Chapter 16: Heartbeat
Ye Qizhen’s heartbeat suddenly sped up a little. When Wen Yu said this, her face moved closer, wearing a wanton and beautiful smile. As she leaned in, Ye Qizhen could even smell the faint fragrance on her.
Wen Yu didn’t pull away immediately. Instead, she gazed at Ye Qizhen for a few moments longer, looking closely from her lips to her eyes. She was truly curious—why did Ye Qizhen always like staring at her?
Being stared at by Wen Yu like this, Ye Qizhen felt her breathing quicken. She tried hard to maintain her composure, but a thought solidified in her mind: the person in front of her was a bona fide vixen. She was so skilled even with girls, able to stare someone into shyness effortlessly.
At this moment, Wen Yu’s eyes curved into a smile. She continued to tease Ye Qizhen, her voice even softer now, “Ye Qizhen, your skin is so thin.”
It was fine before, but hearing Wen Yu add this sentence in such a soft voice, Ye Qizhen’s cheeks really did heat up. She was visibly flustered. Frowning as she looked at Wen Yu, she opened her mouth but didn’t know what to say, so she could only smile helplessly. As she smiled, the furrow between her brows deepened, and she reached out to press on her lower abdomen again.
Seeing Ye Qizhen didn’t look well, Wen Yu stopped teasing. “What’s wrong, feeling unwell?”
“Period.” Ye Qizhen looked up at Wen Yu. Actually, she had been in pain the whole time, but seeing that Wen Yu also seemed to be in a bad mood, she hadn’t mentioned it and endured silently.
“And you’re still sitting on the ground? Get up, quickly.” Wen Yu immediately stood up, reached out a hand towards Ye Qizhen, and urged, “Hurry up.”
Ye Qizhen stared blankly at Wen Yu’s hand for a moment, then reached out her own hand to let her pull. Borrowing some strength, Ye Qizhen got up easily, but the movement made the pain more pronounced, and she sucked in a breath of cold air.
“Very painful?” Wen Yu supported her to stand steady.
“It’s okay, not too bad.” Ye Qizhen was used to answering like this.
“Hurting like this and you say it’s okay?” Wen Yu saw through her.
Ye Qizhen thought for a moment, then boldly said to Wen Yu, “Then ask me again.”
Wen Yu looked puzzled, but after laughing, she cooperated with Ye Qizhen. “Is it very painful?”
“Mn—” Ye Qizhen’s voice was aggrieved and soft this time. After answering, she pursed her lips and smiled in embarrassment herself. It seemed like the first time she had acted coquettishly; she hadn’t even done this with Tang Tang. She didn’t know what was wrong with her tonight.
Wen Yu was amused by this version of Ye Qizhen—a bit childish, but cute.
“I’m hurting here, and you’re laughing so happily.” Ye Qizhen discovered that Wen Yu seemed to particularly enjoy seeing her embarrass herself, just like how Wen Yu laughed happily every time she cried.
I guess this counts as making her happy, right?
Wen Yu indeed wanted to laugh seeing Ye Qizhen look aggrieved and hurt; the contrast with her usual self was too great. If she hadn’t seen it with her own eyes, she couldn’t have imagined Ye Qizhen was like this in private.
“Do you want to take some painkillers?” Wen Yu saw her condition wasn’t good.
“I have some in my dorm,” Ye Qizhen said.
“I’ll walk you back.”
“You’re not going to continue running?” Ye Qizhen judged from Wen Yu’s state that she probably hadn’t been running for long.
“Not running anymore, let’s go.”
Ye Qizhen didn’t refuse. This was the second time Wen Yu walked her back to the dorm. The asphalt road leading to the dormitory was shrouded in dim yellow light, elongating their shadows.
They walked for a dozen meters.
“Wen Yu.”
“Mn.” Wen Yu responded softly. She inexplicably liked hearing Ye Qizhen call her name.
“When do you usually go running at the playground?” Ye Qizhen asked.
“Why ask?” Wen Yu asked knowingly.
“Didn’t you say last time you’d take me along?”
“Didn’t you say you didn’t want to?” Wen Yu remembered the reluctant look on Ye Qizhen’s face last time, showing zero interest.
“Don’t want to fail the course.” Ye Qizhen looked at Wen Yu eagerly. “Can I?”
With that look in her eyes, Wen Yu believed that if Ye Qizhen acted coquettishly with anyone, no one could refuse her. “I don’t have a schedule, it depends on my mood.”
Ye Qizhen’s eyes dimmed, thinking this was Wen Yu’s way of politely refusing. But the next moment, she heard Wen Yu say lightly beside her, “When you want to run, tell me.”
“Just take me along when you run.” A smile bloomed on Ye Qizhen’s face.
Wen Yu saw her bright smile. “Not hurting anymore?”
Ye Qizhen deliberately put on a straight face. “Do you have to remind me?”
The corners of Wen Yu’s lips lifted. She didn’t answer immediately, but slowed her pace. After a few steps, she said softly, “Walk slower.”
Ye Qizhen secretly glanced at Wen Yu’s profile, feeling warmed again. She had lied just now; changing her mind about running wasn’t because she was afraid of failing, but because she liked the feeling of being with Wen Yu. She couldn’t explain why herself.
Soon they arrived at the dormitory.
Wen Yu: “Can you go up by yourself?”
“Yes.” Given her impoliteness last time, Ye Qizhen specifically said to Wen Yu this time: “Want to come to my dorm for a visit? I’ll introduce my roommates to you.”
“No thanks,” Wen Yu simply said. “You go up.”
“Mn.” Ye Qizhen could tell she wasn’t interested.
After seeing Ye Qizhen back, Wen Yu also returned to her dorm. There should be no one in the dorm; Qi Yun was probably off being ambiguous with her ambiguous partner again, and the other two roommates—one had a boyfriend, the other lived nearby—often didn’t stay in the dorm.
Walking to the dorm door, the light was on inside.
Maybe Qi Yun was back.
Wen Yu didn’t knock but used her key to open the door herself. She didn’t like troubling others, for big or small matters.
But as soon as she opened the door—
There was not only Qi Yun in the room but also another girl with long black hair reaching almost to her waist. The girl had Qi Yun pinned against the corner of the desk, one arm propped on the desk, the other arm around Qi Yun’s waist, pressing against her and kissing her incessantly.
Qi Yun had both arms hooked around the girl’s neck, her lips busy responding with equal fervor.
Seeing this scene, Wen Yu very calmly turned her head to the side.
Someone came in. Qi Yun stopped immediately, her face flushing red. The girl kissing her blushed even harder and whispered very quietly, “I’m leaving.”
When the girl passed by Wen Yu, she didn’t look at her.
She even closed the door on her way out.
Wen Yu acted as if nothing had happened. Without looking at Qi Yun, she unhurriedly poured herself a glass of water. Although Qi Yun usually talked a big game, being caught in such a situation was awkward and embarrassing. She admired Wen Yu even more, thinking, As expected of someone who has seen the world, completely unfazed.
After composing herself, Qi Yun feigned calmness and asked with a smile, “Do you walk without sound?”
“Don’t do this in the dorm in the future, you’re not the only one living here.” Wen Yu didn’t think her footsteps were too light; obviously, the people in the room were too immersed, extraordinarily immersed.
“It was too sudden, I didn’t react in time either. There won’t be a next time.”
Wen Yu raised an eyebrow, recalling Qi Yun’s solemn vow not to date. “Didn’t you say you wouldn’t date? Changed your mind?” She actually thought it was a good thing Qi Yun changed her mind; her previous mindset was too pathological.
Speaking of this, Qi Yun was distressed. “I didn’t want it to be like this either. I didn’t know she was so direct. She looks so well-behaved, like she doesn’t know anything, but turns out she’s smoother than me. I really never thought it would turn out like this.”
“I saw you kissing quite happily just now.” Wen Yu always saw things clearly. Although Qi Yun talked like a player, she wasn’t the type to mess around. If she didn’t have feelings, she absolutely wouldn’t do something like kissing.
“…” Qi Yun was speechless. She admitted she liked that girl. She had always been good to her but never crossed the line. Who knew the other party would kiss her directly tonight? She was stunned. But since she had feelings, once they kissed, it was inevitably hard to resist.
“If you like her, date her. It’s no big deal,” Wen Yu said with her head down.
Qi Yun remained silent, her heart a bit chaotic.
Wen Yu sat at her desk, organizing her notes from the day’s classes using photos. While scrolling through her album, she accidentally saw the photo she took of Ye Qizhen. She looked at it for a couple of seconds… then suddenly remembered to ask Qi Yun, “How did you discover you liked girls?”
“Why do you ask?” Qi Yun tilted her head to look at Wen Yu. Wen Yu had never cared about her romantic history, let alone actively brought up this topic.
Wen Yu kept her head down copying notes, her tone as indifferent as always: “Just asking.”
Qi Yun naturally wouldn’t miss an opportunity to chatter. “Back in middle school, I realized I only liked interacting with girls and would have good feelings towards girls, then I realized it.”
“Good feelings are proof enough?” Wen Yu casually chimed in.
Qi Yun added, “Of course, not ordinary good feelings. You’d think a girl’s lips are soft and want to kiss them. And also, you know, the things men and women usually do… I’d want to do that with girls too… get it?”
Wen Yu glanced at Qi Yun.
“Don’t worry, I absolutely don’t have those kinds of thoughts about you, not even a tiny bit,” Qi Yun hurriedly explained. “I’m not interested in straight girls or players.”
***
Another boring day.
The last two classes were Ideological and Moral Cultivation, even more boring.
Near the end of class, Wen Yu looked at her phone out of boredom again. No WeChat messages. She wondered if she should ask Ye Qizhen to go running tonight. Her period might not be over yet. Better forget it.
Qi Yun lay on the desk. Seeing Wen Yu frequently checking her phone as if waiting for a message, she whispered, “Got a partner?”
Sure enough, she didn’t get an answer from Wen Yu. Qi Yun thought, if Wen Yu hadn’t helped her back then, she probably wouldn’t have intersected with Wen Yu. She was beautiful, but her temper was too bad—prickly.
After class, Qi Yun asked Wen Yu if she wanted to eat together. Wen Yu refused, saying she was going straight to the art studio. Qi Yun began to doubt the authenticity of Wen Yu’s supposed boyfriends. For someone like Wen Yu who spent all year soaking in the art studio, where would she find the time to date?
Wen Yu didn’t eat dinner. Eating only when hungry was her principle. Sometimes she would be so hungry her stomach hurt before she remembered she should eat something.
“Wen Yu, do you want something to eat? I have cake here.”
“Thanks, no need, I’m afraid of getting fat.” Wen Yu answered mechanically, as if she had set an auto-reply. She didn’t even turn her head to look at the person. She hated being hit on the most when she was painting.
Tang Xiao was chilled by this attitude. “You’re already so thin, and you’re still dieting?”
Wen Yu stood up then and glanced at Tang Xiao. Someone was here, it wasn’t quiet. She decided to go to the library.
Tang Xiao was frustrated. He hadn’t even struck up a conversation yet, and she was already leaving. It seemed the department goddess was really slow to warm up, not someone an average person could chase. But he just happened to like girls with this kind of temperament—so much personality.
He wasn’t one to give up easily.
He felt he could still fight for it.
Ye Qizhen didn’t expect Tang Xiao to have the nerve to come begging her. Now when she saw Tang Xiao’s calls, she wanted to hang up directly. Because Tang Xiao hadn’t contacted her recently for anything other than chasing Wen Yu.
After leaving the Arts Building, Wen Yu realized she forgot her notebook. When she returned to the art studio, she ran into Tang Xiao making a phone call.
“…Just help me ask her out… Last time you took her away, that doesn’t count. This is really the last time. Just help me again, ask her out, okay? Absolutely the last time, I promise.” Tang Xiao begged bitterly into the phone, his voice filling the entire studio.
Wen Yu paused in place for a long time. After Tang Xiao finished the call, she walked into the studio coldly, took her notebook, and left without saying a word. Her attitude was even colder than before.
She walked towards the library.
Before she reached the library, her phone’s WeChat chimed.
She opened the chat interface with Ye Qizhen, her mood complicated for a moment…
[y]: Do you have time tomorrow night? Want to go running together?
