Chapter 68: Tavern in Guanzhong
Rushing all the way to Lanfeng Town at the foot of Blue Wind Mountain, it was already late. Xue Mu could feel the red horse was a bit tired. She and Diwu Miaofu parked their horses under a tavern. As they entered the tavern, a strong smell of mutton hit them. Diwu Miaofu sniffed intoxicatedly and grabbed a waiter. “Serve me the best dishes in your tavern, especially mutton. It must be freshly slaughtered, understand?!”
The waiter said yes repeatedly. Xue Mu followed Diwu Miaofu to the second floor and chose a table with a view of the scenery outside the window.
“Has Sister Diwu been to Guanzhong before?” Xue Mu asked.
Diwu Miaofu had already started drinking a cup of fine wine. Hearing this, she shook her head. “I tried Guanzhong dishes in restaurants in Jiangnan, but I always felt they weren’t very delicious. Definitely not as authentic as local restaurants in Guanzhong.”
Xue Mu looked out from the tavern window and could see the towering Blue Wind Mountain on the other side of the town.
Her mother had told her that the rocks of Blue Wind Mountain were mainly dark blue, mixed with limestone. Whenever the scorching sun shone, the entire Blue Wind Mountain looked like a huge blue gemstone. There were green pine forests halfway up the mountain, where countless squirrels lived. Several waterfalls cascaded down from the mountains, the sound of splashing water echoing continuously in the valley. Blue Wind Mountain was a very good choice for cultivating the mind and concentrating on practice.
Now at night, there were faint lights on the mountain. Xue Mu gazed quietly at the high mountain shrouded in night, thinking: Master practiced here when she was young.
“Guests, please enjoy~”
The tavern waiter walked slowly with a tray, an attentive smile on his face. The tray held plates of food with complete color, aroma, and taste: Braised Chicken was golden and translucent, with rich sauce, and a few slices of scallions sprinkled on the chicken, looking very beautiful; Strip Meat was sliced thinly, rich in fat, and the meat was tender; Crispy Pork was also served, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, with a special sauce, appetizing; Steamed Pork with Rice Flour was meat chunks wrapped in glutinous rice flour, steamed soft and rotten, the aroma of meat and rice blending and filling the mouth.
Xue Mu tasted a little of everything, while Diwu Miaofu had already started eating voraciously. Then the waiter served Mutton Soup with Bread. Xue Mu felt the soup was too hot and ate slowly, while Diwu Miaofu opposite seemed not to feel the heat on her tongue. When Xue Mu looked up again, she saw she had already finished the remaining soup, licking her lips with unsatisfied desire.
“Sister Xue, eat slowly. There are more dishes coming!”
Xue Mu said nothing, just smiled.
The waiter came up again and placed a bowl of Braised Pork with Preserved Vegetables in front of the two. The pork belly was red and bright, and the salty aroma of preserved vegetables was also memorable. Four Joy Meatballs symbolized fortune, prosperity, longevity, and happiness. The meat filling was tender, with chopped mushrooms inside. Xue Mu personally didn’t like mushrooms very much, so she stopped eating after one. The remaining three meatballs were all eaten cleanly by Diwu Miaofu.
Xue Mu preferred the Eight Treasure Sweet Rice. Longan, red dates, and other fruits and candied fruits matched with crystal clear, sweet, and sticky rice grains; it was truly a beautiful dish. Eating the red bean paste in the sweet rice, she looked up and saw Diwu Miaofu grabbing a pork elbow and gnawing on the meat. She thought to herself: This Diwu Miaofu is young, but her appetite is not small. I am often told by my parents that I have a big appetite, but compared to this Diwu Miaofu, it’s nothing.
After eating for nearly an hour, Diwu Miaofu finished the remaining wine, leaned against the wall drowsily, and gave a big yawn. “Sister Xue, shall we go up Blue Wind Mountain tomorrow?”
“Naturally. You are so full you can’t walk; I’m afraid you won’t have the strength to climb the mountain.” Xue Mu sighed with a smile, handed the gold ingot symbolizing “righteous wealth” to the waiter, and asked for two guest rooms. The waiter’s eyes went straight seeing the gold ingot, and he ran downstairs hurriedly to arrange it.
Diwu Miaofu slept against the wall for a while, then suddenly woke up with a start, muttering to herself, “Wind and sand rise, a lonely shadow walks. Camel bells ring, the night is not yet bright…” Hearing this, Xue Mu felt her accent was different again, not like someone from the Jiangnan region, with a strange rising and falling tone. This was a bit like the strange accent of people from the Western Regions trying to speak the Central Plains dialect after coming to the Central Plains.
Diwu Miaofu mumbled a few sentences in a daze, her eyes widening round. She stared blankly at Xue Mu for a moment, her gaze gradually clearing, then suddenly realized, “Ah, it’s Sister Xue! Are we going back to rest?”
Xue Mu said, “Yes, I asked for two guest rooms, one for you and one for me. After paying for this meal with that gold ingot, there is still a lot of silver left. Go back to rest quickly. After resting well, we will go up Blue Wind Mountain tomorrow.”
Diwu Miaofu laughed. “We will kill our way up Blue Wind Mountain, fight our way up Blue Wind Mountain, and scold our way up Blue Wind Mountain!”
Xue Mu didn’t respond. Glancing at the completely cleaned plates, she pulled Diwu Miaofu up and took her upstairs to the guest room to rest. Unexpectedly, Diwu Miaofu was full of energy. She broke free from her hand directly, used her lightness skill to fly up to the third floor, turned around, and waved to Xue Mu with a smile. “Sister Xue, why are you still walking so seriously? Fly up directly!”
“Sister Diwu, my skill is not as deep as yours.” Xue Mu smiled slightly.
“What deep skill or not? Anyway, I learned three-legged cat kung fu (amateurish kung fu) from other chivalrous big brothers and sisters of the Jianghu.” Diwu Miaofu wondered, “Does Sister Xue not even have this little lightness skill? Come up quickly!”
Xue Mu pondered silently, thinking that this girl had no parents since childhood and mixed in the Jianghu. Who knew what expert taught her lightness skills and mental cultivation methods? Her skill was clearly very deep, yet she still thought she learned three-legged cat kung fu. If those people in the Jianghu who couldn’t practice high-level martial arts knew, they would definitely vomit blood endlessly.
She still walked up step by step. Seeing Diwu Miaofu spinning and dancing somewhat crazily on the spot, she couldn’t help urging, “Sister Diwu, go rest quickly. We really have to get up early tomorrow to go to Blue Wind Mountain, lest those disciples come down the mountain for something.”
Although Diwu Miaofu drank a lot, her mind wasn’t muddled. “Those Taoists? What does it matter to you if they come down the mountain or not? You just need to go to the top of the mountain to find the Sect Leader! Besides, wouldn’t it be better if those disciples came down? Wouldn’t it be easier for us to break in?”
Xue Mu said, “Yes, yes, Sister, go into the room and rest quickly. I’m going to sleep early too.”
Diwu Miaofu suddenly pulled a long face, pitifully tugging at the tattered cloth strips on her body. “Sister Xue, can I rest with you?”
Xue Mu was stunned, shaking her head to refuse. “I already have a family. Sister Diwu, my wife is still waiting for me at home. I absolutely cannot do anything to let her down.”
Diwu Miaofu was also stunned. “I didn’t say I wanted you to let her down… Wow, you actually have a wife! Then I absolutely cannot live in the same room with you!”
Xue Mu said, “Yes, my wife is jealous.” Mentioning Yuan’er, she felt much more peaceful and sweet in her heart. She wondered if Yuan’er had already discovered she left Hanfeng Town. Maybe she would be angry with her, but there was no choice. She had to go up Blue Wind Mountain once so as not to leave herself with regrets.
Xue Mu arrived outside her guest room door. Diwu Miaofu revealed a subtle smile, leaned close to her, and whispered, “Sister Xue, were you also scared away by a woman?”
