009 Stupid Snake
The water’s surface rippled abnormally.
Yu Chujin’s hair-scrubbing motions paused as she looked towards the source of the ripples.
Yu Chujin’s pupils constricted slightly. It was a large fish, a full half-arm’s length!
She instantly slowed her breathing, not daring to make any large movements for fear of scaring the fish away. She moved cautiously, slowly approaching the large fish.
Staring at the fish, she focused intently and then lunged forward, pouncing on it.
Water splashed half a meter high.
She made a huge commotion, but there was nothing beneath her. The fish had darted away.
Watching the fish escape, she sighed in disappointment. As expected, with her rookie skills, even if a fish was served up right in front of her, catching it was practically a fool’s dream.
After two seconds of disappointment, she suddenly remembered the large snake. That big fellow was fast; it must be a master at catching fish. She should just ask it to help her catch one.
She turned to look at the large snake on the shore.
Just as she was about to ask the large snake for help in catching the fish, before the words could leave her mouth, she witnessed the large snake slowly slithering towards where her clothes were placed.
Yu Chujin’s expression froze. The fish was no longer important. She shouted in a panic, “Hey, what are you doing? Don’t touch my clothes.”
The large snake had already reached her clothes. First, it nudged them with its mouth, then it pawed at them with its small claws.
A small doubt formed in its large head. Is this the two-legged creature’s skin? It has the two-legged creature’s scent. Hmm, that’s right, this is her skin.
“I’ll get angry if you touch my clothes, I’ll really get angry. I’ll hit you with a rock, believe it or not!” Yu Chujin threatened loudly.
Her clothes were all she had. If they were gone, she’d have to go naked. She was terrified that this husky-snake would tear her clothes apart just like it had dismantled her shelter.
The shelter could be rebuilt, but if her clothes were gone, they were gone for good.
The large snake, usually so sharp-eared, was now acting as if it were deaf. It completely ignored her, engrossed in studying her clothes.
Yu Chujin was frantic and hurriedly ran back to the shore.
Just as she reached the shore, she saw the large snake lift her clothes and stuff its head into the T-shirt.
Yu Chujin: “?”
Could it be… that it’s imitating a person wearing clothes?
Did the copycat snake see Yu Chujin wearing clothes and want to try wearing them too?
But clearly, it had no self-awareness. It couldn’t judge how large its body was or whether it could fit into this T-shirt.
Sure enough, the T-shirt was too small, and its head was too big. It got stuck as soon as it covered its eyes.
In an instant, the whole world went dark. The large snake panicked, became frightened, and started shaking its head frantically.
After shaking its head a dozen times, it still couldn’t shake off the T-shirt covering its head. It grew more and more anxious, and its head-shaking became more and more violent. Yu Chujin was afraid it would give itself a concussion.
As it shook its head, it twisted its body wildly, kicking up dust.
Yu Chujin’s mouth twitched. This stupid snake was really an eye-opener.
She waved away the dust in front of her and said helplessly, “Alright, stop shaking. Calm down. I’ll help you get it off.”
Hearing Yu Chujin’s voice, the large snake’s movements stopped, and it instantly became quiet.
“Hiss hiss.”
Yu Chujin raised an eyebrow, slightly surprised.
Even with its head covered, in such a panicked state, it still didn’t forget to hiss in response.
“I’m coming over now. I’ll help you get it off. Don’t shake around. If you accidentally hit me, with your big frame, you could send me flying three meters. Do you hear me? Don’t move.”
Seeing that the large snake had no intention of moving, Yu Chujin cautiously walked over, carefully pinched both sides of the T-shirt, and then cautiously gave it a tug.
The force was too small; she couldn’t pull it off. “I’m going to pull hard now. Don’t get stressed. You absolutely cannot shake me.”
Yu Chujin warned it repeatedly, but thankfully, the large snake remained motionless, very obedient.
Gritting her teeth, she gave a strong pull. With a pop, she successfully pulled the T-shirt off the snake’s head.
The large snake saw the light again. It was stunned for a moment, then became excited.
Its eyes shone brightly as it looked at Yu Chujin, and it happily circled around her.
The skinless two-legged creature was so white. The large snake curiously looked her up and down.
Yu Chujin had no time to care what the snake was thinking. The first thing she did was check if the T-shirt was damaged. This was her only piece of clothing.
Thankfully, the fabric was quite elastic and hadn’t torn. It was still wearable.
The large snake continued to circle Yu Chujin, its long tail trapping her in a small space.
Being surrounded by a long, thick tail was very oppressive and intimidating. Yu Chujin unconsciously tensed up, her hand holding the clothes tightening slightly.
But thankfully, the large snake was only excited and curious for a short while. It soon retracted its tail and stopped circling her.
Yu Chujin silently breathed a sigh of relief.
Although Yu Chujin often called it a stupid snake and acted very arrogant, in reality, she was still occasionally afraid of it. It was impossible to be completely unafraid of such a large creature.
After this ordeal, she was no longer in the mood to continue bathing. She put on the T-shirt and found that it was a size larger, having been stretched out by the large snake’s head.
She lowered her head and sniffed it. It had a grassy scent.
It was the large snake’s scent.
Yu Chujin had always been puzzled. Why did a giant python smell like fresh grass? It wasn’t a herbivore, so how could it have a grassy scent?
And that wasn’t the only strange thing about this large snake. She had never seen a snake that ate coconuts and nectarines, or one that liked to play with humans…
It also had claws, two very nimble little claws, and a row of neat teeth. Just now, when she was helping it take off the T-shirt, she had accidentally discovered that it had two very small ears on its head.
It was a strangely shaped snake. If you said it wasn’t a snake, it was a snake. If you said it was a snake, it didn’t quite look like one.
Very strange.
“Are you a rare animal? I’ve never seen your type of snake before.”
“Or are you a new species that has never been discovered?”
It tilted its head, its small ears twitching.
Yu Chujin noticed that every time she spoke, the large snake would tilt its head as if it were listening intently.
But clearly, it couldn’t understand.
It couldn’t understand, yet it listened very seriously, as if it deserved credit for its effort even if it didn’t achieve anything.
“You listen so seriously, you’re quite polite,” Yu Chujin said thoughtfully. “What kind of snake are you? I’ve never seen a snake like you. Wait, you can’t be a legendary dragon, can you!”
“Hiss hiss.”
“Alright, dragons probably don’t flick their tongues and hiss. Only snakes do that. And dragons probably aren’t as ugly as you. You’re very ugly.”
“Hiss hiss.”
Yu Chujin sighed, “What’s the point of thinking so much? Even if you were a monster, so what? You can’t fly and take me away from this godforsaken place.”
The large snake: “Hiss hiss.”
Speaking of which, Yu Chujin suddenly began to observe the large snake, “You don’t really have wings and can fly, do you? Let me see, let me take a closer look.”
She circled the snake and looked at it carefully. Good, no wings.
That made sense. If it really had wings and could fly, it might really be a monster.
Perhaps because Yu Chujin was staring at it too intently, the large snake became coy again. It coiled its tail, blinked its eyes, and peeked at her, revealing a shy little expression.
Yu Chujin: “…”
“Alright, I’ll stop staring at you. Don’t make such strange expressions.”
“Hiss hiss.”
Yu Chujin ran her fingers through her wet hair. “Speaking of which, how long have you lived in this place? Have you been on this island since you were born?”
The large snake responded to every sentence, “Hiss hiss.”
“Do you have any of your own kind? Your kind doesn’t eat people, do they? If they do, don’t bring them over. Forget it, even if they don’t eat people, don’t bring them over. You’re scary-looking, and your kind is probably ugly too.”
“Hiss hiss.”
“It’s a good thing you can’t understand. Otherwise, if I kept calling you ugly, you’d get angry with me.”
“Hiss hiss.”
They couldn’t understand each other’s language, but back and forth, they managed to “chat.”
“I’m so hungry. I saw a fish when I was bathing just now, but I couldn’t catch it. Why don’t you go catch it for me?”
“Hiss hiss.”
“Don’t just hiss. A fish, a fish that swims in the water,” Yu Chujin said, gesturing to make it understand. “That’s edible. A fish, a swimming fish. Catch it, bring it to me.”
After half a day of communication… her temper flared.
“Stupid snake! You’re so stupid!”
The large snake grinned happily, showing its large white teeth.
Yu Chujin facepalmed.
Eating only coconuts and nectarines wasn’t filling at all. After three days of it, her body couldn’t take it anymore. The hunger made her feel weak and powerless.
If she still couldn’t start a fire, she might really have to eat raw meat.
Of course, before deciding to eat raw meat, she had to at least make this silly snake understand her meaning and get it to hunt for food.
Yu Chujin continued to try to communicate with it.
“Fish, help me catch a fish.” She imitated a fish swimming in the water, her body twisting and turning.
The large snake stared at the two-legged creature for a while, its clever brain turned, and it immediately imitated Yu Chujin’s movements, starting to twist and turn on the sand.
Yu Chujin took two steps back, “What are you twisting for? Are you crazy?”
The large snake stopped twisting, straightened its body, its small claws on the ground, its eyes shining brightly at her, its tail wagging, a look of seeking praise on its face.
Yu Chujin was silent. Did it want her to praise it for twisting so beautifully on the ground?
“You stupid snake, you can leave now. I see you won’t be satisfied until you’ve angered me to death.”
Not receiving praise, the large snake’s tail stopped wagging. It pulled a long face, looking aggrieved.
When Yu Chujin gave up communicating with it, the large snake went out to hunt. Although it didn’t go to catch fish, it darted into the forest.
The large snake never seemed to go into the water. It always stayed on the shore. When she went into the water to bathe, it didn’t follow. Could it be that it couldn’t swim?
Perhaps. Anyway, it was just a strange snake that couldn’t be judged by common sense.
This time, Yu Chujin didn’t panic because the large snake left. Because before it left, it had poked her with its tail.
At first, she didn’t understand what it meant, until the large snake hissed twice, first walking to the edge of the forest, then coming back, then walking to the edge of the forest again, then coming back again.
It went back and forth like this several times.
“What are you doing, going back and forth like that?” Her words paused for two seconds, and she asked tentatively, “Are you going hunting?”
“Hiss hiss.”
Yu Chujin’s eyebrows raised slightly. Could it be that the last two times it had left without saying goodbye to hunt, it had understood her complaints?
Because it understood, it would tell her in advance before going hunting this time?
Who said this snake was stupid? Sometimes it was quite smart… and quite considerate.
Half an hour later, the large snake returned. This time, it had hunted a chicken.
Chicken was good. Even without seasoning, a beggar’s chicken would be delicious.
Provided there was fire.
Yu Chujin had tried to drill wood for fire several times, but each time, she had failed.
The closest she had gotten was a little bit of smoke from the tinder, but that little bit of smoke had quickly died out.
In the process, Yu Chujin had lost her temper countless times. She was not a good-tempered or patient person to begin with.
Whenever she lost her temper, she would kick away the fire-starting tools.
The large snake would watch from the side each time, and then, it would use its tail to pick up the tools she had kicked away, arrange them neatly, and place them at Yu Chujin’s feet.
The large snake seemed to know that even if Yu Chujin kicked these things away now, she would have to pick them up later. After all, she had repeated this action countless times.
She would throw everything away when she was angry, and then silently pick them up when she had calmed down.
The large snake had witnessed this several times, so it naturally understood. Therefore, the moment Yu Chujin threw things away, the large snake would immediately pick them up.
After picking them up, its small claws would stomp on the ground, and its tail would wag, as if waiting for praise.
Yu Chujin was furious. She would even scold a passing dog. The large snake was also oblivious and walked right into the line of fire.
“You stupid snake, why can’t you breathe fire? If you could breathe fire, would I have to go through all this trouble? It’s all your fault, it’s all your fault.”
After a few days in this environment, she was a bit crazy, being unreasonable.
The large snake shook its head, cheerful.
“I’m scolding you, what are you so happy about? Stupid snake.”
“Hiss hiss.”
“Stupid snake.”
“Hiss hiss.”
After venting her emotions for a while, she felt a little guilty looking at the silly large snake. “Alright, alright, I shouldn’t always scold you. Although you’re stupid, you’re barely cute in a stupid way.”
The tail behind the large snake wagged.
Yu Chujin glanced at its tail. Why was it really like a dog, wagging its tail when it was happy?
Perhaps, she could also pat it like a dog?
She was a little tempted.
This wasn’t the first time this thought had crossed Yu Chujin’s mind. She had wanted to pat it several times before, but there was always a little bit of fear, so she had never put it into action.
After a few days of contact, Yu Chujin’s courage had grown. Mainly because it really was like an obedient dog. And it was precisely because it was like an obedient dog that Yu Chujin wanted to pat its head.
She mustered her courage and tentatively reached out her hand.
The large snake stared at her outstretched hand, its large, innocent eyes showing confusion.
Halfway there, her hand stopped. She warned it in advance, “A pat is an expression of affection. You can’t bite me.”
The large snake thought for two seconds, understood, opened its large mouth, and bit down on her outstretched hand.
