Until Fan Ning’s voice sounded at the door.
Then Yue Yiyue understood the deeper meaning of those words.
“Yiyue, I left something here.” The person outside spoke in a soft, eerie tone.
“Let me in to get it—they say these things must be dealt with tonight—”
It wasn’t dark yet, and Yue Yiyue hadn’t turned on the Dormitory lights.
The doors and windows were closed tight, covered with privacy paper that wouldn’t reveal the shadows inside.
Yue Yiyue stood still, not even daring to breathe, pretending she hadn’t returned.
The knocking at the door grew more urgent outside.
As if certain someone was in the room.
Yue Yiyue silently closed her eyes.
“You want to put me to death too?”
“You all want me dead?”
“Yue Yiyue, are you jealous of me?”
“You fake do-gooder—”
The tone shifted from normal to heart-wrenching cries, then to curses at the end.
Yue Yiyue remained completely silent.
Not that she didn’t want to.
But she couldn’t……
Yue Yiyue watched the blood flowing in through the gap under the door.
Anyone with eyes could see that whoever opened the door was done for.
The person at the door seemed finally tired of wailing.
After some rustling sounds came a puzzled voice. “Eh, why did it flow inside…….”
The voice was bewildered, carrying a hint of innocence.
Soon, the sound of dragging something heavy echoed in the corridor.
Yue Yiyue stayed quiet; she wouldn’t naively go investigate.
She firmly believed the other side wouldn’t give up so easily.
What should she do now?
Her peripheral vision swept over the balcony window opened for ventilation…….
She closed the balcony window and the bathroom window tight, but still felt uneasy. After much hesitation, she also pulled the balcony door shut and drew the blackout curtains.
Creating the illusion that no one was in the Dormitory.
After surveying the terrain around her from her position, she chose a spot perfect for escaping.
Ye Qiu had said not to leave the Dormitory.
The staff rules also stated clearly: respect students’ privacy; do not enter dormitories without permission.
Her palms had sweated at some point, and Yue Yiyue suddenly missed Ye Qiu a little.
If she were here, she would handle it casually and effortlessly.
She would agree to anything in her fear.
A thumping sound came from outside the window, like something flying, and Yue Yiyue thought, ‘As expected.’
———
A dull impact sounded, and Yue Yiyue frowned. She began to doubt these so-called staff rules a bit.
But Ye Qiu had said the same thing.
There were no handy weapons around, and Yue Yiyue wasn’t sure if she could really fight such a monster…….
In this emergency, Yue Yiyue had no choice but to rally her spirits.
The most important thing right now was that she had to survive; she wanted to live on.
Glass shattering sounded from the other side of the wall.
Yue Yiyue hesitated as she looked at the door.
Going out meant certain death.
But staying inside?
Gamble?
Could she afford to?
If possible, should she consider using that Blue Clothes or the Faction Badge?
Come on, think, you dead brain! In the darkness, Yue Yiyue bit her finger subconsciously; she was anxious to the extreme.
Ye Qiu must have known something like this would happen tonight.
She was a good person and had even given a reminder.
The glass cracks grew larger.
Yue Yiyue paused, then hid in the gap between the bed and the wall—a blind spot.
At this point, she could only pray Ye Qiu hadn’t lied and that staying inside would keep her safe.
She kept reminding herself that going out would be certain death.
Footsteps sounded outside again.
But this time, the footsteps were unusually steady.
A knock sounded at the door—this time, it was Ye Qiu’s voice.
“Yiyue, I’m back.”
“Open the door for me.”
The familiar voice made Yue Yiyue feel like her savior had finally arrived.
She glanced back at the glass window nearly shattered to pieces, and the impact sounds paused with the footsteps.
The knocking at the door rang out again, urging Yue Yiyue to open it.
As Yue Yiyue prepared to respond, her gaze fell on the hook by the door, seeing only the key she had casually hung there……
She slowly halted her steps. Imitating a person should be easy.
Yue Yiyue silently covered her mouth and crouched in the corner.
She didn’t know how long she endured in the darkness.
Behind her were the tireless sounds of impacts on the glass.
After a long time without fully shattering it, Yue Yiyue had grown accustomed to the noise and even found it somewhat hypnotic.
At the door were repeated inexplicable pleas for help—sometimes Gu Nanqiu’s voice, sometimes Ye Qiu’s, sometimes Zhang Yang’s.
The goal was always the same: lure Yue Yiyue out.
Yue Yiyue went from initial terror to numbness.
Now she sat on the bed wrapped in the blanket, ready to sleep.
She just hadn’t washed up yet and felt a bit dirty.
Various wails and cries for help kept sounding outside the room.
Yue Yiyue didn’t dare move, not one bit.
Her courage wasn’t that great; she could only ensure she didn’t do anything stupid.
Because it was very possible this was another trap to trick her out.
When would Ye Qiu really come back?
She genuinely missed her.
She was also a bit worried about her safety.
One couldn’t casually linger outside at night.
Yue Yiyue leaned against the bedhead, staring blankly at the door, her eyelids heavy and hard to keep open.
Even her consciousness began to blur.
————
Ye Qiu held the key and looked at the layers upon layers of thick bloodstains at the door and the door shut tight.
She touched a yellowed talisman in the corner, covered in layer after layer of black scabs.
It looked unusable now—truly too stubborn.
The door opened with a click, and Ye Qiu looked at the person sleeping soundly against the bed.
Perhaps from mental exhaustion, she hadn’t even changed clothes.
She hugged the blanket there, looking quite pitiful.
Casually, she hung the key on Little Sheep.
“Yiyue, get up and wash up. I’m back.”
Though she wanted more to carry the person herself, the timing wasn’t right yet. Ye Qiu looked somewhat regretfully at the person on the bed as she stirred, rubbed her bleary eyes, and dazedly stood up.
She mumbled something about turning on the light.
“Cover your eyes first.” Ye Qiu reminded softly.
With a click, the Dormitory’s incandescent light turned on. Only then did Yue Yiyue clearly see the person at the door—her school uniform stained with much brownish stuff.
Not like bloodstains; more like mud.
As if she had taken a tumble.
Yue Yiyue looked at the key now hanging on Little Sheep, making a pair at last.
In that instant, her heart—which had been in her throat—finally settled.
“It’s good that you’re back. That one over there…….” Seeing Ye Qiu remain so calm and composed, Yue Yiyue pointed at the balcony. “I’m not sure if it’s still usable.”
“You go check it out first.” Yue Yiyue walked over and opened the door.
“It’s an Illusion.” Ye Qiu explained briefly before heading to the bathroom.
She stood at the bathroom door, tossed the clothes stained with filth into the washing machine, washed her hands clean, then returned while ruffling Yue Yiyue’s head.
Just like ruffling a puppy’s head, it carried a tone of praise. “Good girl, you kept the promise so well, my little treasure~”
Her rising intonation brimmed with delight.
Yue Yiyue didn’t resist such praise at all.
“Th-thanks. After all, you’ve been helping me all along and reminded me.” Yue Yiyue steadied her expression. “Go wash up first. You must be uncomfortable like this.”
With a glance from the corner of her eye at the balcony, she saw the glass smooth and intact, without a single crack.
If not for the dried red stains on the floor, Yue Yiyue would have thought it all a nightmare.
————
Both had finished washing up. Yue Yiyue sat on the bed, completely sleepless.
But there was nothing good to pass the time with right now.
If Gu Nanqiu were there, she could listen to her talk about what happened during the holiday, how things were before, and where they wanted to go play in the future.
Whenever they spent time together, Nanqiu loved talking most about the future.
Climbing mountains together, watching movies together, traveling to unfamiliar cities together, seeing the sea together, raising cats together.
Nanqiu had even mentioned, after graduation, should they go to the same city?
Then they could rent a place together.
Most of the time, Yue Yiyue just listened to these things that felt so distant to her.
After all, she wasn’t sure if she could live that long.
in the original work, she had only survived until senior year—not because “Yue Yiyue” could live on, but because afterward, Yue Yiyue served as background, only encountering another supernatural event in her senior year.
Recalling up to now, Yue Yiyue vaguely felt something was different.
But it also seemed perfectly reasonable.
“They over there can’t hold back from wanting to kill you anymore.” Ye Qiu’s voice suddenly echoed in the Dormitory.
“Can I refuse?”
A dazed voice rang out, matched by its owner’s messy, tousled hair from just waking up, her eyes unfocused.
From Ye Qiu’s angle, she looked utterly adorable.
Remember! They can’t legally kill you if you refuse!
