Chapter 94: I Love Slacking Off
The ship, having separated from the main fleet, arrived at the “Oasis” jump point that afternoon. Half an hour after the announcement, the Silver Ship officially entered “Oasis.”
Everyone on board breathed a sigh of relief. Passing through Oasis meant they were closer to the First Star System.
The atmosphere within the Silver Ship, no longer as tense as before, lightened considerably. People even discussed what they would do after returning to the First Star System.
Three hours later, the Silver Ship safely traversed “Oasis,” emerging at the edge of the Fourth Star System, about to enter its territory.
Just as everyone truly relaxed, the Silver Ship came under attack.
“What’s happening?!”
“Where’s the attack coming from?”
“Reporting, sir, our energy compartment has been hit! We must land within half an hour!”
To the bridge crew’s shock, the attack came from behind.
“Did they silently follow us all the way, waiting to ambush us as we were leaving Oasis?”
“No, they couldn’t have followed us all this way, we would have detected them.”
This thought made everyone’s hearts sink.
If they hadn’t been following, there was only one other possibility: the attackers had been lying in wait, anticipating the Silver Ship’s emergence, ready to reap the benefits.
A massive ship, hidden at the exit, gradually revealed itself, aiming its cannons at the Silver Ship, the charging energy reflected in the eyes of the bridge crew.
At the same time, the symbol on the massive ship came into view. A one-eyed white bird on the corner of the black hull, a symbol almost everyone in the Federation recognized.
Someone’s fingers flew across the virtual console, activating the Silver Ship’s shields, while another person stared in disbelief, shouting the name that shouldn’t have appeared here: “It’s…it’s the White Ravens! How are they here?!”
“Isn’t Oasis a Federation-controlled jump point? Why are the White Ravens here?”
Unfortunately, no one could answer him.
The White Ravens’ cannons were charged and fired.
The Silver Ship, with its crew of only a dozen or so, was no match for the White Raven ship, which was hundreds of times larger. Not even a god could change that.
Within half an hour, the Silver Ship, having barely managed to send out a distress signal, was breached, and the White Ravens swarmed in.
Urgent alarms blared throughout the Silver Ship, red lights flashing, everything terrifying.
The tremors naturally affected the interior of the ship, and everyone was in danger.
Amidst the sloshing water, Callista was knocked off her pebble bed, her sleepy eyes snapping open, her ear fins twitching, instantly alert.
She wasn’t alerted by the continuous tremors, but by someone violently trying to break down the locked door.
The door’s sturdiness seemed to pique the intruder’s interest, the banging growing louder until it finally burst open.
Several people rushed in, their appearances varied, but their expressions were uniformly foolish.
They had heard of the Mermaid’s legendary beauty, and seeing her now, she indeed lived up to the rumors, even exceeding them.
One of them couldn’t tear his eyes away from the figure behind the glass, his jaw dropping in awe before he turned and shouted, “Come look, the Mermaid is really here!”
As expected, his shout attracted more people, who gathered around, chattering excitedly.
Callista understood every word, even their discussions about treating her like a fish on a chopping block, ready to be carved up at will.
Callista remained silent, her eyes lowered coldly, her claws extending behind her back.
The White Ravens outside the glass didn’t know she was the leader of the Mermaid tribe, captivated by her delicate beauty, naturally classifying her as a fragile flower.
So, someone said, “We’ve been in here for a while, why hasn’t she reacted? Is she scared?”
Hearing this, they all burst into laughter.
Half an hour earlier, when the Silver Ship was first attacked, Tao Ning woke up.
She hadn’t slept all night, having used her psychic power to resist Callista’s allure before the jump, and she was inevitably tired.
Recalling the scene, after confessing her feelings according to Callista’s wishes, the Mermaid had once again retreated underwater.
No matter what she said, she couldn’t coax her out, so Tao Ning left the room with the fist-sized pearl to rest.
The pearl was too big, even ground into powder, it would be enough to choke someone. Unable to find a place to put it, Tao Ning stored it in her space button.
She wasn’t sure of Callista’s psychic level, but it was definitely high, considering she had become the leader of her tribe at such a young age. Resisting her psychic power wasn’t easy.
As the aftershocks of the attack on the Silver Ship continued, Tao Ning, who had fallen asleep fully clothed, suddenly sat up, sensing something was wrong.
This attack was clearly beyond the Silver Ship’s capacity, and there was a real possibility of it being sunk.
Outside her room, red lights flashed everywhere, causing panic.
Tao Ning’s expression remained calm, but the unease in her heart grew stronger. She strode down the corridor, deep in thought.
If this was the scale of the attack, it was different from what was recorded in the original world line. Gu Yuan wouldn’t be able to turn the tide, even if his psychic power exploded and he fought ten men at once.
The opponent could simply obliterate him with overwhelming force.
To put it simply, destroying the Silver Ship was as easy as swatting a fly for them.
After much thought, Tao Ning couldn’t figure out the variable, but her priority was to find Lita.
Lest the Mermaid be stolen while she was asleep.
Hurried footsteps mixed with the blaring alarms, raising her heart rate.
Turning a corner, she unexpectedly ran into Song Fangzhou, who had rushed over, worried about Tao Ning’s safety.
Seeing Zang Yuzhu unharmed, Song Fangzhou’s heart relaxed slightly. She called out, “Someone is attacking the Silver Ship! I’ve already informed my aunt, she…”
Tao Ning suddenly shouted, “Get down!” Flicking her wrist, she threw her butterfly knife towards Song Fangzhou.
Song Fangzhou, accustomed to training, instinctively obeyed the command.
The polished floor reflected Song Fangzhou’s puzzled expression. She wondered: Why should I get down?
A muffled groan came from behind, followed by the heavy thud of a body hitting the ground. The scent of blood filled the air.
Still crouching, she turned around to see a person lying three steps away from her, a silver butterfly knife embedded in their throat, the blade sunk deep, blood gushing out.
The person died too quickly, the surprise still frozen on their face.
Killed instantly, without a chance to resist.
Song Fangzhou’s heart pounded. She had been so focused on running here, her hearing obscured by the alarms, that she hadn’t noticed the space pirate following her.
But what surprised her even more was that there was more than one person behind her.
The other person, a few steps behind, seeing their companion killed, froze for a second before lunging at her with a ferocious expression.
Song Fangzhou rolled on the ground, dodging the attack, then jumped up, ready to counterattack.
A figure flashed past her, using the wall for leverage, leaping into the air, kicking the attacker’s neck, then pressing down, her knee on the attacker’s throat.
Without waiting for a plea for mercy, Tao Ning pressed down hard.
A sickening crack echoed as bones dislocated, and the space pirate instantly died, their raised hand falling back to the ground.
Song Fangzhou: “…”
Standing up unsteadily, Song Fangzhou looked at Zang Yuzhu’s slender back with unfamiliar eyes, feeling like she was seeing her for the first time.
The Zang Yuzhu in her memory was clumsy, weak, the infamous “off-target master” of the Command Department, and wouldn’t know such moves.
But this Zang Yuzhu ignited a fire in Song Fangzhou’s heart. If there had been a mirror, she would have seen a fervent, almost obsessive, look in her own eyes.
Confirming the person was dead, Tao Ning stood up, tossing her loose hair behind her back.
Her hair tie had fallen off during the fight, her long hair cascading down her back, not diminishing her cold demeanor.
Tao Ning said, “As you can see, the Silver Ship has been compromised. Someone betrayed our coordinates. Who do you think it was?”
Song Fangzhou was about to answer when she suddenly shouted, “Watch out!”
But it was too late. A cold blade was already at Tao Ning’s neck, a hair’s breadth away from slicing her throat.
A casual female voice, laced with menace, sounded: “Now, little girl, don’t move, or your pretty face will be scarred, and that would be a shame.”
Tao Ning froze, her back to the attacker, slowly raising her hands.
She didn’t move, not because she couldn’t subdue the person behind her, but because the attacker had brought reinforcements, surrounding them.
Even if she wanted to escape, it would take considerable effort, and after seeing their insignia, she was even less inclined to resist.
It was like a dream come true. She had been wondering where to find evidence, and now it was delivered right to her doorstep.
These were members of the White Raven organization, and they were here for the Mermaid on the Silver Ship.
The person threatening her didn’t know what was going through the seemingly weak young woman’s mind in such a short time, assuming Tao Ning was simply scared.
A slight smile curved her lips as Tu Xin said, “You’re very sensible. I appreciate obedient and clever young people like you.”
Her tone turned cold: “Turn around, let me see what the person who killed two of my men looks like.”
As she spoke, the blade pressed closer to Tao Ning’s neck, slicing off a strand of hair, a thin line of blood appearing on her pale skin.
Song Fangzhou’s expression tightened, her lips pressed together.
Tu Xin, noticing the change in her expression, chuckled: “You seem very concerned about her. Now I’m even more curious about what you look like.”
She was clearly someone whose moods changed quickly, unpredictable and volatile.
Tao Ning turned around, facing a beautiful face, as striking as a colorful venomous snake.
The only flaw was the black eye patch covering her left eye, beneath which one could vaguely see the scarred and shrunken skin from a burn.
Compared to her perfectly shaped right eye, the scar beneath the eye patch was even more hideous.
After a single glance, Tao Ning lowered her gaze, avoiding eye contact.
Seeing the damaged left eye, Tao Ning understood her volatile temper. Born with such beauty, only to be disfigured, facing her flawed reflection every day, it was no wonder she became twisted.
Tu Xin’s one good eye narrowed: “You look…familiar.”
Tao Ning felt the blade press harder against her neck and could only say, “Many people say I have a common face, that I look like everyone else.”
The pressure on her neck eased, the cold blade now against her chin, lifting slightly to expose her face.
Tu Xin narrowed her eyes, scrutinizing her features.
An old injury had impaired her vision, making it difficult to see clearly. The face before her always seemed to be covered in a faint white mist, so she relied more on voices to recognize people.
“Sister Tu, we’ve taken care of the others…” A voice came from behind, accompanied by approaching footsteps, the sound of heavy boots growing louder.
He glanced at them and said, “You found Zang Yuzhu so quickly? Sister Tu, didn’t you say you wanted to torture her slowly? You’re killing her now?”
Tu Xin’s grip on the dagger tightened. She asked, “You’re Zang Yuzhu?”
Her casual tone turned harsh and low. Whether Tao Ning confirmed or denied, the outcome would be the same, so she nodded: “Yes.”
Tu Xin scrutinized her face even more closely, then sheathed her dagger, saying cryptically, “You look just like Jiao Shu Jun, even more so when you’re silent, equally detestable.”
As she uttered the word “detestable,” Tu Xin suddenly moved, stabbing the dagger into Tao Ning’s shoulder.
Song Fangzhou’s expression turned anxious: “You…!”
But she couldn’t move. A gun was pressed against her lower back, and she knew the person’s finger was on the trigger, ready to fire if she made any sudden movements.
As expected, the person behind her pressed harder, threatening, “Stay still if you want to live!”
The white cloth on Tao Ning’s shoulder was stained with blood, small spots of red blooming on her shirt.
Tu Xin pulled out the dagger, blood dripping from the blade like plum blossoms on snow.
Tu Xin admired the scene for a moment before saying, “Jiao Shu Jun probably never imagined that her precious daughter would fall into my hands. It’s a shame she died too quickly, I couldn’t even find her body in the wreckage to desecrate.”
Jiao Shu Jun was the name of Zang Yuzhu’s biological mother. Before being injured and transferring to a civilian position, she had been a key figure on the Ninth Star System battlefield. If it weren’t for the damage to her psychic sea, preventing her from piloting advanced mecha, she would have achieved a higher rank.
Tao Ning clutched her shoulder, remaining silent, not bothering to explain that everyone said Zang Yuzhu looked more like her father, Zang Xin.
This person had a grudge against Zang Yuzhu’s mother, a hatred possibly related to her eye injury. Saying anything now would only enrage her.
Tu Xin said, “Don’t be silent, you’re even more like Jiao Shu Jun when you’re silent, and that angers me.”
Tao Ning moved her pale lips: “You flatter me. Even my breathing probably annoys you.”
Who let her be Zang Yuzhu, and the person before her happen to be her mother’s enemy?
She could kill one person, or even a dozen, but she couldn’t kill dozens of people on the ship by herself, and it could easily escalate into mutual destruction, endangering Lita.
Besides, she wasn’t good at fighting.
Hearing this, Tu Xin burst into laughter: “It seems you’re not stupid, you understand the situation.”
Her laughter wasn’t unpleasant, but it sent chills down one’s spine, like a colorful venomous snake in a rainforest, coiled around a branch, flicking its tongue.
The other White Ravens were used to it. Their second-in-command had always been like this.
Song Fangzhou’s face paled slightly.
She came from the Song family, almost everyone in her family serving in the military. She hadn’t grown up sheltered.
However, Song Fangzhou had only ever encountered decent people. Her family background was her natural shield, and she had rarely faced danger. She had never met someone like Tu Xin before.
Although Tu Xin was smiling, her eyes were cold: “I’m sure you know what’s going to happen to you. Take her away. Let’s entertain her with the organization’s new toys. I’ll deal with her personally when I’m in the mood.”
The last sentence was directed at her subordinates, who moved to grab Tao Ning’s arm, but missed.
Tao Ning clutched her shoulder, her face pale, and said, “Don’t worry, I can walk. No need to bother.”
She walked directly towards Tu Xin’s subordinate, who, along with their companion, led her away with a mixture of curiosity and amusement.
Before leaving, Tao Ning glanced at Song Fangzhou, and this single glance calmed her down slightly.
Tu Xin pointed at Song Fangzhou: “As for this one…”
She was about to say “dispose of her as you see fit” when someone called out, “Sister Tu,” and whispered something in her ear.
This made Tu Xin change her mind. She said casually, “How troublesome, just lock her up then.”
