed for a single moment. The roars from outside were a constant reminder that everything she was seeing was not a dream, but reality—a cruel reality.
Zhang Can’er sat on the bed with her knees drawn up, hugging herself tightly with her head buried between them. She wanted to force herself to calm down quickly so she could think about what to do next.
But Wan Feng walked over, her voice still carrying a trace of coldness as she asked, “Where is the food in your house? Where can we get water easily?”
Startled by her voice, Zhang Can’er flinched and looked up at Wan Feng with glistening, teary eyes. Her eyes were classic peach blossom eyes, which usually held a look of tender affection when she looked at people, making it impossible for anyone to get angry with her and only endearing her to them more.
Now, wet with tears, those eyes looked utterly pitiful, as if they still held a trace of affection, evoking compassion in anyone who saw them.
Wan Feng looked coldly at the person on the bed. When she didn’t answer for a long time, Wan Feng walked over impatiently, pulled her into an embrace, and gently patted her back.
Her movements were stiff, as if she were imitating an action she’d seen before. It was clear she wasn’t someone who did this often.
Zhang Can’er froze for a moment and looked up at Wan Feng, who happened to be looking at her at the same time. Their eyes met, and Wan Feng was the first to look away.
“Have you composed yourself? Can you tell me where the food is now? And where can we easily get water?”
Wan Feng stopped her gentle patting but continued to hold the person in her arms lightly.
Zhang Can’er could smell a cool fragrance wafting from Wan Feng. It was very pleasant and strangely reassuring.
Calming her chaotic thoughts, Zhang Can’er replied, “Most of the food is in the small pantry inside the kitchen. As for water, there’s some in the bathroom in the bedroom. It’s not tap water, it’s well water. It’s drinkable, but it has to be boiled first.”
Wan Feng withdrew her hands and nodded. “Let’s leave it at that for today. If you want the latest news, check your phone. You should pay attention while it can still connect to the internet.”
Zhang Can’er’s eyes went blank for a second. She had been so terrified by those things that she was out of her wits and had completely forgotten about her phone.
She quickly got up, grabbed her phone from the nightstand, and saw several text messages as soon as she turned it on.
They were from the Federation. The general message was that the Federation was handling the situation urgently and that they should not panic; the Federation would come to their rescue as soon as possible.
Seeing this message, Zhang Can’er breathed a small sigh of relief. She relaxed a little. As long as the Federation hadn’t abandoned them, there was still hope.
Just then, her phone vibrated. Zhang Can’er saw many private messages on the Star App, all of which seemed to be looking for her.
And in the village group chat, people were frantically tagging her.
Zhang Can’er sent a message.
‘Are you all okay?’
‘Can Can! You finally messaged. If you hadn’t, we would have thought you…’
‘Now’s not the time for that. Since Can Can can message, it means she’s okay. Can Can, can we come to your place?’
‘Yeah, yeah, Can Can, let us come to your place. Yours is the only brick-and-tile house in the village. Many of our mud houses have been torn apart by those monsters. We can only hide underground now.’
‘Can Can, let us come over…’
Zhang Can’er read these messages, her brow furrowing slightly. Among these people were many who had argued with her before. Seeing their pleading tones now didn’t bring her much satisfaction, only the thought that their situation must be dire, or they wouldn’t be begging her for help.
‘I’m okay with you guys coming, but how will you get here?’
‘As long as you agree, that’s great. I told you Can Can was a good kid, beautiful and kind-hearted.’
‘Don’t worry about how we’ll get there. Just take care of yourself.’
‘Who knows what they’re hiding. Can Can, we’ll come from the mountain behind your house tomorrow. Remember to open the back door.’
‘Okay, be careful.’
Zhang Can’er put down her phone and looked toward the window. Her house was built halfway up a mountain. The back door opened onto a small path leading up the mountain. Almost no one ever went that way, so it was a viable route for them to take.
There were a few small paths on the mountain, but those were paths cleared during the Qingming Festival and New Year to go up the mountain and pay respects to her grandparents.
If they were coming from somewhere else, they would probably have to clear a new path. Fortunately, it hadn’t rained in a few days, so the mountain paths should be easier to walk on.
Zhang Can’er’s thoughts returned to the present. She looked out the window. This bedroom was on the second floor. Directly below it on the first floor was the back door. That area was usually used for storing miscellaneous items, as well as things she had dug up from the mountain and vegetables she had picked from the garden.
At this thought, Zhang Can’er’s eyes lit up for a moment. She quickly turned to look at Wan Feng.
“Miss Wan Feng!”
Wan Feng watched the person walking quickly toward her, a hint of confusion in her eyes, though her gaze remained cold.
“Miss Wan, the room below this bedroom is the first-floor storage room. I have sweet potatoes I dug up from the vegetable garden down there!” Zhang Can’er said excitedly to Wan Feng.
But seeing the calmness in Wan Feng’s eyes, she realized she hadn’t told her that people were coming over.
“It’s, it’s like this. I was just on my phone, right? The aunties and uncles begged me to take them in because our house is the only brick-and-tile one in the village, and it’s sturdier than their mud houses. So they want to come here to hide and wait for rescue together.”
Wan Feng stared at her for a moment, her eyes growing even colder. “So you were worried there wouldn’t be enough food, and that’s why you got so excited when you remembered the sweet potatoes?”
“Mhm, I haven’t specifically stockpiled food. I was afraid they’d have nothing to eat when they get here. Those sweet potatoes can at least last us for a while.”
“Do you know the fate of do-gooders? Haven’t you read novels?” Wan Feng said coldly.
“But, but they’re people I know. We’ve lived together in this village for over a decade. I grew up with them watching over me. They’ve helped me a lot. If they’re asking me for help, it must be their last resort. I can’t just watch them die.”
