Chapter 37: Knight
Adele didn’t come back until the early hours of the morning.
Lina curled up on the narrow single bed, tossing and turning in the rough, damp sheets.
Time passed, second by second. She stared at the mold-stained wall, a suspicion about Adele gradually growing.
What is she doing?
Didn’t she promise to come back and stay with me as soon as possible?
She’s not really going to save other people, is she?
Is she really tired of me?
…
Lina’s brow furrowed tightly. She subconsciously bit her finger.
She trusted Adele’s character, but she still couldn’t control herself.
Deep love breeds deep suspicion. Lina had poured almost all her feelings into this relationship. Any slight disturbance was enough to make her tense up.
A person who already lacked a sense of security was more prone to insecurity.
Lina couldn’t fall asleep for a long time. The words she had overheard echoed in her mind. She closed her eyes and, over and over again, imagined—
Adele, dressed in a platinum-gold long robe, sat on the throne of the Sacred Cult. In her arms were two pale, hollow-eyed young women.
They were all extremely frail. Their exposed arms were covered in blue and purple marks, and their necks were wrapped in bleeding bandages…
The air was filled with the aroma of minnow and vegetable chowder. Adele was holding a bowl, gently feeding a strange girl.
Her gaze was still so hot, so gentle.
“Teacher?”
Lina called out to her. Adele paid her no mind.
“Teacher!”
Lina approached the throne. “It’s me, Lina.”
Adele glanced at her and said, “You’re healed now. I have to take care of others.”
Lina’s legs went weak. She knelt on the floor. “Teacher, I’ve broken the rules. Aren’t you going to punish me?”
The seriously injured girl lay in Adele’s arms, trembling. Adele used the pad of her finger to wipe away her tears, gently stroking her head, and coaxed, “You are my only student. Don’t be afraid, don’t be afraid…”
These words were like a bolt from the blue. Lina froze in place, as if a basin of cold water had been poured over her head.
She’s not her teacher’s student anymore?!
Lina crawled to Adele’s feet and tugged at her sacred robe.
“You really don’t want me anymore?”
Adele’s gaze fell on her, no longer with the gentleness of the past, but only a cold indifference, like examining an object.
She held out a hand. Her cold fingertips fiercely pinched Lina’s chin. “How about I twist this piece of flesh off you? If you’re injured, I’ll take care of you, okay?”
Lina trembled in pain but still stammered, “…Okay.”
She took the initiative to undo her buttons. “Hit me… I get hurt easily. You can break me… I’m willing, just don’t leave me…”
Adele sneered and kicked her away.
“Get lost! I’m not interested in you anymore!”
“No!”
Lina woke up abruptly from the nightmare. She shot up and clutched her chest, taking deep breaths.
What a terrible dream.
In this moment of shock, her peripheral vision caught something unusual on the door.
By the faint light from outside the window, Lina turned her head to look—
It was a pair of eyes!
“Ahhhh!”
Those dark green eyes, with a familiar evil, were staring at her intently, greedily.
It was that imposter again!
A wave of offended anger rushed to her head. Lina flipped out of bed.
“Stop!”
The shadow outside the door quickly disappeared at the end of the corridor. Lina chased after it.
*
A pale white light rolled in the dark clouds, as if about to tear a crack in the sky.
The wind had completely died down. The night was frozen in the courtyard. Aomo stood on the roof of the chapel, overlooking the entire monastery.
Soon, she noticed something was wrong.
The layout of the entire monastery: the east end was slightly wider, the west end was narrower.
Viewed from above, it looked like a giant coffin!
An indescribable chill suddenly climbed up Aomo’s back.
She looked at the ground of the chapel. There was a line of blurry words on the stone slabs—
“…tomb of…”
Aomo’s scalp tingled. She looked further into the distance, and a dense collection of the word “tomb” entered her eyes.
These stones were not ordinary building materials at all, but tombstones!
And what was beneath her feet was not a place of prayer at all, but a carefully arranged, soul-guiding spiritual field!
Piling up the belongings of the dead can gather resentment. This is a typical evil art.
Aomo took out her crystal ball, wanting to further verify her conjecture.
Suddenly, the candlelight flickered, and a fine line appeared on the back of her hand.
Without a continuous infusion of fresh blood, she was starting to age again.
A mortal body simply cannot resist the passage of time.
Aomo’s throat moved. The desire from her soul made her feel as if she had swallowed a thousand red-hot steel needles.
She needed blood.
She needed the blood of a young woman.
The overly strong desire made her breathing quicken.
“…Haia.”
She subconsciously called out this name.
Almost in an instant, half a city away, Haia, who was flipping through medical records in her clinic, felt her heart skip a beat.
She heard someone calling her.
But when she looked up, the doorway was empty.
A sharp pain suddenly shot through her arm. Haia rolled up her sleeve. The place where she had cut herself to let out blood last time had inexplicably split open.
Blood seeped from the wound. Before it could flow down, it was licked away by an invisible force.
Haia: ?
Her brain shut down. She thought she was hallucinating.
But the next second, a pair of hands gently squeezed her arm, followed by a warm breath—
Please, give me a little more blood.
Haia felt Aomo’s desire. Her sucking was greedy. The sweet, cloying smacking sound echoed in the room, making one’s ear tips burn.
Blood rushed out of the wound and was rolled away by a nimble tongue.
…
Haia could no longer distinguish between reality and illusion. She clutched her wound and murmured to the air, “Teacher?”
Aomo suddenly appeared before her. The usually calm and composed person was now completely broken.
“Haia…”
Aomo’s voice was dry and hoarse, with a heart-stopping vulnerability that Haia had never heard before. “…You shouldn’t have let me taste your blood.”
Haia stared at her. Before the word “hate” could come out, her eyes had already turned red. She demanded, “Is my blood not good enough? Or do you prefer Herlkin’s blood?”
Aomo’s eyes were filled with pain. She handed her a bottle of light green potion. “I won’t drink her blood, and I certainly won’t drink yours. You should quickly wash the wound with the potion. It won’t split open next time.”
Haia raised her hand and knocked the potion to the floor. She picked up a shard of glass and, in front of Aomo, cut a deeper, longer gash on her arm.
“I won’t wash away the link. I’m willing to feel the pain.” She deliberately dripped the blood on the floor. “A few more drinks, and you’ll be completely addicted to me, won’t you?”
The full, scalding, scarlet drops of blood completely captivated Aomo’s heart.
Her body trembled violently. Her eyes were fixed on the scarlet on the floor, her pupils burning with a mad desire.
“Do you have to… humiliate me like this?”
Haia’s eyes were red. “Want blood? Kneel on the floor and lick it. If you want to lick my arm, that’s impossible.”
Aomo looked at her. A layer of mist gradually appeared in her eyes. After a long moment, her shoulders slumped, and then her waist began to bend. She lowered her head, and her two knees hit the floor.
Aomo knelt before Haia.
Haia clenched her hands, deeply stung by this scene.
Aomo lowered her head. Just as she was about to lick the blood on the floor, Haia grabbed her arm and pulled her up.
“You!”
Aomo calmly shed two streams of tears. “Are you satisfied?”
Haia shook her head. “I’m not satisfied. I don’t feel sorry for you at all. I just don’t want you to dirty my floor!”
“Then where are you going to drip the blood next?”
Haia took a clean glass bottle and silently dripped the blood into it. After she had filled it, she turned around. Aomo was already gone.
“…”
Haia threw the bottle on the floor. Blood splattered everywhere. She abruptly came to her senses and found that she was still sitting at her desk.
Just now, she had been pulled into an illusion by Aomo.
Remembering what she had done, she slapped herself.
The taste of blood filled her mouth. Haia stared at the potion that had appeared out of nowhere on the table, her hands trembling with anger.
You want to draw a line with me that badly?
Impossible!
Lightning flashed and thunder rumbled outside the window. A strong wind howled.
The cold wind blew into the third floor of the chapel. Aomo curled up on the balcony, letting the cold rain wet her face, washing away the lingering bloodstains on the corners of her lips.
She had never expected that she would lose control to the point of licking blood.
She had sucked a lot.
But she was still not full.
She knew very well that even if she drained Haia dry, it would not be enough…
She was a monster.
Thinking of Haia’s resentful eyes, Aomo hugged her knees, her hands digging into the flesh of her arms.
You deserve it.
Aomo, you deserve it.
*
Lina chased the fake Adele all the way to the top of the bell tower.
“Run.” Lina propped herself up on her knees, panting, and said, “Keep running.”
The imposter was forced to the edge of the platform. Her heels hit the low railing. There was nowhere to retreat.
“It seems your body has recovered quite well.”
“What do you want?”
“Adele has always been an elder of the Sacred Cult. She appeared by your side only because she thought you were pitiful. Her greatest hobby is to save young girls in distress. You’re not the first one she’s saved, and you won’t be the last. When you’re healed, she’ll go and find the next one.”
Lina stared at the face that was exactly the same as Adele’s and asked, “Is what you’re saying true?”
“Of course. She’s just enjoying your worship and dependence. And people with this hobby have a very strong desire for control. Don’t you think she’s occasionally very assertive? Especially after you’ve resisted her.”
Lina approached, step by step. “Your provocation is really pale.”
She said this, but the suspicion in her heart grew a few shades.
Adele always pinched the nape of her neck. Always, when she cried out in pain and wanted to crawl away, she would grab her ankle and pull her back. After they had confirmed their relationship, Adele would always hold her very tightly, as if she wanted to knead her into her body.
Is it possessiveness?
Or a desire for control?
Lina couldn’t tell for a moment.
“I’m not provoking you. I’m just telling you the truth.” The imposter stepped one foot out of the railing and said, “Adele doesn’t love you at all… she doesn’t love you! No one would like someone like you. You’re just a worthless life, you know?”
She knew what Lina cared about the most. She simply retracted her smile, imitated Adele’s expression, and said to her, “Lina, I’ve never loved you. I’ve found a better plaything now. I don’t want you anymore… hahaha…”
“Shut up!” Lina’s voice was shattered by the night wind. She wanted to grab the imposter’s collar, to peel the skin off her face!
But the moment she took a step forward, the imposter spread her arms and fell backward on her own.
Time briefly froze.
And then—
Thud!
No scream.
Only a dull, breath-stopping thud.
The sound of flesh hitting the stone slabs, of flesh and blood splattering, was exceptionally clear in the dead of night, short and heavy.
Lina froze in place, her hands still suspended in the air. Her fingertips were cold, her mind a blank. Only that dull impact echoed repeatedly in her skull.
Did she kill someone again?
No.
She didn’t push her…
Lina couldn’t help but tremble violently. She walked to the edge of the platform, step by step, and looked down.
Blood.
So much blood.
But the one lying in the pool of blood was not the imposter, but the nun she had choked that evening.
?
Lina only felt the world spin before her.
She even began to doubt herself.
Did she really do it just now?
Who was she really facing just now?
She turned around, staggering, and with one glance, she met the figure standing at the top of the stairs.
It was Adele.
She stood in the thick shadows. There was no longer any pity in her gaze, only shock and disappointment.
The cold gaze was a hundred times more biting than the night wind at this height. Just like in the dream, it was so cold it was heartbreaking.
Teacher saw the whole process of her crime!?
No.
She didn’t kill anyone!
But Teacher’s angle couldn’t see the truth!
The blood in Lina’s body froze. She opened her mouth, wanting to explain, but couldn’t make a sound.
The entire world seemed to be collapsing before her eyes.
It’s over.
It’s completely over.

“She was the first person to teach me not to belittle myself. If she knew that for a long time, my wish was to be her dog, what would she think? Would she think I’m a lost cause? Or would she be so scared she’d run away overnight?”
“She’s too good to me. I know someone will comfort me, will catch me when I fall, will love me. In the past, when I encountered sad things, I would grit my teeth and endure. But now, with just a small thing, I feel so wronged I want to cry, want to have my head patted, to be held tightly. I just want to curl up by her side, to be her little puppy.”
“Looking back now, I finally truly taste my feelings for her. I was young then. Besides love, I didn’t feel much more. Actually, there was also a little bit of hatred. I hated that she couldn’t belong to me one hundred percent, so I would always go crazy, become unreasonable. Fortunately, she loved me. Unconditional tolerance, reasonless pity, and uncalculated favoritism—she gave them all to me.”
“I want to be her dog. Maybe I really do have a bit of a masochistic tendency. Maybe in my heart, she has always been like a deity who has descended to the mortal world. Maybe I want to feel a strong possession from the rough treatment. Maybe I want to completely become her property. Maybe I’m crazy.”
“I just want her to be good to me. I just want her to pity me. I can become any appearance she likes. If she really likes to save pitiful people in distress, I can guarantee that I will always have wounds on my body.”
“She really provoked a madman. I won’t hurt her body, and I certainly won’t force her. But I can’t give her freedom anymore. This is the price of her running away. When I catch her and bring her back, I will also force her to f*ck me.”
“Want freedom? Then f*ck me to death.”
Love me forever.
Only love me.
