Chapter 84: Mutation
After Shu Yao suggested leaving the abyss and returning to land, she actually began to plan her future life on the spot.
Just like that, sitting in Lin Ran’s embrace, she listed her plans in a lighthearted tone:
“Humans will probably choose to shatter the moon, this satellite, first, to weaken the influence of the [Lighthouse]. After that, they should be able to hold on for a while.”
“If you like to live in the sea, we can travel in the four oceans like before. Whenever we get tired of it, we can go ashore for a breath of fresh air, or to replenish some daily necessities.”
“Anyway, in this small space of yours, the time we spend will be much slower than outside. When we really have nothing to do, we can consider ending this vacation. It’s not bad for me to continue to find a job and work casually…”
The picture she described was really leisurely and beautiful.
As if she had entered retirement life in advance.
Lin Ran looked at her with gentle eyes, and was almost moved—
It was at the moment when the little octopus’s heart was moved.
Her eyesight, which was superior to that of an ordinary person, immediately noticed that under the warm light, under Shu Yao’s light-colored long hair scattered on her shoulders, the texture of the skin on her dark neck seemed to have changed for a moment.
It was as if a round, eye-like pattern had appeared.
She reacted extremely quickly and raised her palm, covering the other’s warm and delicate neck.
Shu Yao trembled all over, and for a moment she forgot what she was going to say. Her words stopped for a few seconds, and only then did she feel puzzled by her huge reaction to being touched. She rubbed her neck against Lin Ran’s palm and asked curiously:
“What’s wrong?”
“Is there hair on it?”
Noticing that her girlfriend’s deep black eyes were staring intently at that patch of her skin, Shu Yao thought she had accidentally gotten something on it.
Although she said she would trouble the other to take it off for her, her body was more pleased with the approach of that cool temperature. She subconsciously used the skin of her neck to affectionately want to get closer to her.
…
Lin Ran withdrew her palm as if she had been burned.
Her eyelashes also trembled lightly.
When she realized that that patch of Shu Yao’s skin seemed to have suddenly developed a will of its own, and had even started to breathe when it touched her palm, puffing up slightly, and actively touching her, Lin Ran knew for the first time what the feeling of “being frightened” was.
The blood flowing from her heart seemed to slowly freeze, and freeze.
Although she had seen so many [Parasites] of various forms before, she could always evaluate these mutations from the perspective of a gourmet, and the new flavors they could bring her, and even looked forward to their further mutations.
Until now.
Such a change had happened to Shu Yao.
Her mind was a blank. Even her main body, which had temporarily retreated into that darkness and was lurking, had stopped its actions in an instant. The entire octopus seemed to have been frozen in its actions, completely dazed.
Why?
Everything was fine before. How could a physical mutation appear so quickly?
Was it because she had used too much of her abilities when she was looking at the aurora before?
The beautiful woman in her mimicked form even stopped breathing for a moment.
Her deep black eyes did not blink. On the surface, she seemed calm and deep, but her heart was already in a panic. She didn’t know what to do to make Shu Yao return to her original state.
Until Shu Yao noticed that she had been quiet for too long.
She couldn’t help but raise her hand, wanting to touch the patch of skin she had just touched. “What’s wrong? You haven’t spoken for so long—”
Her wrist was suddenly grabbed by Lin Ran.
“I didn’t notice just now,” the person who was still holding her, her tone had become gentle again. When she smiled at Shu Yao, the corners of her eyes also curved into a crescent shape. “Maybe when you were sleeping, I was holding you and didn’t pay much attention, and my nail scratched your neck, and it broke the skin a little.”
Shu Yao: “Mmm?”
She chuckled, felt it herself, and didn’t feel any pain around her neck.
“What’s this?” she said. “Such a small wound, and you’re so nervous about it. It will heal in two seconds, right?”
But Lin Ran did not let go of her wrist.
She looked at her girlfriend again with a solemn expression and said, “I’m very concerned. How about I find a band-aid for you?”
Shu Yao: “…”
She rarely felt so helpless.
She was so annoyed by Lin Ran’s making a big fuss over nothing that she forgot the strangeness she had just noticed.
In the end, she could only go along with her. “As long as you like it.”
…
Not long after, a shiny, bright yellow SpongeBob band-aid appeared on Shu Yao’s neck. The bright and cute color, because it was the same as the color the little pet had previously disguised itself as, made her look at it in the bathroom mirror for a long time.
Lin Ran held her from behind, her palm on her waist through her clothes.
She had just, with the excuse that the seawater environment of the abyss was too cold, and she was afraid that her main body would stay here for too long and let the outside temperature be transmitted in, insisted on helping her girlfriend change into long-sleeved home clothes.
This way, she could reduce the direct contact between the two of them as much as possible.
Lin Ran no longer wanted to touch that strange skin on her skin, which seemed to breathe and seemed to be about to grow its own consciousness at any moment.
And now, she gently pressed her chin on the very edge of Shu Yao’s shoulder blade and asked her, “Is it cute?”
“Cute.”
Shu Yao raised an eyebrow, her gaze forward, meeting her in the mirror, and she drew out her tone, as if she were coaxing a noisy puppy at home. “The band-aid is cute, the little octopus that is the same color as the band-aid is cute, and the girlfriend who put the band-aid on me is the cutest—”
Lin Ran showed a smile at her direct praise.
The reason she had prepared happened to be said at this time. “I think your proposal just now is not bad. But while you were sleeping, my main body went to the area outside this darkness and saw that the [Lighthouse] has summoned many [Martyrs].”
“They’re a bit of a nuisance. I’m afraid we can’t leave easily for a while. The plan to travel to the sea again, my girlfriend may have to wait.”
When she spoke, she even controlled her breath, her rhythm of pausing, and every muscle on her face with great precision.
As precise as the emotional presentation in a psychology textbook.
Only her main body, which was surrounded by darkness, on the ruins that no one could see, was dazed and guilty, with its tentacles curled at its side.
I’m sorry.
She said so in her heart, I lied to you again, Yaoyao.
Lin Ran became a little anxious.
She left that darkness and unscrupulously advanced in the outer lands, and even invaded the edge of the Eternity, trying to find some clues from those [Martyrs] that could help Shu Yao recover.
She chewed their bones and ate their uninteresting memories—
But there was nothing.
Nothing useful at all.
They were just zombies created by the [Lighthouse] on a production line.
And so she fixed her gaze on the center of the Eternity, that eternally bright, seemingly unquenchable existence.
Instinct told Lin Ran that with her current abilities, it was absolutely impossible to pose a threat to the [Lighthouse], but this was the only way.
Bang!
A sound of something falling to the ground suddenly came from the bathroom.
Lin Ran was suddenly startled. She shifted her attention, and the tentacle that had mimicked a human and was left in the space immediately walked toward the bathroom.
Because her girlfriend had just said that the water temperature in the bathtub seemed a little low, and anyway, she couldn’t help with anything now, so in order not to waste the tub of water that had been prepared in advance, she might as well go and soak in it.
Before she went in, Lin Ran had repeatedly reminded her not to get the band-aid wet.
Even though that bright yellow band-aid was originally waterproof.
…
“I’m fine. Don’t come in.”
When she saw her figure appear in front of the door, Shu Yao urgently raised her voice.
The other person had already put her hand on the doorknob, but stopped because of her sentence.
Shu Yao supported herself on the edge of the countertop with one hand and looked down at the vortex-shaped change that had appeared on the back of her left hand.
A moment later.
As if she had sensed something, she looked up at the mirror in front of her, turned her head, and slowly peeled off the bright yellow band-aid from the edge of her skin—
As expected.
Underneath was the same mark.
She was stunned for a long time, then pulled at the corner of her lips, feeling a little expected.
She had been so focused on taking the little octopus away from the abyss, but had forgotten that she had been approached by Lin Ran’s purer, more original power, and had touched the memories in that darkness. Of course, she would be more deeply polluted by her power.
The mental mutation was indeed limited.
In the end, it would still affect this ordinary and common human body.
Shu Yao looked down at the vortex pattern on the back of her hand again. After a long time, she felt that it was a bit like the suckers of an ordinary octopus, so she couldn’t help but start to guess:
Is the end of her mutation to become another octopus?
It doesn’t seem so bad.
This way, she can be with Lin Ran. Although her suckers are not as special as her heart shape.
She thought to herself for a while, and only then did she belatedly pick up a towel and start to wipe the water from her body after she had gotten out of the bathtub.
By the time Shu Yao came out of the bathroom, there was another band-aid mark on the back of her hand, and she even waved it in front of her girlfriend, who was waiting at the door.
“I soaked in the hot water for too long just now. Maybe I was a little dizzy. I accidentally knocked over the scissors that had been placed on the countertop after I had trimmed the flowers before.”
“It’s okay. It just poked a very small hole.”
She explained to herself.
But Lin Ran stared at the new band-aid on the back of her hand and couldn’t say anything for a moment.
She knew.
Shu Yao had found out.
She also understood.
Shu Yao had seen her ‘lie,’ and was even now comforting her in the same way.
And then, as Shu Yao walked toward her, wanting to take her hand as she had before, Lin Ran very abruptly took a big step back, avoiding her action.
Letting her outstretched palm fall into mid-air.
Shu Yao seemed a little helpless.
Her light-colored pupils deliberately showed a hint of sadness. It was just after she had taken a bath, and her hair was still damp with mist. Now, that dampness seemed to be about to fill her eyes.
“Are you not going to hold me anymore in the future?” she asked.
The answer was a very light sound of a water droplet hitting the ceramic tile.
…
Lin Ran cried.
It should be that her main body’s emotions were too sad at this moment. After all, she was originally an emotional, sentimental little octopus.
The tears that flowed from her main body would always be carried away by the seawater flowing through the abyss, so only Shu Yao, who could see her at this moment with her mimicked tentacle in this unique space, could see her like this.
Her usually gentle, deep, focused, and affectionate eyes, which were like obsidian, were now misty.
When Shu Yao saw her like this, she immediately thought of the helpless and hesitant little octopus when the mermaid had died, when Flower Hat had died.
She was so sad.
She said with helplessness and extreme self-blame, “I’m sorry, Yaoyao.”
“I’m sorry. It’s all my fault.”
“It’s all my fault.”
Poor lin ran, she was ready to fight the lighthouse just to help her gf while Yaoyao was thinking “eh I’m probably okay with this”
Why is everything sad now 😭😭😭
This is semi resolution, why it gotta be so sad?
