Chapter 49
After eating the next morning, at the crack of dawn, around 7 AM, the four of them washed up and set out.
Song Xun was at the helm again.
She wasn’t driving too fast, but she wasn’t slow either. She was just very steady. Ji Tang sat behind her, sipping warm milk from a sippy cup that Song Xun had specially found for her.
The warmth spread through her limbs.
Shi Tou and Ji Chao sat in the back, cautiously surveying their surroundings. After the torrential rain stopped, the weather had been quite good for the past two days. Although the sun hadn’t fully risen yet, the water was calm, with no wind or waves, and even a light, hazy mist was rising.
After repeatedly glancing at Song Xun, Shi Tou finally couldn’t help but ask, “Big Sis, is something making you happy? You seem to be in a really good mood today.”
His voice was muffled. At his words, Ji Tang and Ji Chao both turned to look.
But no one said anything.
Seeing that they didn’t seem to believe him, Shi Tou’s eyes widened. “You guys don’t see it?”
Song Xun didn’t say anything.
Ji Tang also remained silent, quietly drinking her warm milk. But no one noticed that the part of the straw she was biting on was completely white.
Ji Chao, on the other hand, blinked, turned to look at Song Xun’s back, and then shook his head in a rather puzzled manner. “I don’t see it.”
When she was with Ji Tang and the cubs, Song Xun always smiled, a smile completely devoid of her usual coldness, a smile that made one feel warm and at peace. But at other times, even with them, though she wouldn’t be cold, she wouldn’t always be smiling either.
And…
She was facing away. He could only see her back. How could he tell that she was in a good mood?
But after thinking about it, these people had grown up together. After so many years, it was normal for them to have a certain rapport. So he didn’t say anything more.
He gave up.
But Shi Tou didn’t care. He was still cheerfully asking Song Xun. Song Xun didn’t answer, nor did she turn around, just pretended not to hear. But the smile at the corners of her lips couldn’t be suppressed, almost reaching her ears.
Finally, tired of being pestered, she said, “So what if I’m happy? If you keep talking, I’ll give you stir-fried vegetables for lunch.”
Shi Tou immediately backed down.
Ji Tang, who had been watching the whole thing: “…”
Under her dark hair, the tips of her ears turned a faint red.
Without any landmarks and not knowing the way, even with Ji Chao, who had worked as a security guard there for a few months and could at least point them in the right direction, they still got lost a few times.
In the end, it took them almost 4 hours. It was really far.
In reality, there were many other farms of various types around Jingbei City, but this one, not only was it the closest, but it was also undoubtedly the most complete and the largest.
In the distance, they could see lush green trees stretching to the horizon. But in this area, there were no tall buildings in sight. The buildings here were probably not very high and had been completely submerged by the flood.
“Wow, this is too…”
Shi Tou’s eyes were wide, almost speechless. “The farm isn’t flooded, is it? Did we come here for nothing?”
Ji Chao looked carefully with his binoculars. “The farm here is built on a mountain. Someone bought the whole mountain to run it. The water has flooded halfway up the mountain. We’ll have to go up a bit more.”
Song Xun wasn’t as worried as Shi Tou. She nodded in agreement.
As they went further, the force of the water grew weaker, which undoubtedly meant that the pressure underwater was decreasing. They were almost at the end.
Finally, the land and the mountain forest appeared not far in front of them. Feeling they were close enough, Song Xun stopped the assault boat. The four of them put on their raincoats and boots and stepped into the water.
She put the boat into her space. Shi Tou helped Ji Chao, and Song Xun held onto Ji Tang, protecting her, as the four of them slowly waded up.
The water was wet. With one step, the water came up to their knees, almost over their boots. The flooded mountainside was muddy and difficult to walk on.
They couldn’t speed up.
For safety, the four of them could only walk slowly.
By the time they emerged from the water, their rain boots were completely covered in mud, and the friction as they walked was extremely uncomfortable.
Perhaps because the tornado, without the obstruction of tall buildings, had hit here with terrifying force, large swaths of trees had been uprooted, and countless more were broken or tilted.
The entire mountain forest was a mess.
Even the farm built on the mountain had not been spared. The main gate was broken, and several large holes had been torn in the walls of the workshops. The inside was even worse. If you didn’t know what had happened, you would think this place had been abandoned and in ruins for a long time.
But it was a good thing. They didn’t have to pick any locks.
But the only thing that wasn’t so good was that it was only the second day after the torrential rain had stopped. The ground was so muddy that a single step would sink you half a foot deep.
This made it very difficult for the four of them to walk.
As they entered through a broken wall, they could still vaguely see that the scale of the farm was truly large, and all the areas were very well-organized. But it was a pity. It was all in ruins, almost completely destroyed.
Bags of feed were scattered all over the ground. Most of the packaging was broken, and the contents were mixed with broken bricks and mud, making them unusable. But a small portion was still intact.
But although it was a small portion, given the scale of the farm, it was still a lot, and there was a great variety.
But it had been scattered by the wind, and it was quite a bit of work to find the usable ones in the mud. So they left the strongest, Shi Tou, to do the heavy lifting.
Ji Chao, Ji Tang, and Song Xun split into three groups.
Alright, they had originally wanted to split into two, but neither Song Xun nor Ji Chao felt at ease with Ji Tang going alone. But this woman was stubborn and didn’t want to be a burden.
In the end, they had to compromise.
But three groups was indeed more efficient. They gathered all the usable things together, which would make it easier for Song Xun to collect them later.
There were also a lot of dead animals. After almost two months of torrential rain following the tornado, some had already rotted, and the smell was particularly foul.
After searching for a long time, they didn’t find any living ones. They didn’t know if they had escaped or died. But given the scale of the farm, the number of dead animals didn’t add up.
So it was probably the former.
But if they had gone into the mountain forest, it would be difficult to find them.
They collected a lot of rice, flour, and oil from the canteen. The opened ones were unusable, so they didn’t bother. There were dozens of bags and barrels of unopened ones, and Song Xun collected them all.
Although most of the walls had collapsed and the animals had escaped or died, they later found a few places that were still intact.
But without being fed, after almost two months, many of the animals had starved to death. But there were still some alive.
Chickens, not counting the dead ones, there were still 300 alive in the chicken coop, even if they were listless.
Geese, 355.
Meat rabbits, 200.
Pigeons, 150.
But the pigsties, duck pens, and cattle pens were all destroyed.
The sheep pens were separated by breed. Song Xun recognized a few, like the Small-tailed Han sheep, the Boer goat, the Black goat, and the Matou sheep. In total, they caught over 200.
There were also horses in the stables, but the number was small, only 15 left.
In the end, they even found a place where ostriches were raised, but unfortunately, there were none left.
Shi Tou, like a foodie, licked his lips and asked Song Xun with great regret, “Big Sis, do you think ostrich meat is delicious?”
Song Xun was speechless. “How would I know?”
They had turned the farm upside down. Just the travel and searching had taken up a small day. It was already past 4 PM.
The sky was getting dark, and night was falling.
Without the obstruction of tall buildings or glass walls, and with the mountain forest mostly destroyed, the cold wind, mixed with the damp air, made one’s hair stand on end.
They hadn’t eaten all day and were starving. And the ground was so difficult to walk on. It was fine during the day when they could see, but at night, even with light, Song Xun was afraid of danger.
So she took out two outdoor tents, cleared a relatively clean workshop, and set them up. Shi Tou and Ji Chao in one, and Song Xun and Ji Tang in the other.
It was past 5 PM when they finished eating. The sky had completely darkened. After a long day, they were all tired. They went back to their own tents to sleep.
Shi Tou was quite energetic, or perhaps he had gotten addicted to playing “Fight the Landlord.” He voluntarily sat outside on a small stool to keep watch.
Although the sound effects were turned down low, the surroundings were too quiet, and a little sound still carried.
In the tent.
Song Xun took out a double bed. It was a good thing the tent was big enough. Although it was a bit cramped, it still fit.
And so, amidst the faint sounds of “I can’t afford it,” “grab the landlord,” and “king bomb,” Ji Tang had just finished washing up and was about to take off her outer clothes when Song Xun, who had been holding back, holding back…
Finally couldn’t hold it in any longer.
She pounced. Song Xun, who had taken off her black sports jacket and was only wearing a short-sleeved shirt, her usually warm body not feeling the cold, grabbed Ji Tang’s arm and pulled her back. Caught completely off guard, the female Omega lost her balance and fell back. Before she could even let out a cry of surprise, she was pulled into an embrace.
The faint scent of pine enveloped her, and her breath hitched. Even the glands at the back of her neck throbbed as if they were swelling.
The white short-sleeved shirt and Ji Tang’s black long-sleeved shirt tangled together. As they fell, Ji Tang instinctively grabbed Song Xun’s clothes, but was pulled deeper into her embrace by her strong, lean arms.
Ji Tang’s figure was full and curvy, but she was a bit shorter than Song Xun and could be easily held in her arms.
The next second, eager, warm lips pressed against hers, crushing her just-returned reason. Their lips and teeth met, chasing and tangling, endlessly.
It wasn’t until even the thin air was used up that Song Xun released her. Taking advantage of the moment when the person beneath her was panting, her mind dazed, and her body weak, she quickly lowered her head again to kiss Ji Tang’s slender white neck and collarbone.
Kissing, pressing, sucking.
The stinging pain completely woke her gradually returning reason. Ji Tang frowned slightly, panting as she reached out to push away the head buried in her heaving chest.
“No, Song Xun, get up…”
But her fingers were weak, and even her pushing seemed hesitant. Outside the tent, she could faintly hear the sound effects of Shi Tou’s game. Not far away was another tent where Ji Chao was resting.
A sense of shame, excitement, and unease made Ji Tang’s face flush.
But, how could she… here?
