Chapter 58: The Little Follower at the Aristocratic School (Part 7)

[Shock! It scared me so much my soul’s been floating all day! Today on the playground, I saw L carrying sk all the way to the infirmary. I’m done for—I feel like I’ll never have sk.]

1L: I saw it too, followed them the whole way. L is my goddess, but even L—I don’t want her taking sk!!!

2L: sk is my wife!!!

3L: sk must be sick. Her face was all red today, though it was super cute.

4L: This person is already at the infirmary, hehe.

Shen Ke lay on the bed. Her fever had completely subsided, but her body felt exhausted and limp. She didn’t want to move a muscle.

“Classmate, your hand is just scraped a bit. You can go.”

“Doctor, check again. My finger really hurts.”

The student seeking treatment was being a bit unreasonable. Shen Ke found it annoying. She sat up straight, frowning as she said, “Hey, the doctor said it’s fine, so it’s fine. Why don’t you scram already? You’re disturbing my rest.”

Shen Ke’s beautiful eyes widened in anger, her fury plain on her face.

From five to seven, students kept coming in for treatment, chattering noisily. She hadn’t gotten a good rest at all.

Stared down by Shen Ke, the student’s cheeks flushed red. They lowered their head and mumbled softly, “Sorry, I’ll go right now.”

Shen Ke huffed. “Scram already.” Sure enough, her intimidating presence was still strong.

Once the student left, Zhao Wanju rubbed her nose bridge. How could she not see why these students were coming here?

The moment everyone entered, their eyes scanned the room, searching for someone. When they spotted Shen Ke, their eyes lit up.

“Doctor Zhao, I’ve got it handled. Sorry for the trouble today,” said the replacement doctor, who had arrived two hours late, apologetically.

Zhao Wanju smiled. “No problem.” Having a little classmate with her today had made it bearable.

She walked over to Shen Ke. “Little classmate, try not to come to the infirmary so much. Being sick is no fun.”

Shen Ke glanced at Zhao Wanju and said seriously, “I’ll remember what you said today. You can’t trick me.”

Zhao Wanju chuckled helplessly. “Mm, sure.” So cute, just like her little sister.

Too bad her sister was forever frozen at seventeen.

Cancer was something even all the money in the world couldn’t cure.

Zhao Wanju left, leaving behind an unfamiliar doctor in the infirmary. Shen Ke puffed out her cheeks. With the doctor gone, no one was there to keep her company. And she still didn’t want to move. So annoying.

But Shen Ke’s annoyance didn’t last long.

Qi Yuan’s figure had appeared at the infirmary door without her noticing.

She seemed to have showered and changed clothes. She looked fresh and clean all over.

Qi Yuan walked up to Shen Ke and immediately reached out to touch her forehead. “No more fever. Does your body feel uncomfortable anywhere?”

She had timed it to match Shen Ke’s nap, figuring she might be awake by now, so she came over.

If she wasn’t awake, that was fine too. She could wait.

Shen Ke frowned irritably and smacked Qi Yuan’s hand away with a slap. “Who said you could touch me!”

Qi Yuan withdrew her hand, her expression unchanged. She picked up Shen Ke’s little leather shoes. “Want to go grab something to eat?”

“If you want to eat here, I’ll buy it for you. If you want to go out, I’ll carry you.”

Shen Ke was predictably derailed. She was a little hungry, actually.

The whole place reeked of disinfectant. No way was she eating here.

Shen Ke threw off the blanket, dangled her legs over the bed’s edge, and swung them. She put on a reluctant face. “Since you put it that way, carry me out to eat.”

“You made me hurt so much today. Serving me is the least you can do.”

“But don’t think this lets you off the hook. I’m no pushover.”

“Mm, you’re the worst.”

Qi Yuan’s voice was steady and firm, but Shen Ke found the words weird.

Qi Yuan half-squatted, gripping Shen Ke’s ankle with one hand and holding the shoe with the other. She slipped the high-heeled leather shoe onto Shen Ke’s foot.

Once both were on, Qi Yuan stood, went to the bathroom to wash her hands, then pulled out a wet wipe to clean Shen Ke’s face. Next, she tidied Shen Ke’s messy hair. Finally, she buttoned up Shen Ke’s open collar.

Qi Yuan’s movements were neat and efficient, quick as could be.

By the time Shen Ke snapped out of it, Qi Yuan was holding out her hands to her. “Come on up.”

Shen Ke’s mind went blank, her red lips parting. “You—”

Qi Yuan frowned slightly. “Did I do something wrong?”

Shen Ke’s lashes trembled. She pursed her lips. “You didn’t do anything wrong. I just think you’re pretty compliant.”

Qi Yuan’s lips curved gently, her smile fresh and clean. “After all, I did you wrong.”

Qi Yuan leaned in closer. “Let’s go.”

Shen Ke put on an enlightened look. Oh, so it was because Qi Yuan was too honest—that explained the compliance. With that thought, she instantly brushed off the weird feeling.

She reached out, wrapping her arms around Qi Yuan’s neck, and was scooped right into her embrace.

Same carry as in the warehouse today.

Shen Ke’s legs clamped around Qi Yuan’s waist. She rested her chin on Qi Yuan’s shoulder, sniffing the soap scent on her, and huffed lightly. “Qi Yuan, if you dare drop me again, you’re dead.”

Qi Yuan tightened the hand supporting Shen Ke’s thigh just a bit. Shen Ke’s weight was nothing to her—lighter than those logs.

Her other hand pressed against Shen Ke’s back. Shen Ke’s silky long hair draped over her hand, swaying with each step, brushing lightly against her skin and sending tingles of itchiness.

Qi Yuan exhaled deeply. “I won’t.” Some mistakes were regrettable enough after just once.

Qi Yuan hadn’t been gone long with Shen Ke when Lai Yi rushed in. Seeing the empty infirmary, she tossed the bouquet in her hand into the trash.

A shadow of gloom crossed her deep, chiseled features.

Looked like someone had beaten her to it. Seriously—why was she always one step behind?

After eating, Qi Yuan walked Shen Ke back to her dorm.

Just like the first time, Qi Yuan got a cold door slam in her face.

But this time, she didn’t frown. Her expression relaxed as she murmured softly to the icy door, “Sorry.”

Shen Ke was better the next day. During lunch break, she went looking for Si Qing again.

She still held a grudge against Si Qing for not caring about her at all, but she needed Si Qing’s influence, so she wasn’t about to hold it against her.

Shen Ke sighed inwardly at her own magnanimity. When she reached Si Qing’s lounge, she found the door ajar.

Shen Ke’s eyes darted. She pushed the door open just enough to peek inside with one eye.

Unexpectedly, there were two people inside. One was Si Qing, and the other was a short-haired girl she didn’t recognize.

Shen Ke froze for a moment. Si Qing was smiling.

But Si Qing hadn’t smiled at her in ages.

Shen Ke gripped the doorframe tightly. Could this be Si Qing’s new lackey?

The thought flashed through Shen Ke’s mind, but she dismissed it immediately. Si Qing didn’t like interacting with others. She preferred going solo.

But then Shen Ke saw Si Qing hand a black gem brooch to the girl—and she burst in.

Si Qing hadn’t expected Shen Ke to show up suddenly. She frowned slightly. “Shen Ke, is your fever gone?”

Shen Ke didn’t even hear her. Her eyes were wide, blazing with fury. She dropped all pretense of being sweet in front of Si Qing, pointed at the brooch in the girl’s hand, and snarled viciously, “Si Qing! Why are you giving that to her!”

“You said before it would only ever be for me!” Shen Ke was about to explode. She wasn’t mad at Si Qing breaking her word—she was mad that someone was trying to take her place!

Si Qing might ignore her, but she never interfered. Everyone knew Shen Ke was Si Qing’s one and only little follower. No one dared challenge her.

But now Si Qing had a new one. Everyone would think she’d been discarded.

With that in mind, Shen Ke couldn’t calm down. Her cheeks flushed bright red.

Si Qing pressed her temple. “Shen Ke, calm down.” She just wanted someone to keep an eye on Shen Ke. Her health was poor—if she got sick and Si Qing couldn’t get there in time…

Shen Ke was about to pass out from anger. Si Qing wanted her to calm down? How?!

Shen Ke’s voice rose, turning shrill. “Si Qing! I hate you! You said it was only for me.” By the end, her eyes were red.

I hate you. Those four words stabbed into Si Qing’s mind like needles, making her head buzz with pain. Yesterday too—saying she wouldn’t come find her anymore.

Hearing those words from Shen Ke’s mouth filled her with stifling frustration.

Si Qing stared at Shen Ke’s reddened eyes, her gaze turning cold. “Shen Ke, you hate me? You think I bullied you?”

Shen Ke bit her lower lip, tears welling up. “You did bully me!”

Si Qing’s eyes drooped. Her voice matched her gaze. She turned to the girl standing there at a loss. “You, go out first.”

The girl glanced at Shen Ke, nodded silently, but as she tried to leave, Shen Ke blocked her path.

Shen Ke glared at the brooch, snatched it, and smashed it to the ground. The sharp, crisp sound echoed through the room.

Tears spilled uncontrollably from Shen Ke’s eyes, wetting her pale cheeks. “This is mine. No one else can have it!”

Si Qing’s heart plummeted. She knew Shen Ke’s sweet act hid a temper, but she hadn’t expected it to be this willful.

The girl seemed frightened and bolted out in a panic.

A flash of smugness crossed Shen Ke’s face. She sniffled, turned to Si Qing, and grumbled, “Si Qing, I can forgive you this time, but you—”

“Shen Ke, have you caused enough trouble?” Si Qing’s indifferent words cut her off, cold as if surging from a glacial abyss, chilling to the bone.

Shen Ke met those pale eyes, her expression going blank. “Si Qing, w-what did you say?!”

Si Qing sat on the sofa, her eyes stripped of all emotion, like a jade statue. “I said, have you caused enough trouble?”

“Shen Ke, our relationship isn’t close enough for me to tolerate all your tantrums.”

“Didn’t you say yesterday you wouldn’t come find me anymore? Yet here you are today.”

“If you can’t let go of my background, then at least act better around me. I’m not your personal property.”

Once the words were out, there was no taking them back. By the time Si Qing realized she’d spoken in anger, it was too late.

Watching the tears streaming down Shen Ke’s face, Si Qing felt her heart tremble, suffocatingly painful.

Shen Ke was dizzy with rage. Humiliation and annoyance flooded her mind. Sure, she did hate to lose Si Qing’s status, but she’d always been good to Si Qing—never throwing tantrums in front of her.

Si Qing ignored her? She didn’t get mad. She kept talking to her anyway.

And now, just for chasing off one person, Si Qing said this.

Shen Ke’s cheeks burned red, grievance overwhelming her. She stood before Si Qing, frantically wiping her tears with the back of her hand, but they kept coming, impossible to dry.

“Si Qing, I hate you.” The words weren’t loud—barely a whisper, devoid of dramatic flair. Just a simple statement, laced with heavy sobs.

So soft, so light.

Yet to Si Qing, they roared like thunder, freezing her blood solid.

Shen Ke bit her lip hard, yanked off the black brooch she’d always worn, and hurled it at Si Qing. “I don’t want it anymore!” Worst case, she’d stop bullying others. Shen Ke never cursed even when furious—just endless tears that showed how angry and hurt she was.

The brooch hit Si Qing right over her heart, like a bullet piercing through, the pain excruciating.

Shen Ke left, tears streaming down her face.

Si Qing sat stunned on the sofa, mind blank. Clutching the brooch Shen Ke had worn, she suddenly started coughing violently.

One cough after another, leaving her dizzy and seeing stars.

What was she doing? She had just wanted someone to watch over Shen Ke properly—to make sure she got treatment in time if she fell ill.

Her emotions had swung too wildly. Si Qing’s vision went dark as consciousness slipped away.

Noah Academy didn’t have weekends off, but they got a week-long monthly break once a month.

Students could go home or stay on campus.

Shen Ke was stumped, though. She and Si Qing had fallen out.

Her parents had died young. She’d been living at Si Qing’s house all along.

Although Madam Si treated her very well, Shen Ke also understood that she wasn’t really part of the Si family, after all.

If Si Qing truly hated her that much, Madam Si would probably just tell her to stay away from Si Qing.

And right now, Si Qing seemed to hate her a lot.

A few days ago, after arguing with Si Qing, she had returned to the dorm alone, all teary-eyed. At the time, she was furious—furious that Si Qing could say such things about her. Sure, it might have been the truth, but it was still really upsetting.

But once her emotions settled, she realized she had been too impulsive.

No matter how angry she got, she shouldn’t have thrown the brooch back at him.

Shen Ke sat in her seat, propping her face up with her hand, her cheeks squished into a cute little pout.

The gazes around her kept drifting toward her subtly, but Shen Ke didn’t notice. She was wondering whether she should go apologize.

But what Si Qing had said that day was so harsh—she was still a bit mad about it.

Si Qing should be the one to apologize. But what if Si Qing didn’t?

Shen Ke furrowed her brows, her distress written all over her face. She really cared about Si Qing.

Shen Ke let go of her hand and rested her chin on the desk, staring blankly ahead with vacant eyes, completely oblivious to how adorable she looked.

She didn’t want to see Si Qing for the time being, so she couldn’t go back to the Si family. But she didn’t want to stay at school during the moon holiday either. So where could she go?

She had no friends and hadn’t been hanging out with her lackeys lately.

She only knew one person: Qi Yuan.

Qi Yuan—

In Class A of the second year, Qi Yuan packed up her books and stepped out of the classroom when suddenly a small figure threw herself into her arms.

The familiar fragrance filled her senses, and Qi Yuan couldn’t stop her lips from curving up—though she quickly hid the smile.

She looked down, her handsome features softening. “Shen Ke, are you here to bully me?”

Shen Ke lifted her head from Qi Yuan’s embrace. Fair skin, red lips, upturned eyes at the corners, and a small nose and chin. “I’m not bullying you.”

Qi Yuan’s hand couldn’t resist stroking Shen Ke’s long hair. From her downward view, Shen Ke looked even more like a cat—always staring up at you with those big eyes, both proud and spoiled.

Qi Yuan wondered if it was because she was so tall that Shen Ke looked extra cute whenever she tilted her head up to gaze at her.

Shen Ke had no idea what Qi Yuan was thinking. She grabbed the hand that had been petting her hair and tugged at it with both of hers.

She had no clue how Qi Yuan’s hands could be so much bigger than hers, even though they were both girls.

Shen Ke puffed out her cheeks and said spoiledly, “Hey, I’m coming to your house for the holiday.”
