Chapter 72: I Also Want to Hide You Away
When she opened the door, she saw a woman with a somewhat sturdy build. Her face was cold, and the words she spoke were also cold.
“You two, come with me. We don’t have enough soldiers. We need your help.”
Zhang Can’er had also gotten up and walked to Wan Feng’s side. Hearing the woman’s words, her brow furrowed slightly.
“What’s going on? Why do you need our help?”
The woman was a little impatient, her expression gradually becoming anxious. “What’s with all the nonsense? Hurry up and come with me. You two are the only ones left.”
Seeing that Wan Feng had the intention to make a move, Zhang Can’er quickly said “okay” and grabbed Wan Feng’s hand.
“Hurry up!”
“Okay, right away.”
After the two of them got dressed, they followed the woman.
She went directly to the armory and took out a gun and a knife. She looked at the two of them and asked, “Who of you knows how to use a knife and who knows how to use a gun?”
“I know how to use a knife,” Wan Feng said first.
Zhang Can’er looked at her and also vied for it, “I also know how to use a knife.”
The woman did not give them a choice. She gave the gun to Zhang Can’er and the knife to Wan Feng.
“The one with the gun, go to the city wall. Someone will lead you. The one with the knife, come with me.”
Things happened urgently and quickly, leaving the two of them with little time to react.
It was Wan Feng who thought of something. She said to Zhang Can’er, “Take good care of yourself, understand?”
“Why are you worried about me? You’re clearly in more danger,” Zhang Can’er said, her eyes turning red.
But the woman, seeing that no one was following behind her, immediately walked back and said, “What are you still dawdling for? Hurry up and come over!”
Wan Feng did not delay any longer and followed the woman.
Zhang Can’er stood there for a long time, then went up to the city wall. After she went up, a man led her to a position where she could see the situation below the city wall.
Fighting at night was not friendly to the soldiers at all and might even put them at a disadvantage.
So, large lights were installed on the city wall, which could illuminate the situation below clearly. Below, there was a row of thick combat walls specially built for people.
The walls were very high, but there was no ceiling to cover them. At the bottom of the walls, an opening was cut out according to the standard height of a human body. This opening was the opening for the soldiers to fight.
The first row was shield soldiers, and the several rows behind were infantry. They cooperated with the shield soldiers and took turns fighting.
But there were too many Mutants, and they simply couldn’t be beaten. Although the knives in the hands of the infantry were very sharp, they couldn’t withstand such a long period of slashing. And they had to be constantly on the lookout for whether their companions were scratched, or whether they themselves were scratched.
So, relying solely on the infantry below was definitely not enough. The riflemen on the city wall played a role at this time. They aimed at the injured Mutants, and a few shots would take a head. This would make it much easier for the infantry below.
Zhang Can’er didn’t know how to use a gun. It was a girl next to her who taught her how to use it.
The gun was just an ordinary rifle, but its power was very great. Zhang Can’er didn’t know about these things. Her knowledge of guns was limited to the game pictures she had seen on her phone.
She tried firing a few shots and found it easy to get the hang of. She learned to raise the gun and aim like the person next to her. She didn’t expect to actually kill one. This feeling was indescribable. Was it excitement? Zhang Can’er didn’t know.
There were also several rows of people standing on the city wall. After the front row had finished their bullets, they would automatically go to the back to reload. This cycle repeated, and Zhang Can’er quickly adapted.
This battle lasted until the sky was slightly bright. The remaining Mutants were all cleared away, but the soldiers did not let their guard down. Everyone stood in place and waited.
It was not until the bell rang and the soldiers on the day shift arrived that the soldiers who had fought a bloody battle at night finally relaxed.
Zhang Can’er followed the crowd down the city wall and stood by the city gate, waiting for Wan Feng.
Wan Feng walked over, covered in blood. Next to her was Zhang Wan, also covered in bloodstains, red, green, and black. Both of their faces showed signs of fatigue.
After seeing Zhang Can’er, Wan Feng quickly walked over. She didn’t dare to get too close, just looked at her from not far away and asked, “How is it? Are you tired?”
“Don’t ask me. you must be more tired than me,” Zhang Can’er couldn’t help but shed some tears, but she also knew that the two of them couldn’t hug now.
Wan Feng’s heart ached. She turned to look at Zhang Wan and asked, “Where is the cleaning place?”
“I’ll take you there.”
Wan Feng nodded, looked at Zhang Can’er, and said, “Wait for me here for a while. I’ll be right back.”
“Okay,” Zhang Can’er wiped her tears, trying not to let them fall.
But her tearful appearance had attracted the attention of many people. A group of women who had just come out of the bath walked toward her.
And at this moment, Zhang Can’er was surrounded by several men. Those men’s greedy gazes were sizing her up.
Zhang Can’er was about to make a move, but the group of women suddenly walked over quickly and, without a word, beat those men until they were looking for their teeth on the ground.
“Man Chunhua! Are you looking to die?!”
The leading man was extremely angry, but his face was bruised and swollen, and his speech was a bit slurred, so his presence was weakened a bit.
Man Chunhua sneered with disdain, “You want me to die? You probably don’t know my methods!”
One of the men walked to their leader with some fear. “Boss, Man Chunhua has some friendship with Zhang Wan. Let’s not provoke her. I heard… I heard that she once kicked a man’s family jewels like a ball! And nothing happened. Boss, we can’t afford to provoke this person.”
Hearing this, the man’s face darkened. He gave Man Chunhua a hateful look, turned, and left with his men.
Man Chunhua sneered coldly, turned to look at Zhang Can’er, and said in a frivolous tone, “Young lady, why are you crying so sadly? Do you want your big sister to give you a good hug?”
“Man Chunhua, do you have nothing to do?” Zhang Wan had just walked over with Wan Feng when she heard Man Chunhua’s words and was instantly angry.
Man Chunhua’s smile was a bit awkward, as if she had been caught red-handed. She didn’t know where this feeling came from.
“Oh, it was just a joke. Look, we didn’t even make a move.”
With that, she walked to Zhang Wan with a smile and said coquettishly, “Sister Wan, why are you so fierce? Really, I’m your person.”
As she spoke, she also hugged Zhang Wan’s waist and lay on her body like she had no bones.
Zhang Wan did not react to this. She did not push her away, nor did she show any expression. She just quietly watched her perform.
Wan Feng walked to Zhang Can’er’s side and asked with concern, “They didn’t do anything to you, did they?”
Zhang Can’er shook her head and threw herself into Wan Feng’s arms. The strong, cool fragrance rushed to her nose, which made her feel much better.
Then she whispered the story of what had just happened.
“Can’er, I really want to hide you away,” Wan Feng didn’t know how to describe her current mood. Since they had entered Starshine City, they had been harassed multiple times because of their looks. She sighed, not knowing how many more of these disgusting people they would meet in the future.
“I also want to hide you away,” Zhang Can’er said in a muffled voice. She was really annoyed with this kind of thing. It was like this before the apocalypse, and it was like this after the apocalypse. Was her face really that beautiful? But when she looked at Wan Feng, she felt that her face had at least done one good thing.
