Chapter 15: Probing
When Wen Yu received the WeChat message, she had already changed into her sportswear in the dorm. She ran at least five times a week, sometimes in the morning, sometimes at night, but mostly at night. She was prone to insomnia, and sweating a little from exercise made sleeping at night slightly more comfortable.
She casually clicked open the notification.
The message was from Ye Qizhen.
[y]: Are you running tonight?
Staring at this message, Wen Yu delayed replying for a long time. Afterward, she directly turned off the phone screen, put the phone back on the desk, and didn’t plan to reply. She just suddenly wasn’t in the mood.
Her temper had always been like this; she wouldn’t do things she didn’t want to do.
After casually tying up her hair in front of the mirror.
Only then did she leave the dorm.
The weather had improved, and there were more people night running on the playground.
After Ye Qizhen sent the WeChat message to Wen Yu, she checked her phone frequently. More than ten minutes passed, but she didn’t receive a reply.
Maybe she’s busy and didn’t see it.
It was getting really chilly. Ye Qizhen hunched her back, pressing her left hand on her lower abdomen and rubbing it. She thought that going back and drinking some ginger tea might make her feel better. After curling up limply for a while, just as she looked up preparing to get up, she surprisingly saw Wen Yu walking towards her.
Actually, when Wen Yu ran her first lap, she had spotted Ye Qizhen by the stands. She had just finished two and a half laps now; her body was just starting to warm up, not yet sweating.
Ye Qizhen didn’t get up anymore, remaining seated where she was. She looked at Wen Yu listlessly, forced a smile, and said, “You came to run? I even sent you a WeChat message asking.”
She guessed Wen Yu didn’t bring her phone when running.
That was why she didn’t reply.
Wen Yu saw through Ye Qizhen’s wrong state at a glance. Just like last time, she was staying in this corner alone again. She took a step forward and sat down quietly beside Ye Qizhen.
Ye Qizhen looked at Wen Yu. She looked good even in the simplest black and white sportswear; she had looked very good in her school uniform back in high school too. Wen Yu usually didn’t talk much, but now she spoke even less than usual. Ye Qizhen noticed this, turned her body slightly, and asked Wen Yu in a small voice, “In a bad mood again today?”
“No.” Wen Yu smiled faintly, her expression unreadable between her brows. When she met Ye Qizhen’s gaze, she subconsciously stared into Ye Qizhen’s eyes for a moment and asked, “What are you doing here?”
“Getting some fresh air.” Ye Qizhen said with a light, airy smile. Seeing that Wen Yu seemed to have some low pressure like her, she didn’t want to pass her negative emotions to Wen Yu again.
“Fresh air or secretly crying?” Wen Yu seamlessly picked up Ye Qizhen’s words, hitting the nail on the head. “Bullied by someone again?”
“What do you mean ‘again’,” Ye Qizhen was unconvinced and questioned Wen Yu, “Do I look like I’m easily bullied?”
Wen Yu stared at her quietly, then nodded confidently and calmly. “Mn.”
Ye Qizhen couldn’t help laughing, revealing a row of white teeth. The magnetic field between people was really elusive. Perhaps because Wen Yu knew her truest side, she didn’t need to disguise anything in front of Wen Yu; she was very relaxed and comfortable. occasionally being teased by Wen Yu felt interesting too. She didn’t even know what she was laughing at right now, just looking at Wen Yu and giggling foolishly.
When people with infectious smiles laughed, it made others want to laugh along with them. Just like Ye Qizhen—warm and sweet. Wen Yu complained internally: No wonder every time Xu Kaiming looks at Ye Qizhen, his eyes practically go straight. If one had such a girlfriend, indeed, one couldn’t look enough.
She must be in a bad mood. Ye Qizhen was quite sensitive and clearly sensed the difference in Wen Yu from usual. But she asked just now, and Wen Yu wouldn’t say, probably didn’t want to say.
Just accompany her silently.
Better than being alone.
“Why are you alone?” Wen Yu spoke again. Her gaze swept leisurely across Ye Qizhen’s fair face, her tone light and fast when she spoke. “Your boyfriend didn’t come to keep you company?”
That day Qi Yun said Xu Kaiming was Ye Qizhen’s boyfriend, she just thought it was nonsense. Later at the club meeting, she saw Ye Qizhen with Xu Kaiming again, the two inseparable, looking like it might be true.
Ye Qizhen confirmed it in her mind. Wen Yu said “boyfriend.” She was bewildered. “I don’t have a boyfriend…” She quickly realized, Is Wen Yu talking about Xu Kaiming?
“You mean Xu Kaiming? He’s not my boyfriend, you misunderstood.”
Ye Qizhen cleared it up in a few sentences.
Wen Yu crossed her arms, paused, and asked again, “You guys aren’t together yet?”
This wasn’t a question of when they would be together. Ye Qizhen explained more clearly: “What ‘together’? He and I are just ordinary friends.”
Wen Yu said indifferently, “Don’t you like him? I see you’re quite happy when you’re with him.”
“No way, I don’t like him.” Ye Qizhen replied. She didn’t understand why Wen Yu said that. Wasn’t it just bumping into each other once in the cafeteria? Where did she get the idea that she liked Xu Kaiming?
Wen Yu’s eyes kept watching Ye Qizhen’s reaction. Obviously, Ye Qizhen wasn’t lying. She threw out another question: “He’s chasing you recently?”
The conversation opened up on this topic.
This time Ye Qizhen didn’t deny it. She played with her fingertips, and after hesitating for a while, she took the initiative to tell Wen Yu about tonight’s events. “He just confessed to me.”
Want to chat with someone.
She wouldn’t casually talk about these things with others, but she didn’t mind telling Wen Yu.
“Didn’t accept him?” Wen Yu guessed.
“If I don’t like him, how can I accept?” Ye Qizhen pursed her lips slightly, looking a bit aggrieved.
Seeing her like this, Wen Yu suddenly smiled. “Isn’t he quite nice? Why don’t you like him?”
“No feelings.” Ye Qizhen said simply and freely, sighing in her heart again, half a helplessness hidden in her smile. Xu Kaiming was the best among the boys who had pursued her; she had thought her heart would flutter this time.
There were no clouds tonight, and many stars hung in the night sky, twinkling. Ye Qizhen looked up seriously, her mood much calmer now.
Wen Yu quietly gazed at Ye Qizhen’s profile. Her features were exquisite and small, her lip color light, and her lips looked particularly soft… She couldn’t help thinking of how Ye Qizhen would dodge shyly every time she got close. “Have you ever met a boy you had feelings for?”
She believed there were definitely not few boys chasing Ye Qizhen. Ye Qizhen was beautiful and had a sunny personality. Ye Qizhen was different from her; many people would genuinely like a girl like this.
Ye Qizhen turned her head, finding that Wen Yu seemed to have exceptionally many questions tonight. She shook her head very honestly; there really had never been one.
“Then what type of boys do you like?” Wen Yu became increasingly curious.
This question again. Tang Tang had asked her long ago. This question was simply in her blind spot of knowledge; she had no clue. And after trying to interact with Xu Kaiming this time, she clearly realized that she didn’t like interacting with any boys, even to the point of repulsion.
She looked at Wen Yu, unable to answer a single word for a long time. Should I tell Wen Yu that I’m starting to suspect I like girls?
That would scare her.
The wind ruffled the hair on her forehead. Wen Yu met Ye Qizhen’s ambiguous gaze. The corners of her lips curled up, her tone brisk like a joke, but when she lowered her eyes, her intonation was very gentle. “Why are you staring at me? Do you like my type?”
