Chapter 109: Twenty-One

Lin Zixi busied herself at the computer for a little longer until around ten o’clock. Then she got up to wash up and lay in bed, flipping open her e-reader as she waited for Ye Can to return.

A full round of mahjong took quite a bit of time. But usually, by around eleven-thirty, Ye Can would come back. If she was beaming with joy, her eyes dancing with excitement, then she’d definitely won big today. If she came back with a furrowed brow, looking unhappy, she’d probably lost badly.

Ever since Ye Can had started self-teaching mahjong, she’d won far less often than she lost. Lin Zixi flipped through her book for a bit on the bed, her attention drifting multiple times to check the time. She even wondered in her mind whether Ye Can had won or lost this time—and what expression she’d have when she got back.

Thinking about it too much, she couldn’t help but feel a twinge of regret. She should’ve gone out to take a look earlier.

But this was on set. Even if everyone guessed at their relationship—or even knew it deep down—Lin Zixi couldn’t openly expose her romance with Ye Can.

Just like with today’s incident; there was no way Lin Zixi could step up personally and say, “Stop staring at how Ye Can and Meng Zhiqiu are wearing matching outfits—Ye Can was holding my hand when she ran off.”

And the wound on Ye Can’s lip? That was from her bite.

For Lin Zixi, dating an actress whose career was on the rise felt pretty thrilling. There were so many clues between them for people to scrutinize endlessly, uncovering “evidence” amid the mix of truth and lies, where a secret, brilliant flower bloomed.

Sometimes, Lin Zixi savored the thrill of monopolizing Ye Can while hiding it from everyone. But other times, she itched to announce to the world just how wonderful Ye Can was, what an amazing lover she made.

Maybe this urge to flaunt what I have is just some innate flaw of mine, Lin Zixi thought.

But the rationality honed over years wouldn’t let her act on it. For the sake of protecting Ye Can’s career, neither now nor in the future could she ever go public with their relationship.

Every love story was like this, really. From start to finish, only the two leads knew every detail crystal clear. Outsiders glimpsed maybe a ten-thousandth of it.

If one day the memories of this love faded with time, then so be it—they’d be forgotten.

Maybe the only way to hold onto these little moments is to write them down.

But memories warped or altered over time, and writing could lose authenticity through self-beautification. In the end, only the present moment was truly real.

Even as Lin Zixi convinced herself of this, the thought nagged at her. She couldn’t resist jumping out of bed, opening her computer, and uploading all the email documents chronicling Ye Can’s recent life to the cloud—just in case the hard drive failed and she lost everything.

It wasn’t much, but it still took a little time. By the time Ye Can returned from outside, Lin Zixi hadn’t finished syncing the files.

With a soft click, Ye Can gently closed the door behind her. Seeing Lin Zixi still at the computer, she looked surprised. “Why aren’t you in bed yet? What are you still working on? Writing a script?”

Lin Zixi felt a pang of guilt and instinctively covered her laptop with her hand, nodding. “Yeah, some inspiration hit. Thinking of writing a script in my spare time.”

Ye Can’s eyes lit up instantly. “What genre? How much have you written?”

She hurried to Lin Zixi’s side, leaning in to peek. “Can I see?”

Lin Zixi pressed a finger to her forehead and shook her head. “No.” Ye Can blinked her big eyes, puzzled. “Why? Because it’s not done?”

Lin Zixi nodded with a soft sigh. “Yeah.”

Ye Can nodded in understanding, straightening up. “Alright then. Show me when it’s finished.” She headed to the dressing area, grabbed her pajamas, and made for the bathroom.

Lin Zixi sneaked a glance at the still-syncing email, confirming Ye Can hadn’t seen the dated files. She let out a breath of relief.

Twisting around, she watched Ye Can’s back as she headed to the bathroom. “How’d it go today?”

Ye Can didn’t close the bathroom door. Soon, the sound of running water filled the air. Raising her voice a bit, Ye Can grumbled, “Talking about that’s no fun.”

Hearing that, Lin Zixi instantly knew the night’s battle hadn’t gone well. She glanced toward the bathroom, eyes curving into a smile. “So you’ll have to wash Jiang Yue’s clothes again tomorrow?”

Ye Can shut off the shower, huffing indignantly. “I’m not washing for her! I switched opponents today!”

Lin Zixi found her endlessly amusing and couldn’t resist teasing. “Yeah, switched opponents and still lost.”

That sounded infuriating. Ye Can lathered her hair, letting out a soft humph. “Whatever, I’m not arguing with you.”

Through the frosted glass door several meters away, with her back to Lin Zixi, Ye Can started muttering. “By the way, if you’re starting to write scripts now, write as many as you can. You don’t have to handle all my work stuff anymore.”

Ye Can had no personal assistant; Lin Zixi, her manager on set, doubled as one. That meant Lin Zixi handled everything from work to daily life for her.

Lin Zixi was a bit surprised. “Why do you say that?”

Ye Can shared her thoughts. “Because I can tell you like writing stories. These past six months on set with me, you haven’t been writing properly. Sure, having you as my manager was selfish of me at first.”

“But now that we’re… like this, there’s no need for my stuff to weigh on you.”

“Leave that to professionals.”

Lin Zixi schooled her smile, gazing at the silhouette on the frosted glass. “You saying I’m not professional?” Does Ye Can want a full professional team now?

Ye Can turned off the shower and poked her head out, foam crowning her hair, grinning at Lin Zixi. “Mad already? You know that’s not what I mean.”

Lin Zixi eyed her bare, pale shoulders and the foam, facepalming. “Be careful—foam on the floor gets filthy. Just take your shower properly.”

Ye Can mumbled an “oh,” but didn’t retreat. “But seriously, from now on, you keep the manager title and hang out on set with me. Let Tong Lin be my personal assistant, and we’ll hire a work manager. That way you’re not exhausted, and you can focus on hanging with me.”

She blinked, face pleading for approval. Lin Zixi huffed. “Hiring another manager isn’t free, you know.”

Ye Can leaned against the doorframe, gazing at her with puppy-dog eyes. “I’ve got money. I asked Ye Shen today—I’ve got tons of assets.” Ye Can wasn’t sure if they’d hold after she left, but for now, they were usable.

Actually, after hearing about the scandal with Meng Zhiqiu from Jiang Yue today, Ye Can had been mulling this over. If Lin Zixi stayed her full-time manager, she’d inevitably deal with all the rumors and scandals.

She only has three years left to live. Why make Lin Zixi worry over others’ opinions? Can’t she just act while treating Lin Zixi to fun and food?

No hope anyway—might as well live it up.

Ye Can looked at Lin Zixi and smiled. “With a proxy manager handling PR and future plans, I’ll focus on acting, you’ll stay by my side, and write scripts in downtime. We do what we love—how’s that?”

Lin Zixi rested her hands on her knees. “You’re serious?”

Ye Can nodded. “Dead serious. I don’t want you worn out, don’t want you seeing my scandals. I want you doing what you love, and I’ll do my best to join you. Anything disrupting us? Pay others to handle it.”

“Otherwise, what’s all my money for?”

Lin Zixi couldn’t decide right away. “This… let me think.” She eyed Ye Can, still naked and draped over the door, and urged with a headache, “Okay, go finish your shower first. We can talk after.”

Ye Can huffed an “fine,” and scampered back to rinse off.

Once she was gone, Lin Zixi pondered the proposal.

Ye Can had always seemed so dependent on her that Lin Zixi had overlooked she was a top-tier heiress.

Now, Ye Can bringing up her assets—and contacting Ye Shen—did that mean their relationship had improved a lot?

Lin Zixi had to admit it was good, but it left her inexplicably uneasy.

Sure, the idea was tempting, but she couldn’t accept it yet. She mulled it over alone for a while. When Ye Can emerged from the bathroom, Lin Zixi grabbed the hairdryer, blow-drying as she asked, “Why this idea all of a sudden?”

Ye Can replied matter-of-factly. “Like I said—you won’t have time to write as my manager. All that mundane stuff keeps you from playing with me properly. Better hand it off.”

Lin Zixi was taken aback. “That’s it? No other reason?”

Ye Can shrugged nonchalantly. “What else? I just want you around. I’ve realized I don’t lack money—why not let us snag some peace amid the high-pressure work?”

“That’s it. Wherever I go, you come. No arguing.”

Lin Zixi wrapped Ye Can’s hair in a towel, looking down at her with an involuntary smile. “Ye Can, you know what this reminds me of?”

Ye Can nodded. “Yeah—the Faint Lord.”

She nailed her own explanation. “The kind who leaves state affairs to ministers and parties everywhere.”

Tilting her head up, Ye Can grinned smugly at Lin Zixi. “What, didn’t you know I’m a Faint Lord?”

She pinched Lin Zixi’s waist, pinning her beneath, eyes narrowing lazily. “My consort, life’s short—seize the day.”

After all, if she didn’t splurge now, it’d be too late for anything.
