Chapter 218: Mask Under Attack? p1
Lin Jiayao glanced at the list, seeing three “Unnamed” entries. Simply using Arabic numerals to differentiate them wasn’t very intuitive. For easier identification in the future, especially with new slots opening up, she decided to give these zombies simple names.
As evidenced by her previous naming conventions, although simple and not particularly creative, they evoked clear images and abilities.
Lin Jiayao first focused on the severely injured No. 5.
This Purple-Skinned Giant, which had been heavily injured in Japan and brought her a wave of compensation, was also her first B-rank zombie. It was time to give it a name.
Since it was No. 5, and its body was purple, how about calling it Wu Zi… (Five Purple)
No, that sounded terrible.
Perhaps for easier memorization, with a thought, the “Unnamed” label on No. 5 began to twist and morph, transforming into two Chinese characters.
[No.5: [Ino] Severely Injured (Available)]
After naming No. 5, Lin Jiayao turned her attention to the other two.
No. 2 was in India, not very powerful, just a tool for “carrying goods.”
Given its strange appearance, its long hair, and its aquatic nature, Lin Jiayao simply named it [Water Monkey].
As for No. 7, Lin Jiayao didn’t overthink it and let it inherit the name given by its original owner, [Gundam].
Now, with all of them named, the list was much clearer, the names and zombies easily matched.
Lin Jiayao glanced at her Safehouse. There were twenty bags of Blood Crystal Serum inside. Considering the purchasing power of the Awakened, this was a bit too much.
After all, India didn’t seem to have the same unified power and unity as the Northern Alliance. They seemed more like a disorganized mess, engaging in internal struggles.
Putting ten bags of Blood Crystal Serum back into the warehouse, Lin Jiayao only carried ten bags and clicked on No. 2 to log in.
After a brief moment of darkness, the scent of earth and grass disappeared from Lin Jiayao’s nose, and the soft touch of Huayibai was gone from her hand.
A dry wind, carrying sand, brushed past her ears, and the temperature rose by about ten degrees.
Due to the time difference, India was about two and a half hours behind China. It was now dusk, approaching nightfall, but the sky hadn’t completely darkened.
Opening her eyes and brushing aside the hair obscuring her vision, Lin Jiayao saw rows of figures before her.
When she extracted, she was in a deserted park that had become a wasteland, but now, the park was filled with female Indian soldiers carrying firearms, seemingly surrounding and protecting her.
Protecting her?
All women. They were likely sent by that Indian B-rank, Sharma.
“It moved!”
“Go tell Sister Sharma!”
After a startled cry from beside her, the armed women in front of Lin Jiayao quickly dispersed, creating a large space around her.
After confirming that they wouldn’t shoot at her, Lin Jiayao used her long arms to support herself and slowly stood up.
Listening to their earlier discussion, they seemed to be going to inform the B-rank Awakened.
Just as well; it saved Lin Jiayao the trouble of searching… it seemed that the Awakened named Sharma valued the Blood Crystal Serum very much.
This level of importance even made Lin Jiayao wonder if exchanging one bag of Blood Crystal Serum for three Blood Crystals was a loss.
But there was no such thing as a loss or profit. No matter how precious these things were to Awakened, the cost for Lin Jiayao was only one Blood Crystal, and they could be produced infinitely.
She had to consider whether others could afford it, not how much profit she could make per bag.
If the selling price was truly beyond what others could afford, then they might consider not buying, but robbing.
Therefore, Lin Jiayao felt that her pricing was still reasonable, within the acceptable range for Awakened, just a little painful for them.
Lin Jiayao leaned against a nearby stone bench and sat down. While waiting for Sharma’s arrival, she checked the surrounding Extraction Points and extraction time.
The closest Extraction Point was 3km away, the furthest 9km, and the allotted time was two hours.
For a transaction, this was more than enough time. Half an hour for extraction would suffice.
She could even have Sharma send someone to escort her to the Extraction Point. Sharma likely wouldn’t refuse such a small request.
Not long after, a hazy figure descended from the sky and landed softly beside Lin Jiayao.
It was Sharma.
Unlike before, Sharma wasn’t wrapped in blankets or other coverings. Her lower body was still carefully concealed, but her bare, white feet showed no signs of injury.
Sharma’s natural skin color was finally revealed. It wasn’t the brownish-black typical of Indians, but more like a Caucasian’s. Her upper body was wrapped in a simple, light gauze, revealing glimpses of a golden silk bra and the graceful curves of her waist and abdomen.
Her lower body was likely still recovering, but she looked much better than her previous monstrous form.
“You’re finally awake, my friend, dear Lin.”
Seeing Lin Jiayao, Sharma’s eyes lit up. She quickly walked to Lin Jiayao’s side and extended her right hand, not minding Lin Jiayao’s zombie arm.
“Long time no see.” Lin Jiayao extended her right hand and shook Sharma’s.
“Shall we talk somewhere else?” Sharma’s excitement was evident. She took Lin Jiayao’s right hand and was about to lead her away.
“If it’s not too far.” Lin Jiayao replied.
“Not far, not far, we’ll be there soon.” Sharma held Lin Jiayao’s rough, dry hand, which hadn’t touched water for a long time, and walked briskly forward.
After walking for less than three minutes, Lin Jiayao saw a library-like building and was pulled inside by Sharma.
Not only had the buildings here been repaired, but even the zombies along the way had been mostly cleared. There had been quite a few zombies here when Lin Jiayao extracted before.
Entering the library, away from the wind and sand, the surroundings were much quieter.
Sharma pulled Lin Jiayao to a large sofa in the center and sat down. As soon as she sat down, Sharma stared intently at Lin Jiayao and asked:
“Do you have more goods this time?”
Sharma seemed to desperately need the Blood Crystal Serum.
Seeing that Lin Jiayao didn’t move, the anxious Sharma directly tore open the cushion of the sofa beside her, revealing the Blood Crystals piled inside.
“Same as last time, I need ten bags.” Sharma stood up, grabbed two Blood Crystals, handed them to Lin Jiayao, and said, “Absolutely pure blood stones, full weight.”
Then, Sharma took out a brand new, unopened travel bag from somewhere, tore open the packaging, and put the Blood Crystals inside one by one.
“One… two… three…” After filling the bag with Blood Crystals, she placed it heavily beside Lin Jiayao. “Thirty, exactly. I didn’t have a bag last time, but I prepared one this time.”
Sharma’s eagerness was written all over her face. Before the apocalypse, if she were a businesswoman, she would have been the type to be cheated out of everything.
“Ten bags.” Lin Jiayao didn’t hesitate, and directly took out ten bags of Blood Crystal Serum, then picked up the bag of Blood Crystals and put it into the Safehouse.
The full bag easily fit into the 5×5 Safehouse, with even a row of space left.
If Lin Jiayao used the “space folding technique” of putting bags within bags to store Blood Crystals, she could probably fit more than a hundred with space to spare.
Lin Jiayao didn’t dwell on where Sharma had gotten so many Blood Crystals in such a short time.
There was still uncoagulated blood on those Blood Crystals. Lin Jiayao’s nose was very sensitive; it wasn’t the old blood of zombies, but fresh human blood.
Clearly, the source of these Blood Crystals wasn’t as simple as last time.
Sharma, ignoring Lin Jiayao’s thoughts, immediately took two bags of Blood Crystal Serum upon seeing them and swallowed them whole, bags and all.
The bags were corroded by Sharma’s ability before reaching her throat, leaving only the pure Blood Crystal Serum flowing down.
Due to excessive intake and the accumulation of blood crystals in her body, Sharma’s blood vessels and pupils gradually turned scarlet.
Ignoring Lin Jiayao’s presence, she tore off the cloth strips and gauze skirt covering her lower body, watching as the rotting black flesh on her inner thighs gradually filled with red, new flesh budding and slowly recovering.
“Still as effective as before, Lin.” Sharma smiled, tying the torn cloth strips around her waist, turning the long skirt into a short one, covering her thighs.
“Yes.” Lin Jiayao didn’t intend to chat much. With thirty Blood Crystals in hand, she just wanted to extract.
“By the way, do you have any intelligence you want to know this time?” Sharma suddenly remembered the additional condition of the previous transaction and asked.
So honest?
Lin Jiayao looked at Sharma in surprise, not expecting her to remember the details of their previous transaction.
At least this simple-minded person was easy to talk to.
Since she had brought it up, it wouldn’t be right for Lin Jiayao not to ask anything.
After thinking for a moment, Lin Jiayao looked at Sharma and asked:
“Is New Delhi the area with the most Awakened in India?”
“No, it’s Mumbai.” Sharma answered without hesitation. “They’ve been recruiting on the radio, so it’s probably the most.”
Mumbai, a port city?
“Do you have any intelligence on Mumbai?”
“No, I haven’t heard from their radio station for a long time… about two weeks.”
The seaside… lost contact…
Lin Jiayao could roughly guess what had happened.
“Why are you asking about that? Are you going to Mumbai?”
Sharma’s voice suddenly became tense, and she quickly said, “Can I still buy blood stone water from you?”
“No, I’m not going.” Lin Jiayao shook her head.
She could barely manage herself; she didn’t have time to care about what was happening so far away.
Come to think of it, if this “beach landing” of seabed creatures was a global phenomenon, then the “Hand of Freedom” in Los Angeles must have also suffered.
If the invasion of these seabed creatures continued, it would result in fewer and fewer places where Lin Jiayao could log in… This wasn’t a good sign.
Now Lin Jiayao felt more like she was caught in a resource plundering war with the seabed creatures, competing to see who could gather the limited resources on land faster to strengthen themselves.
Plundering…?
Besides the seabed creatures’ prophecy about her, Lin Jiayao thought of another possibility.
Was it possible that the creatures on the seabed had only recently evolved to A-rank on a large scale?
And after evolving to A-rank and awakening some intelligence, did they realize something, which was why they started frantically plundering the resources on land?
For example, they realized that if they wanted to go further, the resources were completely insufficient…
The total amount of blood crystals on Earth was fixed, just like social wealth. If some people had more wealth, then naturally more people would fall into poverty.
Did they all realize this after becoming A-rank, and in order to avoid fighting among themselves, they chose to slaughter the blood crystals on land?
The more Lin Jiayao thought about it, the more likely this guess seemed.
If the total amount of blood crystals was fixed, and it was being consumed every second by using abilities, then the longer the time dragged on, the lower the possibility of A-rank evolving further.
Because the consumed Blood Crystals were truly gone.
This also explained why, in the eyes of the prophetic Awakened Wu Hejun, she was the Demon King who devoured all blood crystals.
Because she had a “crystal-devouring behemoth” inside her body, the system.
The blood crystals swallowed by the system were directly gone, and the rewards or compensation the system gave her were mostly collected by controlling some unlucky zombie far away.
Now the amount of blood crystals swallowed by the system inside Lin Jiayao’s body could create who knows how many B-rank Awakened… and it hadn’t even reached its limit.
Lin Jiayao slowly frowned.
Was this a battle for evolution?
Even if she didn’t participate, she would be pushed forward or swallowed by this torrent of evolution driven by various desires. Everyone was tied to a canoe on a one-way street.
Either move forward, or be pushed down by the people behind.
It seemed like… a mouse experiment.
Lin Jiayao hadn’t felt anything before, only that she was being pushed forward by various accidents.
But as the number of B-ranks she controlled increased, and she saw more and more situations, she gradually sensed this phenomenon.
“What’s wrong? Lin, you look very… serious.” Sharma originally wanted to say “scary”, but in order not to offend the person who brought the good stuff, she changed the word.
“Nothing, just thinking… Be careful by the sea,” Lin Jiayao casually reminded, and then continued, “Send a few people to escort me, I want to change places to rest.”
“Okay, Lin, where do you want to go, I’ll take you there.” Sharma directly picked up the other eight bags of Blood Crystal Serum on the table, put them in another backpack, put it on, and gestured to Lin Jiayao.
After taking Lin Jiayao through the already darkened streets and sending her to the Extraction Point, seeing her inexplicably sitting there with her eyes closed, Sharma stopped.
After standing guard for this “Lin” for a few minutes, feeling that it was safe here, and “Lin” didn’t move at all like before, she left with the Blood Crystal Serum.
Sharma first told someone about “Lin’s” location and asked them to send more people to protect her. Then she carried the bag of Blood Crystal Serum and ran towards the center of the capital.
Soon, she arrived at the temple she went to before, found the old priest Sharma, and directly threw the backpack onto the table.
“This is what I said, the perfect nourishment for Mother Goddess, old priest,” Sharma looked at Wiyas in front of her and said with a smile, “Absolutely genuine.”
Wiyas in front of her also clearly felt the attraction of the Blood Crystal Serum inside. He reached out and gently touched the bag of Blood Crystal Serum under the dim light.
Sharma, impatient, directly pulled the bag back, bared her teeth, and said:
“Old man, don’t just touch it without giving me blood stones. Five per bag, you still owe me two.”
Wiyas looked at Sharma’s almost fully recovered body and sighed slowly:
“I didn’t expect that what you, a lunatic, said was actually true… but even so, you can’t just rob it. Guard Singh was almost beaten to death by you.”
“Just say whether you’ll give it or not.”
“I’ll give it.”
Soon, this forced transaction was completed. In the current capital, New Delhi, there was absolutely no one who could defeat Sharma in her prime.
After handing over the blood stones, Sharma left with them on her back. Wiyas looked at the eight bags in front of him and fell silent.
Wasn’t it ten bags as agreed before?
The old priest sighed slowly.
Sharma had fully recovered, and he was already old and frail, without any room for evolution.
If he didn’t make any changes, then the situation in New Delhi might change drastically.
Now his only hope was to feed Mother Goddess to a higher level…
He devoutly picked up the blood stone liquid in front of him and turned to walk towards where Mother Goddess was kept.
It was time for those subjects who had been comforted by Mother Goddess for so long to sacrifice themselves for her.
