Chapter 16: Haunted
“Lina?”
Adele startled awake from a light sleep. Her eyes weren’t even open yet, but her hand had already found Lina’s head.
Her palm was quickly dampened with cold sweat. Realizing something was wrong, she immediately moved closer. “Lina! Wake up!”
“N-no… please…”
Whimpers escaped Lina’s throat uncontrollably. Her brow was furrowed, her lips colorless, as if she were experiencing something extremely painful.
Adele couldn’t wake her by calling her name, so she had to resort to a light push.
Lina twitched slightly a few times, then her eyes snapped open.
Adele’s face magnified before her, and magnified again.
The person who had just been beating her was now looking at her with concern, her eyes filled with pity.
It was too jarring.
They were the exact same features. One was horrifying, the other was alluring.
Lina’s vision doubled. Two Adeles appeared at the same time.
Sinister and gentle intertwined. She felt as if she had been abducted into Satan’s lair, unable to distinguish between pain and pleasure. In a mad descent, she actually felt a sliver of delight.
“Retch—”
Lina shoved Adele away and leaned over the side of the bed, dry heaving.
She couldn’t bring anything up, but she did cough up a mouthful of blood first.
The taste of blood filled her mouth. She felt as if she had been plunged into an ice cellar.
Help…
The young woman’s thin, delicate silhouette trembled unceasingly amidst faint sobs.
Adele, who had been pushed away, didn’t dare to move, didn’t dare to speak, didn’t even dare to breathe.
She was so afraid that she was the source of Lina’s fear.
So afraid that she wished she could just hide away immediately.
Adele curled up in a corner, trying to minimize her presence.
In the blink of an eye, Lina suddenly turned her head.
In just a few moments, her aura had changed completely. A fierce hostility surged in her bloodshot eyes.
Her face was pale. Like a female ghost, she crawled closer to Adele, questioning her, “Have you ever had improper thoughts about me?”
It was the very picture of a soul-chasing ghost.
“N-no!” Adele immediately denied, trying to hide her wavering gaze by shaking her head.
Her heart was filled with guilt. She didn’t dare to look Lina in the eye.
“Is that so?”
Lina knelt up straight, her eyes fixed on Adele.
Adele turned her face to the cold wall and lied, “Really, no.”
Lina, with blood at the corner of her lips, crawled forward on her knees. “I haven’t even said what kind of improper thoughts, and you’re already denying it?”
That was a dead giveaway.
Lina pressed on. “If your conscience is clear, why don’t you dare to look at me?”
Adele scooted back a step, her eyes squeezed shut. “Don’t be like this.”
“Teacher, I haven’t even done anything yet.”
The more she avoided, the more it invited scrutiny. Lina quickened her pace.
She fled, and she pursued.
Soon, Lina had cornered Adele.
“Teacher, look at me.”
“If your conscience is clear, you should open your eyes.”
“I think you’re just guilty!”
…
Lina grabbed Adele’s two knees, trying to straighten out the curled-up figure.
“Lina, you’re acting up with me again, aren’t you.” Adele finally opened her eyes. Even in this situation, she couldn’t bring herself to yell at her. “Let go.”
There was no fear on Lina’s face. Her two ears formed a large “X” on top of her head.
Acting up?
A beauty’s anger, just inches away.
The teacher who was usually as cold as frost, noble and self-possessed, was now at a loss, forcing a calm demeanor, so flustered that the corners of her eyes were red.
Who could resist acting up?
Lina pushed her luck. “Then I was wrong. Deal with me.”
Adele closed her eyes again. She only wished she knew how to chant a mind-clearing mantra. The celestial beings of the East could no longer save her. If a divine decree could save a soul who had fallen for a damsel in distress, she would willingly burn the Bible to ashes and drink it with water every day.
Unfortunately, God couldn’t hear the prayers in a church, let alone the ones within a bed curtain.
“What are you so afraid of?” Lina was relentless. “What are you avoiding?”
Adele’s breathing grew heavy. She didn’t dare to push Lina away. Amidst the repeated questioning, she felt as if she were back in that confessional.
“Stop messing around… I’m begging you… I really don’t want to commit a crime…”
“Your face is so red,” Lina said, impervious to her pleas.
“…”
Adele said stubbornly, “I’m red with anger!”
Lina didn’t respond. Instead, she touched the buttons of her own pajamas and, word by word, said with full temptation, “Teacher, I will make you be completely honest!”
“No!”
Adele covered her eyes with her hands.
A few seconds later—
The imagined event did not happen. Nothing went out of control.
Adele opened her eyes, bewildered. Lina hadn’t come close at all. She was still lying by the side of the bed.
Everything that had just happened was like a short dream.
But all the sensations had been so real. Even the fragrance of the lop-eared rabbit still lingered at the tip of her nose.
What’s going on?
Is this place haunted?
【Did you guys… see that just now?】
【That instructor was talking to the air, but the little rabbit didn’t react…】
【It seems like that rabbit ball can’t hear what’s happening behind her.】
【Look at that grandfather clock. The rabbit coughed up blood at exactly three in the morning. Now the minute hand has only gone around once.】
【It was definitely more than a minute. That instructor talked for at least five minutes!】
【Help—】
【I’m too scared to watch anymore. What’s going on?】
Lina had no time to pay attention to the comments. It took her a long while to recover from the feeling of coughing up blood.
“Teacher…”
Lina turned her head. Covered in cold sweat, her eyes filled with tears, she looked at Adele and said in a small voice, “Teacher, are you my teacher?”
Adele answered with a question of her own. “Are you Lina?”
Lina was stunned for a moment, then nodded obediently. “I am…”
She held up her left hand, showing the bracelet they had bought at the Oakwood Market.
Seeing her action, Adele immediately nodded. “I-I have one too!”
She also showed her own seashell bracelet.
The two of them gazed at each other, and in each other’s terrified eyes, they began to understand.
What on earth had just happened?
Lina took the initiative to move closer to Adele. Before she could even ask for a hug, she was pulled directly into her arms.
Adele’s hug tonight exposed the panic in her heart.
She was practically strangling the little rabbit.
Lina faced her, burying her face in her chest.
The feeling of being squeezed brought back a sliver of security. “Tighter…”
Adele did as she was told.
The two of them held each other tightly in silence.
In the latter half of the night, as the world grew quiet, the withered branches outside the window swayed with the gentle breeze, like menacing phantoms.
At this moment, the room was like a deserted island forgotten by the world.
“It’s okay…” Adele’s voice was hoarse and raspy. “It’s okay, you have me… Don’t be afraid, it will all pass. I’ll find a way to solve it.”
In truth, she had no way.
She didn’t even have a single clue.
But she had to step up.
The successive absurd events had left Adele looking weary, but she still patiently coaxed Lina.
“Everything will be alright…”
Lina looked listless. She heard the chaotic heartbeat in Adele’s chest and understood that her teacher was also afraid.
Lina knew this was not the time to back down. She rested her head on Adele and slowly recounted everything that had happened in her dream.
Adele only listened for a few sentences before interrupting her. “Don’t say any more… and don’t think about it again. The me in your dream must be an imposter.”
“I know that wasn’t the real you. Teacher wouldn’t hurt me. I remember it all.”
Adele rubbed her head.
Lina’s cold body gradually warmed up, and her thoughts became clearer. She asked, “Then did you run into trouble too?”
Adele wanted to say something, but her lips moved for a moment before closing tightly again.
How could she say it?
Say that Lina had seduced her?
Or say that she had no self-control?
Neither was appropriate.
“I saw another you. So fierce, she came at me wanting to beat me up.” Adele told a lie. “I was almost beaten into a pulp by you.”
Lina looked up, incredulous. “I… how could I?”
She paused, then added, “I wouldn’t hurt Teacher either.”
Adele gave a “Mhm.”
She would not allow herself to overstep. The chase in the illusion could be said to be beyond her control. Now, there were no more excuses.
She would never lay a hand on a damsel in distress.
“Lina…”
What am I to do with you?
Adele murmured in a low voice.
Morality would not allow her to cross the line.
It was so painful.
The real and fake Adeles, the real and fake Linas, Herte’s surveillance, Huaguang’s attitude…
All of these things were wearing down Adele’s spirit.
She lowered her head, wanting to gently stroke Lina’s cheek with her fingertips, to seek a moment of comfort, but she stopped just before she could touch her.
Forget it.
Once is enough to lead to a second time.
She didn’t dare to indulge herself any further, but the bewildered Lina had already taken hold of her fingers.
“Teacher, your hand is so cold.” Lina wrapped her hand in her ears, warming her with the softest fur. “Let me warm it up for you.”
Adele was stunned at first, then mocked herself internally.
It’s over.
It seems Lina really is an irresistible temptation for me.
She wanted to go to the bathroom again.
The two of them hugged for a long time, only separating after they had both relaxed.
The moon had become a thin sliver. The night was gradually receding, and the distant sky was already turning a fish-belly white.
It was almost dawn.
As her mind relaxed, Lina finally felt the stinging pain in her arm.
She lifted the bed curtain and, by the faint light from outside the window, took a look—
It was a fresh, bloody scratch!
Adele grabbed her arm. “Wasn’t it a dream! How did you get hurt? Are there any other wounds?”
Lina carefully checked her body. “No, just this one.”
“What do you mean, just this one…”
Every hair on Adele’s body stood on end.
Who on earth was hurting her little rabbit ball!
“It’s okay… it doesn’t hurt that much.” Lina felt that the person before her was even more nervous than she was. A twisted sense of pleasure suddenly arose in her.
So, getting hurt makes Teacher care this much…
Then if I keep getting hurt, will Teacher always care about me…
Lina’s tail trembled. She swallowed the indecent thoughts and comforted her, “Teacher, I’m really fine. Anyway, we have the elven ointment. It will be fine after I put some on. Maybe it really is just a ghost.”
Adele’s heart ached, but she was helpless. “This is too terrifying…”
It was like trying to push down one gourd only to have another pop up.
A maid suddenly came to report—
“Lady Adele, Miss Lina, Lady Herlkin has arrived at the manor. She says she is here on behalf of her brother, Mr. Herte, to inspect the results of the instruction during this period.”
Lina: !
Adele: !
The supervisor has arrived!
They’re about to be exposed!
/
“I love her so much, I want to make her my own. But that’s too selfish. I can’t strip her of her freedom for my own selfish desires. I certainly can’t hurt her. I can’t bring myself to do it. What can I do?”
“Adele is really going to drive me to my death.”
“When will she finally put all her attention on me? That’s right, when I’m hurt. I don’t want to take advantage of her kindness, it’s too despicable! But seeing her get so nervous and frantic because of my wounds, it feels so good…”
“Teacher, at least for this moment, all of your attention belongs to me.”
