Chapter 29: Puppy
“I wouldn’t have let you go either.”
The woman’s face changed drastically. Before she could react, Lina grabbed her by the collar.
“When I was ten, I found a kitten in the manor. I didn’t have any toys then. The kitten was my only friend. But you…”
Lina paused, not continuing the memory, and instead asked, “What did you do?”
The woman was instantly plunged into an ice cellar. Many scarlet fragments flashed wildly in her mind.
Lina pressed on, step by step. “What did you do?”
“I didn’t, I didn’t… I didn’t do anything!”
Lina threw her to the ground. “You smashed the kitten to death right in front of me!”
Smashed to death!
The scalding blood seemed to cross time and space, once again splattering on both of them.
But this time, the one who screamed in terror was no longer Lina.
The woman covered her ears and roared, “I didn’t, I didn’t!”
Dilys stood not far away. She had only arrived at the manor last year and knew very little about the past. She only knew that Lina’s situation was not good and that she had been severely abused since childhood. Now, suddenly hearing about the past, besides being shocked, a hint of pity appeared in her eyes as she looked at Lina.
She couldn’t imagine how scared a ten-year-old girl would be to witness such a bloody scene.
However, that smashed kitten was just the tip of the iceberg of her many years of tragic life.
Who wouldn’t resent it?
Who wouldn’t hate it?
Dilys silently clenched her fists.
Lina propped herself up on her knees, her right hand subconsciously resting on her waist. Only people who were often injured or whose old wounds had not yet healed would have such a small gesture.
“You will never have the chance to leave here, and you will certainly never have the chance to sue me. I won’t let you die so quickly either. Living is the real torture! I want you to be like me, with only endless despair every day from now on. I want you to repent to the me of that year in the day-in, day-out torment!”
This was the final judgment.
The woman collapsed completely on the floor.
Lina looked at her dust-covered face, her knuckles swollen and red from overwork, and the wounds from the warden’s beatings. There was not a trace of the pleasure of revenge in her eyes.
She had spoken so decisively, but when she turned her face to the side, another tear rolled down her cheek and shattered on the cold floor.
Lina’s eyes trembled. The feeling of revenge and vindication came with a deeper pain.
Did it feel good?
To trample on her former enemy, to watch her live a life worse than death—of course it felt good!
But as Lina looked at her miserable state, a sense of pity arose in her heart, and even a self-loathing.
An eye for an eye. Now that she had hurt someone, what was the difference between her and the person before her? She hadn’t read many books as a child, but she knew she should be a kind person. From the bottom of her heart, she didn’t want to harm others, especially those of the same sex.
But…
She hated her.
Was she just supposed to take it?
Even if she got her revenge, those painful years could not be erased. Who would compensate her for her childhood, such good times, such a youthful age, who would compensate her!?
Her innate goodness and the hatred of reality pulled her back and forth. Lina’s blood-stained hands trembled slightly. For a moment, she was so choked up she couldn’t speak.
The thought of being good had just emerged when the woman’s curse reawakened the devil in her heart.
“You’re just a worthless life! A life born to be trampled and played with! I curse you to a bad death! You’ll only be more miserable than me! I’ll just wait to see you be burned alive!”
Dilys roared, “Shut your mouth!”
Hatred surged in Lina’s chest. She tilted her head slightly, her face half in light, half in shadow. The tear tracks were hidden in the darkness. A pure killing intent flowed from her slightly bloodshot eyes.
“I’ve already told your warden to take good care of you.”
Lina gave Dilys a look. The latter immediately understood and threw a blood-stained handkerchief in front of the woman.
The handkerchief was unfolded. Wrapped inside were bloody fingernails.
After all, they had been pulled out. It was inevitable that some flesh would remain.
The woman, who had nothing left to lose, was at the end of her rope. When she saw the name on the handkerchief, she screamed in terror.
“Ahhhh—”
The handkerchief belonged to the butler.
If a servant died outside the labor bureau, the employer would be investigated. But if a servant died in the labor bureau, they would just be disposed of quietly.
The woman’s life, from today on, was completely in Lina’s hands. Her life and death were in her hands.
“I won’t let go of anyone who opposes me. From today on, you don’t have to pray for God’s blessing in the morning.” Lina turned around. “Pray that I’m in a good mood.”
Lina turned and left, leaving the screams and curses behind. Even after getting into the carriage, her face was still clouded.
“Worthless life!”
“Bad death!”
“Burned alive!”
Every word stabbed at the points she was most sensitive to, the ones she cared about most. The sharp curses tore her wounds wide open.
Those wounds that had never healed were once again exposed to the sun. The pain instantly reached its peak.
Lina’s breathing was rapid. Violent, extreme thoughts kept emerging.
So painful.
So disgusting.
She wanted to kill someone, wanted to skin them, pull out their tendons, and cut them into a thousand pieces.
She also wanted to kill herself. If she died, it wouldn’t hurt anymore. If she died, she would be free.
Lina’s two hands dug into her knees. Her nails sank into the fabric, pinching her own flesh.
Harder.
And harder.
But the pain from pinching her leg was not enough!
What to do?
What to do!
Lina’s lips were pale. Fine beads of sweat instantly broke out on her forehead. Her whole body trembled uncontrollably.
She then dug into her own forearm, unconsciously scratching back and forth.
The bloody marks were soon broken.
Lina leaned against the carriage. She repeatedly rubbed and pinched the wound that was already bleeding, until blood flowed down, until physiological tears burst from her eyes. Only then did she stop.
Help.
Someone, please save me… save me… it hurts so much.
Lina was in so much pain her brain was deprived of oxygen.
It wasn’t her arm that hurt; it was her heart.
Dilys heard the sobs behind her. She keenly sensed that Lina was not in a good state. She made a decisive decision, cracked the whip, and drove the carriage toward the manor at full speed.
She knew that if Lina was sick, Adele was her medicine.
…
In less than a quarter of an hour, the carriage screeched to a halt at the manor gate.
The moment Dilys opened the carriage door, Lina rushed out.
“Miss!”
Dilys wanted to warn Lina to watch her step and not fall.
But the moment the words left her mouth, Lina had already run out of sight.
Dilys’s eyes were full of worry. Just as she was about to lock the carriage, she caught sight of blood near the seat.
!
The specks of blood clearly looked like they had dripped.
The worry in Dilys’s heart grew a few shades heavier.
Could the young miss be self-harming?
…
Adele stood in front of the wardrobe, looking at the beautiful clothes that filled it, and nodded with satisfaction.
Spring, summer, autumn, winter, all four seasons, all kinds of occasions—she had prepared everything for Lina.
She pulled open a small cabinet and found that there weren’t enough accessories. Just as she was planning to buy some jewelry and necklaces for Lina, the door was pushed open with a “bang,” and the next second—
She was held tightly from behind, her two arms included, confined in this embrace.
The extremely forceful action startled Adele. “Lina?”
“Save me…” The moment Lina spoke, her voice was choked with sobs. But this time, it was not a long-planned performance, but a genuine breakdown. “Save me, please… save me.”
“What happened?!” Hearing the little rabbit’s cries, Adele was instantly on high alert. “Who bullied you?”
Lina pressed her face against the nape of Adele’s neck, greedily breathing in her scent.
The wind blowing from the North Island snowfields was never cold and biting. She had been soaked in pain for too long, but the gentle north wind did not despise her damp soul, only tirelessly, over and over again, drying her, smoothing her fur.
Every one of Adele’s calls was so gentle, every look filled with pity. Only by being close to her could Lina feel her flesh and blood growing.
Adele was an irresistible temptation for her.
The skin on the nape of her neck—she had already caressed it with her eyes countless times.
Not just the nape of her neck.
On every night that Adele was fast asleep, she would quietly get up to observe her. The frequency of her breathing, the number of times her eyelashes trembled—she knew it all clearly. Too much desire broke through the prison called reason at this moment.
Lina didn’t answer Adele’s question, only saying, “Let’s kiss.”
“Adele, kiss me.”
“I don’t want to die yet. Kiss me.”
“Please.”

The afternoon sun shone through the tall, arched French windows, plating the magnificent inner hall with a soft golden light.
The king sat on a velvet sofa, holding the little prince in his arms.
The serious monarch rarely showed a smile. The little prince curiously touched his crown. His large, grape-like eyes blinked twice, and he said in a milky voice, “I like it.”
If it had been anyone else, they would have been beheaded at this moment.
But the little prince’s treatment was completely different.
The king laughed heartily, immediately took off his crown, and said dotingly, “It’s all yours!”
The queen sat next to the king, her loving gaze fixed on the little princess.
The little milk dumpling, who had just learned to walk, wobbled forward on the soft carpet, a wooden sword in her hand, giggling.
The queen’s eyes were gentle. “Our daughter will surely be smart and brave in the future!”
At this moment, the heavy hall door was gently pushed open. Huaguang was followed by two maids holding tributes.
“Father King, Mother Queen.” She stopped a few steps away and said, “These are the new gems presented from the south. Please take a look.”
The king glanced at her. In just a few moments, his smile had mostly faded. He casually looked at the gems for a few moments and said, “Register them in the treasury according to the rules.”
“Yes.” Huaguang felt his distance but still replied respectfully.
The queen didn’t even turn her head. Her hand was still on the little princess’s shoulder. “Thank you for your hard work. You may leave.”
She wasn’t even willing to look at her eldest daughter.
The inner hall was a picture of warmth. A loving father, a gentle mother, a cute little sister, an innocent younger brother—a happy family of four.
And what about Huaguang?
She couldn’t get a word in. Her current situation was not like a grand princess, but more like a foreign minister.
“Yes.”
Her mother’s order to leave—Huaguang heard it clearly. She exited the inner hall and could still hear the laughter inside.
Those intimate and gentle words—she had never experienced them.
Huaguang’s heart was filled with a sourness, but she couldn’t show it on her face.
She couldn’t make a mistake, couldn’t let people see her thoughts, catch a flaw.
Huaguang left the door and walked straight to her own bedchamber. She said nothing, her entire being no different from usual.
But Yuan You knew that she was sad.
The moment Huaguang returned to her bedchamber, she collapsed onto the bed.
Yuan You dismissed all the attendants and, after closing the hall door tightly, cautiously called out to her.
“Your Highness…”
“I know Father is the king. Power is the most important thing to him. I’ve never had any hope for him.” Huaguang gripped the bedding, her voice muffled. “But Mother… she never comforted me when I was little, never.”
Yuan You’s eyes were full of pity.
“I don’t blame her. Without a son, she can’t consolidate her position. Her husband will despise her, and her maternal family will abandon her. I can understand why she doesn’t like me. But I’m also her biological daughter… Her blood flows in my veins too. There shouldn’t be a naked transaction between us! Her situation is not easy. As her daughter, I can’t be too harsh on her. I thought that if I were outstanding enough, became her support, she would love me. But she didn’t…”
Huaguang punched the bedframe. “Am I still not good enough? Why can’t she see my good points! Why!”
Yuan You was so shocked she sucked in a sharp breath. She grabbed Huaguang’s hand. “Your Highness! Don’t hurt yourself!”
Huaguang looked at her, her eyes slowly turning red. “Later, my little brother and little sister were born. I thought she would only love her son, but…”
Huaguang paused.
The happy scene from just now had deeply pierced her heart. She could no longer use the preference for sons over daughters to comfort herself, to numb herself.
“So, she just doesn’t love me…”
Huaguang didn’t roar, didn’t cry her heart out. When she said this, she was even exceptionally calm.
“She just doesn’t love me…”
As noble as Huaguang, with immense power, she still couldn’t get what she wanted.
She had never loved her cold and unfeeling father. Pure hatred wouldn’t make one too painful. Only when hatred was mixed with love and expectation would it make one’s life a living hell.
Yuan You shed tears before her. She took the initiative to hug Huaguang. “Your Highness, I love you.”
Huaguang trembled in her arms. “I thought I wouldn’t feel pain anymore, but…”
But her mother’s cold treatment still suffocated her.
Yuan You held her tightly.
As Huaguang trembled, she asked, “Will you always love me?”
“Until death do us part.”
“Will you only love me?”
“I will.”
Huaguang buried her face in the crook of Yuan You’s neck. “Hold me tighter. I’m so cold.”
Her heart was cold, so her body was also cold.
About half an hour later, Huaguang had recovered slightly.
She would not allow herself to wallow in her emotions.
She still had great things to do.
Huaguang rested her head on Yuan You’s arm. The two of them lay back on the bed together.
“I asked you to keep an eye on Adele. Is there anything new?”
Yuan You gently wiped the tear tracks from her face. “Lina sent the butler and the head maid to the labor bureau.”
Huaguang said, “Her father wants to sacrifice her. It’s simply unheard of. How can he be so cruel to his own daughter…”
She paused at this point.
Her father, the noble King, didn’t he also only have cold calculation for her?
Perhaps because of their similar circumstances, Huaguang naturally developed a hint of a protective desire for Lina, this rabbit sister with whom she had no blood ties.
Yuan You also saw that Huaguang had a heart to get close to and cultivate Lina, and deliberately asked, “Do you want to summon Lina to the palace immediately?”
Huaguang pinched her face. “You’re getting bolder and bolder, daring to guess my thoughts.”
Although she said this, there was no trace of blame in her tone.
Yuan You obediently let Huaguang knead her. “I wasn’t guessing.”
Your Highness, I already know you like the back of my hand.
A hint of an aggressive, wicked intent appeared in her puppy-dog eyes again.
Huaguang smiled, then pecked the corner of her lips and said softly, “I only have you.”
Suddenly being rewarded, Yuan You’s eyes lit up. “I will always be with Your Highness.”
If she were a mixed-blood puppy, a tail would definitely be wagging behind her at this moment.
“Summoning her to the palace alone is too conspicuous. Let’s wait for the Monastery Open Day.” Huaguang straightened Yuan You’s clothes. Under the stand-up collar, on her neck, was a secret that belonged only to the two of them.
Huaguang’s last sentence had been very serious, but the next one changed tone. “Whose are you?”
Yuan You was always so shy. “Your Highness’s…”
“My what?”
The shyer she was, the more it made Huaguang want to be wicked. She pulled at that secret.
“…puppy.”
Huaguang pulled her even closer. “Then I’ll have to check properly if you’re a good puppy.”
“Are you ready?”
“Please, Your Highness, enjoy.”

“Ow—”
“Ow—”
Herlkin was lying on the bed. “I’m crippled. I really can’t move. It hurts so much when I move. Other people’s bottoms are in two halves, but mine has been beaten into five! Five! No fox can bear such pain. I’m so miserable. The human world is too deep. I want to go back to the forest…”
Aomo, who was divining by the window, had her train of thought interrupted again.
She conjured a spiked club out of thin air and walked to the bed. “Still have the strength to yell?”
Herlkin pulled the quilt over her head. “Oh—I’m suddenly so sleepy…”
Although Aomo’s words were merciless, her eyes were full of “resignation.” The little ancestor was too clingy. She had accepted it.
“I’ll open the door. If you yell again, everyone will be able to hear. You can figure it out yourself.”
Herlkin poked her head out, puffed up with anger, but didn’t dare to argue.
Aomo rubbed her fluffy head. “I’ll play with you when I’m done.”
Herlkin curled up in comfort, her tail wagging proudly.
Humans, they still can’t resist the temptation of a little fox.
Footsteps suddenly sounded in the corridor.
“Lina says she’s pregnant. I feel her condition is still not optimistic, so I’ve asked you to come and take another look.”
Adele was walking in front. Haia was half a step behind her, still with that meticulous, cold, and distant appearance.
“Don’t worry. It’s normal for the illness to have relapses. I’ll check her again carefully.”
Herlkin followed the sound and her eyes widened—
Haia! Why is she here too?!
Haia saw both people in the room clearly with her peripheral vision. She didn’t stop and followed Adele away as if nothing had happened.
Teacher, Herlkin, your world for two is over.
…
Lina sat obediently on the bed. The second she saw Adele, her eyes curved in a smile. The next second, when she saw Haia, the smile froze on her face.
Wicked woman! What are you up to again!
“I need a quiet examination environment.” Haia put down her medical bag and said to Adele, “I might need you to step out for a moment.”
“No problem.”
Adele quickly left. Haia walked to the bed. With one glance, she saw the love bite on Lina’s neck.
“You… you succeeded so quickly?”
Lina’s lips were still slightly red at this moment. Her thoughts instantly went back to this afternoon.
“Let’s kiss.”
