Chapter 58

“Oh, where is it awesome? Tell me.”

Miao Bai rarely said such things, so Meng Bai deliberately looked up at her to confirm.

As a result, their gazes met, and Meng Bai discovered that Miao Bai was actually smiling.

Did she have to smile like that? She was really so charming.

“Ah, how am I supposed to praise you…” Meng Bai suddenly felt at a loss.

“If you can’t praise me, it means it’s just empty flattery.” Miao Bai restrained her smile. “It means it’s not sincere.”

She said it on purpose.

“It’s not that I can’t praise you; it’s just that you’re too amazing, and I don’t know where to start.”

Meng Bai’s voice grew smaller and smaller, laced with a hint of shyness.

Miao Bai laughed at her. “Praise me slowly. We have plenty of time, and I’m listening.”

She seemed intent on hearing a few compliments before letting it go.

This made Meng Bai feel very embarrassed, yet she obediently complied and said:

“I just think it’s cool that you can make me invisible, and the way you stayed completely calm when Baldhead was hallucinating is cool, and when Zhang Gou was so scared he was shitting and pissing himself while you smirked coldly—that’s cool too.”

Meng Bai had a rich vocabulary, but when it came to Miao Bai, it all boiled down to two words: “very cool.”

Sure enough, Miao Bai burst out laughing upon hearing this.

Meng Bai grew even more embarrassed. “Don’t laugh at me.”

Miao Bai let out an even clearer chuckle from her nose.

“Sigh, then I won’t say anymore, and you’re still laughing at me.”

Miao Bai’s eyes and brows were full of amusement. “Oh, I thought you were done praising me? Turns out you’re not finished yet?”

“You’re teasing me on purpose!” Meng Bai pinched Miao Bai’s wrist and looked up at her. “Is teasing me fun?”

Miao Bai blinked, her eyes brimming with gentleness. “It is.”

In that instant, Meng Bai felt like her heart had been gently squeezed—warm and toasty.

How strange; she even felt a willing sweetness about it, perfectly content to be teased by Miao Bai. It gave her a sense of joy in return, like if you tease me, I’m happy too.

Meng Bai looked away.

Miao Bai had looked so beautiful when she was smiling just now!

The two walked slowly along the road, the evening breeze slightly cool. Meng Bai suddenly loved the scent of autumn so much—perhaps her nose had become more sensitive because of Miao Bai’s presence.

“Miao Bai.”

“I’m here.”

“I’ll miss you.”

Meng Bai suddenly said this out of nowhere, leaving its meaning unclear.

They were holding hands, and Meng Bai clearly felt Miao Bai’s body stiffen for a moment.

“What do you mean you’ll miss me? Why say something like that all of a sudden?”

Meng Bai chuckled. “Nothing, really. I just get like this sometimes—weirdly sentimental.”

The wind picked up, bringing the cool refreshment of an autumn night.

The hair on their foreheads was blown into disarray.

Suddenly, Meng Bai felt her heart filled to the brim. She loved every single moment spent with Miao Bai far too much.

“Don’t you have those kinds of feelings at all?” Meng Bai stopped walking and looked at Miao Bai very seriously. “For mortals like us.”

She enunciated each word clearly. Even though “mortals” sounded a bit comical, Miao Bai’s emotions were still under her control.

“No.” Miao Bai sighed softly. “I do have them, but I think I shouldn’t, and I also find them boring.”

“Oh, so falling in love or developing feelings for someone is boring to you.”

“Yes.” Miao Bai answered almost instantly, causing Meng Bai’s mood to plummet. She instantly felt downcast.

She felt like Miao Bai was a block of cold, hard stone.

Yes, too cold—the kind that couldn’t be warmed no matter how much you tried.

Meng Bai let go of her hand and didn’t hold it again. She had no mood to say anything else and changed the subject. “Tomorrow when I go to school, I’ll give the video to Teacher Xu.”

“Okay.”

“It’s so cold; let’s walk faster.” Meng Bai quickened her pace.

Rather than saying it was actually cold, it was more like Meng Bai wanted to escape.

She felt that Miao Bai had absolutely no interest in that sort of thing.

But her own intentions were becoming increasingly obvious.

She couldn’t help wanting to get closer to Miao Bai—even while holding hands earlier, she’d had the urge to draw even nearer.

Miao Bai definitely wouldn’t like it.

Of course, Miao Bai would feel troubled.

She didn’t want Miao Bai to think she was clingy and annoying. If Miao Bai had no other intentions, then she needed to carefully restrain her own desires.

That’s what Meng Bai thought.

So when Miao Bai walked her to the doorstep, she didn’t propose they sleep together like she usually did.

It was the first time she hadn’t taken the initiative.

“Then I’ll head home.” Meng Bai had one hand already reaching for the door.

Miao Bai looked at her with a rather strange expression.

Meng Bai: “What’s wrong?”

Miao Bai: “Nothing.”

Meng Bai: “Then I’ll head home.”

Miao Bai didn’t speak.

After two seconds, Miao Bai finally said: “Okay.”

With that, Meng Bai pushed the door open and went in. Lin Li was inside and greeted her, asking if she wanted to eat. Meng Bai closed the door behind her and casually made an excuse that she’d already eaten.

Lin Li didn’t ask any more.

Meng Bai said she had homework to do and headed straight to her room with her bag.

Lin Li took her at her word, nodded, and reminded her not to stress too much about studying.

That short walk to her room felt stuffy in Meng Bai’s heart—hard to describe the feeling, but she knew it was because of Miao Bai.

She stayed low-spirited all the way until she entered her room—

As soon as she turned on the light, a figure appeared by the bed.

Meng Bai’s heart pounded heavily.

“You scared me!” Meng Bai shut the door behind her and patted her chest. “Didn’t we just say goodbye?”

Hadn’t it only been a minute since they parted? Hadn’t she just said okay? Why was she here again?

Miao Bai looked at her. “You didn’t say goodbye.”

Meng Bai found it a bit funny. “Just for that? Fine, then—goodbye.”

Miao Bai gave Meng Bai a deep look.

There were a few seconds of silence between them.

In the end, it was Miao Bai who spoke first. “Alright, goodbye.”

With that, she turned and phased through the wall, quickly vanishing from Meng Bai’s sight.

This left Meng Bai feeling very puzzled.

What did that mean?

Did she want to stay? But it didn’t seem like it. In Meng Bai’s impression, Miao Bai was the type who said whatever was on her mind directly—she didn’t beat around the bush.

But just now—

She also seemed a bit aggrieved in her expression. If Meng Bai assumed she wanted to stay and sleep over, that would be too narcissistic.

Meng Bai didn’t dare think down that path, since Miao Bai had already made it very clear.

No matter how much she pondered, she couldn’t find an answer.

She completely couldn’t fathom Miao Bai’s thoughts.

The next day at school, Meng Bai told Xu Zhou and Zhou An all about it.

Zhou An listened with an expression that said she totally got it.

She immediately voiced her opinion. “She just wants to sleep with you, but she’s too shy to say it outright!”

Xu Zhou disagreed. “If that’s the case, then why did she tell Meng Bai that dating or liking someone is so boring?”

Xu Zhou always knew how to cut straight to the heart of the matter, and those words struck deep into Meng Bai’s core.

The three of them sat by the flower bed on campus. With nothing better to do, Zhou An swung her legs idly and chimed in. “Why don’t you just go ask her yourself?”

Meng Bai frowned. “I have asked her. She’s never once said she has feelings for me. Not ever.”

Zhou An was insistent. “But she hasn’t said she likes you, and she hasn’t said she doesn’t either.”

Xu Zhou braced her hands on the edge of the flower bed and tilted her head back to gaze at the sky.

It was a long moment before she let out a heavy sigh. “Sigh—”

Zhou An shot her a sideways glance, puzzled by the occasional melancholy that seemed to come over Xu Zhou out of nowhere. “What’s with you? Sighing at the heavens like that.”

Xu Zhou replied, “Isn’t it possible that Miao Bai has her own hesitations? Her identity is pretty unique, after all.”

Zhou An blinked in confusion. “Isn’t she just a goddess? She’s all-powerful. Wouldn’t someone like that have even more options?”

Xu Zhou turned to face her, her expression turning deadly serious. “She has her limitations too—and she undoubtedly thinks far more deeply about things than we do.”

Meng Bai listened in silence.

Suddenly, she recalled something Miao Bai had said before.

Miao Bai had told her that one day, sooner or later, she would vanish from this world. To her, so many things held little meaning, and she had warned her not to waste time on someone like her.

She came across as quite the pessimist.

And that pessimism seemed to line up perfectly with those evasive answers.

The sun was beating down especially fiercely today.

As Meng Bai sifted through these scattered thoughts and reflected on Miao Bai’s behavior from the night before, an answer finally crystallized in her mind after a long while.

She figured Miao Bai had wanted to stay last night. But since she hadn’t invited her to, Miao Bai had left—and that parting glance confirmed it all. It was her own dull reaction that was to blame.

“You two… to Miao Bai, am I some kind of special existence?”

Zhou An furrowed her brow deeply, as if genuinely mulling it over.

“Yes.”

“Yes.”

Zhou An and Xu Zhou answered in near-perfect unison.

“How so?” Meng Bai perked up suddenly.

Xu Zhou explained, “Remember that night you went out looking for Zhou An and got chased by that thug Zhang Zhou? Then you ran into Miao Bai. For starters, I don’t think I’d ever have luck like that. And even if I did, I doubt I’d be able to stick around her afterward. Her aura is so intense—it makes people want to turn tail and run.”

Meng Bai tilted her head. “Aura? It wasn’t that bad. She was pretty aloof at first, but now she’s quite gentle, isn’t she?”

Zhou An burst out loudly, “That’s only with you!!! Not with us!!!”

“Not with you guys?”

Now Meng Bai was the one tying herself in knots. She’d never really paid attention to how Miao Bai acted around others.

Truth be told, third wheels rarely intruded on their time together, so comparisons were hard to make.

“It’s different—totally different. The moment you chose her, she chose you right back.” Zhou An dropped a line that sounded surprisingly profound.

It landed in Meng Bai’s heart like a small stone plopping into a pond.

She had no idea if Miao Bai had ever truly chosen her.

All she knew was that she herself had chosen Miao Bai from start to finish. From the day Miao Bai entered her life, the world had been bathed in her colors—everything seemed to orbit around her.

Zhou An went on. “If you weren’t special enough to her, she never would’ve helped you out, let alone shared a bed with you. Who’d have the patience to read you bedtime stories?”

Xu Zhou nodded in agreement. “Even if it’s not romantic love, you’re definitely special to her.”

Meng Bai managed a smile, though it carried a sour edge. “Oh, so I should be thrilled about that, huh?”

Zhou An looked utterly baffled. “Huh? You’re not happy hearing that?”

“Not happy.” Meng Bai’s words floated lightly, but it was clear she meant it.

Xu Zhou was equally perplexed. “You’re special to her, and that doesn’t make you happy?”

“Not happy.” Meng Bai ducked her head, fixing her gaze on her own toes. She hated to admit it, but she had no choice. “I’d only be happy if it were that kind of special.”

Zhou An scratched her head. “Come on, how special? What kind? You’re the weird one here.”

Meng Bai spoke deliberately, word by word.

“The truth? The real truth is, I’d only be happy with the special where she likes me back too.”

Worried they might not get it, Meng Bai added, “The one-of-a-kind, number one special—that’s the only kind that would make me happy.”

[When I turned eighteen, three unbelievable things happened to me: my best friend vanished, my father died under mysterious circumstances, and my lover told me she had died eighty years ago.]

"Meng Bai, do you know that Miao Bai is a lunatic?"

"I don't know."

"Then what do you know?"

What did I know?

I knew that on that desperate night when I had nowhere left to turn, I met Miao Bai, and it was she who protected me.

I knew that in the countless days and nights that followed, I would slip into that old house and hold Miao Bai close, our lips meeting in tender kisses.

I knew that I fell in love with Miao Bai at eighteen, even though I understood she might one day vanish from the world.

In the decade that came after, I left the small town behind and ventured into the neon-drenched metropolis, rising to become an elite, a boss in my own right. But I never dated again. I never fell in love with anyone else.

Until one day, someone who looked exactly like Miao Bai appeared in my life...
