Chapter 15: Building Blocks
The night outside the window was beautiful, and the room was filled with a sweet, light incense.
The glass cabinet that had once displayed items of the Sacred Cult had been completely emptied. New dresses filled the wardrobe to the brim, and unopened toys were piled on the cashmere carpet.
From small mechanical frogs to a five-meter-long kite, roly-poly toys, 3D puzzles, nutcrackers, and more…
There was everything one could wish for.
The cream-white bed curtains softened the candlelight. Lina was sitting cross-legged on the bed, playing with building blocks.
She was very seriously constructing her “block tower,” her blue eyes filled with a childlike romance and innocence.
Adele sat opposite her, holding a block in her hand, but her mind was not on the toy itself.
Ever since returning from the Oakwood Market that night, she had collected many toys to bring home.
Because she had discovered that the little rabbit had never played with any of them.
Lina’s childhood was filled with violence. A girl who had not yet had her first period should have been playing carefree with her peers. Even adults might not be able to accept the content of the Sacred Cult, yet she had to face it day and night.
In such a dark childhood, the naturally sensitive lop-eared rabbit couldn’t even find a rag doll for comfort.
Adele couldn’t imagine how Lina had spent so many pitch-black nights, curled up alone in her quilt…
The little rabbit was clearly so timid. How scared must she have been?
Adele’s gaze fell on Lina for the third time, uncontrollably. She looked at those sparkling eyes, and what flashed before her own was a glaring despair.
She had come too late.
Really too late.
If she had transmigrated into the book earlier, perhaps Lina wouldn’t have suffered so much, wouldn’t have been excited for half a day just because she got a set of building blocks…
Adele looked at Lina, a hint of pity in her eyes.
All outward emotions are the parts that cannot be suppressed.
She unconsciously turned the block in her hand, trying to suppress the sour bubbles churning in her heart. In doing so, she accidentally knocked over the blocks she had stacked.
“Haha.” Lina covered her eyes with her two ears and said in an obedient voice, “I didn’t see anything.”
Adele was infected by her mood. The sadness in her eyes had not yet faded, but the corners of her lips curved up first.
Following Lina’s lead, she said dotingly, “In that case, may I ask Miss Lina to draw a tiny little turtle? My face is about to run out of space.”
Adele’s “block tower” had already collapsed three times before. According to the rules of the game, the loser had to have a turtle drawn on them by the other person.
And it had to be drawn on the face.
Lina moved one ear aside. The moment her gaze met Adele’s face, she couldn’t help but laugh.
Three little turtles were neatly arranged on the originally stern face.
Even though Adele’s features were sharp and her aura distant, at this moment, she looked quite comical.
When Lina looked into her eyes, Adele had just managed to retract all her negative emotions, leaving only a pure, gentle smile for her.
Worry, pain, confusion…
The little wolf intended to bear all of this alone.
If possible, she hoped the lop-eared rabbit could always be happy.
“Of course.” The first time Lina drew a turtle, she was still very apprehensive. After all, such an act felt like an offense.
But after offending her several times, she grew bolder.
After all, Adele had always been indulging her.
Always.
Lina even had the illusion that if she went a little further, her teacher wouldn’t get angry…
Is that right?
If I went a little further…
Lina froze in place, the hand holding the pen trembling.
Adele didn’t know what she was thinking and asked softly, “What’s wrong?”
“Ah!”
Two words were written all over Lina’s face—
Guilty.
She came back to her senses and, with a bright red face, moved closer. Her fluffed-up tail was a size larger than usual. The golden fur looked very nice to knead.
“N-nothing! I’m going to start drawing now.”
“Mhm.” Adele turned her face slightly, offering up the blank space.
The cold tip of the pen landed on her cheek. Adele had no time to feel its slow movement because she once again smelled the unique fragrance of the lop-eared rabbit.
Her appetite was stirred again. Adele just wanted to go to the confessional and hang herself.
Why am I so greedy?
Adele closed her eyes and, just before her thoughts could go astray, silently clenched her canine teeth.
Beneath the tip of the pen was a tensed jaw muscle. Lina’s movement paused slightly. She raised her eyes and only then realized that Adele had closed her eyes.
Why is she clenching her teeth?
Her first reaction was that she was enduring something.
Because it was the same during the time she applied the medicine—
She would frown slightly, her face showing an expression of being unable to bear it.
That time it was the pain of the wound. This time, perhaps the tip of the pen was too cold.
But how to explain the faint blush under her eyelids?
Lina’s curiosity was piqued. She took the initiative to move closer. She wanted to be closer so she could see more clearly.
A warm breath suddenly approached. Adele’s eyes snapped open.
Their eyes met. Lina instinctively flinched, then moved closer again after a moment.
Excessive self-suppression will definitely have its consequences.
Adele felt like she was being punished by God. Her already fragile self-control was facing an unprecedented challenge.
It had always been her looking down on Lina. Now, she was the one looking up.
She was not used to it.
The candle was about to burn out. The flickering flame grew dimmer. The night seeped into the bed curtains, and the fragrance blurred her vision. Adele’s gaze shifted downward, but her pupils had already lost focus.
She stared at Lina’s lips.
Like staring at prey.
Their breaths mingled. A chaotic heartbeat replaced pale words.
“Teacher…”
Lina was the first to speak, then paused.
Does Teacher want to kiss me?
Lina’s tail trembled. Mustering her courage, she said in a small voice, “I’m willing.”
The taut string in Adele’s mind vibrated on the verge of snapping. Her breathing grew heavy. After a long moment of deliberation, she couldn’t utter a single word.
Lina clutched the corner of her clothes.
She had never done it before. The first time is always a little nerve-wracking.
But this small movement was caught by Adele’s peripheral vision.
!
Reason instantly returned. Adele leaned back, completely pulling away from the dangerous and ambiguous distance.
Until it was no longer possible.
“That’s not what I meant.” Adele’s voice was hoarse and raspy. The seven words, once out, only served to make things more obvious.
She thought Lina was scared, thought Lina’s compliance was just to please her. A thick wave of guilt instantly washed over her.
The little rabbit saw her as a teacher, but she was thinking…
She was the biggest scumbag in the world!
Lina didn’t respond. Two question marks formed above her head with her ears.
If it didn’t mean a kiss, then what did it mean?
She could feel Adele’s avoidance at that moment.
Does Teacher… dislike me getting close?
A sharp pain pierced Lina’s heart, as if half of it had been carved away with a knife.
She reached out a finger and tremblingly poked Adele’s arm, saying in a small voice, “I’m sorry, Teacher… If you don’t like me getting close, I’ll never…”
Before she could finish, she was pulled into Adele’s arms and given a light swat.
“If you let your imagination run wild again, I’ll have to hit you hard.”
Lina didn’t feel any pain. Her small face was burning red. The heart that had just been empty was instantly filled again. She hung her head and said, “I know, I’ll change.”
There was a hint of coquettishness in her tone.
Adele was completely helpless against her.
Too close was not good, but too far was even worse. She could only coax her like this, not too close, not too far.
Holding her in an ambiguous embrace.
In the second before the candle burned out, the two shadows within the bed curtains lay down, embracing.
Then held each other even tighter.
Outside the window lattice, an entirely black magpie silently watched everything that was happening in the room.
Its blood-red eyes were turning strangely.
*
The next morning, in a half-dreaming, half-awake state, Lina saw someone standing by her bed.
Even though she had been in a safe environment, the fears hidden deep within her would still gush out when her spirit was weak.
Lina woke up abruptly. She curled up in the quilt and timidly lifted her eyelids.
Fortunately, the person standing by the bed was Adele.
“Teacher…” Lina took the initiative to sit up. She wanted to say more, but a hand suddenly gripped her neck.
“Ugh!”
“Still sleeping?” Adele’s eyes were sinister. “I’ve been waiting for you in the classroom for a long time. I’ve prepared a lot of fun things for you. Don’t disappoint me.”
Lina’s eyes were filled with terror.
Adele’s gaze had become exactly the same as those who had hurt her.
What’s going on!?
Lina tried to find a flaw in the person before her.
Maybe they just look the same…
Maybe…
No, even the voice was the same.
“Teacher… did I do something wrong…” Lina’s breathing was labored, and tears streamed down her face from being choked. She carefully held Adele’s wrist and begged, “Please, please don’t hate me… I can change anything…”
“No.” Adele sneered twice and threw her to the floor. “I just want to hit you. I can’t wait any longer. I don’t want to play any more redemption games with you, understand?”
Her arm hit the hard, cold floor. Lina trembled all over in pain. She looked at the ferocious and terrifying Adele before her, her mind constantly replaying her teacher’s promises.
“Lina, I will never hurt you.”
“Lina, my heart aches for you…”
“Lina, don’t kneel.”
Lina’s breathing was rapid. Amidst these admonitions, she managed to calm down.
No, the person in front of me is more like the imposter from the hallway.
Lina looked at her wrist.
No bracelet!
Adele had clearly promised her that she would always wear the seashell bracelet they bought at the Oakwood Market!
“You…” Lina scooted backward and said, “You’re not Teacher!”
“You’re not my teacher!”
“You found out.” The imposter raised her foot, preparing to kick her. “That’s right, I’m not. Go on, let your teacher come and save you…”
“Help!”
