Chapter 140: Good Receptivity
Because Elder Sister Red Fox’s soul had successfully found a new vessel, Jiang Xue and Xiao Luohan happily climbed into bed that night.
The air conditioner kept the bedroom at a comfortable temperature, and with the humidifier, they could leave it on all night without worrying about dryness.
Jiang Xue pulled the thin blanket over herself and, recalling the time when Xiao Luo had just crossed over and she had rolled up a summer blanket for her to hug, couldn’t help but chuckle.
“What’s wrong?” Xiao Luohan, also remembering this at the sight of the blanket, asked knowingly, “Why is A-Xue laughing?”
“Nothing… I just feel that I was so clueless and hesitant six months ago!” Jiang Xue said, leaning against Xiao Luohan’s pillow and reminiscing. “But we didn’t know each other very well back then, and we would overthink everything, afraid of offending each other.”
She paused. “Although I still overthink things now, compared to agonizing over it silently, I prefer asking you directly how you feel.”
Building a close relationship required timely and consistent communication.
Since she and Xiao Luo were both willing to talk to each other, and their values and preferences were compatible, there was no need to hide their true feelings.
Xiao Luohan listened attentively, then, after some thought, picked up her phone from the nightstand and opened the notes app.
“Since we’re back here, and I’ve unlocked those recently sealed memories, I’ll also show you the locked notes,” she said, entering the password and opening the first locked note.
Jiang Xue’s heart skipped a beat. Besides nervousness, she also felt a strange excitement.
When she first saw the lock icon, she had been curious about the contents, but she had quickly dismissed it as “Xiao Luo probably pressed it accidentally” or “Xiao Luo was probably trying out the new function but forgot to unlock it.” She hadn’t looked at it again, nor asked Xiao Luo about it.
As she was recalling this, Xiao Luohan’s phone screen appeared before her eyes.
Jiang Xue quickly took the phone and started reading.
【Restless sleep in the new world, waking up repeatedly, feeling a sense of loss. Compared to the past, tonight, without Xue by my side… This conclusion needs further observation and confirmation.】
“This is about your insomnia when you first arrived!” Jiang Xue exclaimed softly. “Later, when I came back from evening self-study and slept with you, you seemed to sleep very soundly.”
“Yes, that’s right,” Xiao Luohan nodded.
Jiang Xue continued scrolling.
She could still discuss the past with Xiao Luohan while reading the first entry, but the following entries stunned her:
【Jiang Xue likes directness.】
【Such unguardedness, even proactively accommodating me, is it truly, as she said, only towards me? Or would it be the same with anyone else?】
【If Jiang Xue goes to university alone, will she be deceived in a relationship?】
Further down were even more impactful entries.
Like her feelings and Xiao Luohan’s feelings during their first kiss.
And her body’s strange reaction the first time Xiao Luohan used the little dolphin on her…
“What… what are you recording?!” Jiang Xue looked at the person beside her in shock, her face flushing crimson. “Are you sure I’m allowed to see this?!”
“Why not?” Xiao Luohan blinked, a mischievous glint in her eyes. “These are all my genuine worries and experiences.”
Jiang Xue felt her mind buzzing. Logically, this was how it should be between couples, but for some reason, her heart was racing, and her face was burning.
“Since they’re locked, why… why aren’t they locked anymore?” she stammered.
“After all, they’re also my secrets, although they might not be important,” Xiao Luohan said, reaching out and gently touching Jiang Xue’s flushed cheek with her slightly cool hand. “But now that we’ve overcome the most difficult period and are moving towards the future, I wanted to find a time to show you my thoughts and feelings.”
Jiang Xue didn’t speak for a long time, but her hand honestly scrolled through the remaining locked notes, her curiosity piqued.
Were these all of Xiao Luo’s secrets? Were there any more?
Now that they were closer, it was difficult for her to hide secrets from Xiao Luo. The question swirled in her mind, making her increasingly curious, and she couldn’t help but ask.
Having anticipated this question, Xiao Luohan smiled faintly and pulled her into an embrace.
Jiang Xue also adjusted her position, offering her ear, waiting for the answer.
But the answer didn’t come. Instead, she felt a soft nibble on her earlobe, making her gasp.
“As for the other secrets, it’s probably just my possessiveness,” Xiao Luohan said slowly, as Jiang Xue looked at her in surprise. “I want to always be by your side, or find a reasonable excuse to bind you to me… I think I’ve mentioned this more than once before, right?”
“Th-That’s true…”
“Do you think I only feel this way because I lack a sense of security?” Xiao Luohan asked, then answered herself, “I’ve rarely asked for anything in my life. I could only have what others and my mother gave me.”
“Of course, I could also ‘demand’ things with my status as a princess, but I learned at a young age that my status was insignificant, and even if I voiced my needs and desires, they would rarely be fulfilled… during those days, besides my mother, only my elder sister responded to me, so I also considered her the most important person in my life.”
“Later, after losing my mother and elder sister, trapped in that mire, I met you.”
“You brought me the light I had hoped for, even the light I had never imagined, shining it upon me, you treated me…” she paused. “You were so good to me, so good that I want you to always be with me, and I can always have you.”
At the time, she hadn’t known what the future held, or how long she could live.
The illness that had plagued her since childhood, and the harsh environment she lived in, made her life precarious, so she had only one thought: Being able to meet Jiang Xue before dying, she had no regrets in this life.
But things had changed unexpectedly. Through a series of coincidences and everyone’s efforts, she had finally arrived in Jiang Xue’s world.
She truly had Jiang Xue now, being able to see her smile every day, hear her voice, even cuddle with her every night…
The shadows of the past were gradually filled with the light of her new life, allowing her to think clearly, to slowly examine her heart, and find the most important wish she truly wanted to fulfill.
—She wanted to have Jiang Xue.
In every sense of the word.
This was an incredibly bold desire, something she wouldn’t have dared to imagine before, that one day, she would have such feelings for someone.
But as time passed, as she gradually adapted to the customs and social norms of this world, and as her relationship with Jiang Xue deepened, she was happy that she could have such bold thoughts.
This meant that she was no longer bound by the outdated traditions of the feudal society.
Hearing such high praise, Jiang Xue was embarrassed. “So I’m that important to you…”
“You’ve always been important!” Xiao Luohan emphasized. “So, no matter what you do or where you go in the future, I’ll find a way to be near you, so you can easily find me.”
There was no room in her heart for anyone else.
Jiang Xue suddenly felt that this trip was the most perfect plan of the entire summer vacation.
The doubts that had clouded her mind, the reasons for their “escalating relationship” that she would occasionally think about when she couldn’t sleep at night, and her uncertainty about the future, all seemed to be dispelled by Xiao Luo at this moment.
Actually, she didn’t need to be so conflicted, but this was her first relationship, and the person she liked was not only the most important person to her, but also someone who had received her kindness in a life-or-death situation. She was always worried that their relationship was tainted by “gratitude,” and she didn’t want Xiao Luo to force herself to love her out of a sense of obligation.
Whenever she was confused, it was Xiao Luo who firmly held her hand, and in every heart-to-heart conversation like this, Xiao Luo emphasized: I’m yours, and you’re mine, we share the same wishes and desires.
—They were, in every sense of the word, inseparable.
She put down Xiao Luo’s phone, wrapped her arms around her, and replaced words with a kiss.
Considering that they were going out tomorrow, to a crowded place, they didn’t get too carried away this time.
“It’s time for bed, horse riding will be tiring tomorrow,” Xiao Luohan finally reminded the clingy cat, reaching out to turn off the lights.
They slept soundly in each other’s arms, while the two in the other guest room were still lying awkwardly in their beds.
Jiang Mei felt that Xie Xitong was being a bit too bold tonight, first asking if they could kiss, and after being firmly rejected, blinking and then asking, “Then can we at least sleep together? I used to nap with Mei-jiejie when I was little!”
That was different.
She felt that she couldn’t set this precedent, so she took her quilt and was about to switch rooms, or even sleep on the living room sofa. Uncle Seuss’s sofa was wide and soft, and she had liked sleeping there when she was younger.
But Xie Xitong’s words made her reconsider: “If Mei-jiejie truly couldn’t stand me, why would she agree to this ‘girlfriend experience card’ request?”
…It was to make her give up.
Agreeing to something and then going back on her word was something Jiang Mei couldn’t accept, but wasn’t her current behavior exactly that, “going back on her word”?
When she turned around and met Xie Xitong’s smiling eyes, she finally realized that she had fallen into this little sister next door’s trap.
A-Xi undoubtedly wanted to pursue her, and she, out of various considerations, had chosen the seemingly safer and less conflicting approach—agreeing, and subtly conveying certain things to A-Xi during this process. That was her initial intention.
There was nothing wrong with the plan, but somehow, it had “backfired” during execution.
And what made her even more speechless was that she didn’t actually feel what A-Xi called “unable to stand.”
Was it because she had watched this girl grow up, seen all sides of her personality, both light and dark, so she had become accustomed to her presence and unreasonable requests?
Even such obviously inappropriate behavior didn’t bother her. Her refusal was based on “differences in status and experience,” not genuine aversion.
After much thought, Jiang Mei still agreed to share a bed with Xie Xitong.
But she insisted on placing a thick quilt between them, in case Xie Xitong tried anything while she was asleep.
