“Dr. Xiong…”
Feng Yuxiao nodded, then suddenly seemed to remember something crucially important and smacked his forehead.
“Right! Miwan, since your hand has pretty much recovered and you can go back to training with the team, doesn’t that mean…”
“You don’t need to trouble Dr. Xiong anymore and can move back to your own place?”
The smile on Feng Miwan’s face froze.
Yeah… The reason she’d been staying there before was her right hand injury, making daily life inconvenient and needing someone to look after her.
Now that her hand was almost better and she could train on her own, it seemed like… she really didn’t have a reason to keep imposing on them.
“Mm…”
She nodded dazedly, a vague sense of loss suddenly surging in her heart.
“Yeah… I can move back.”
Feng Yuxiao didn’t notice his sister’s unusual mood and promptly started making arrangements:
“Alright, then I’ll contact a cleaning service right away to give your place a thorough cleanup and air it out.”
“You can head back home tonight? Do you have a lot of stuff? Want me to drive over and pick you up later?”
Feng Miwan: “Huh? Tonight… already?”
Feng Yuxiao gave her a strange look.
“What else?”
“It’s not good to keep troubling Dr. Xiong. Since you’re better, let her get back to her normal life sooner rather than later.”
“…Oh, yeah, you’re right.” Feng Miwan mumbled in response.
That evening, Feng Miwan returned to Xiong Yibai’s home.
Looking at this space where she’d lived for over half a month and grown gradually familiar with, that inexplicable emotion in her heart intensified.
She took a deep breath and began packing her not-too-abundant luggage using her left hand as much as possible.
After slowly packing the last piece of clothing and zipping up the suitcase, she suddenly remembered that Xiong Yibai was on night shift today.
“When she gets off work late and comes back… and finds I’ve left without a word… won’t she feel a bit… you know?”
She muttered softly to herself.
“No, no, Yibai doesn’t seem like the sentimental type. How could she care about something so minor? She might even be relieved to finally have some peace…”
But… what if?
What if she’d actually grown a little used to having someone else at home?
What if she thought it was rude of Feng Miwan to leave without saying goodbye?
Maybe… she should wait for her to come back, say hello in person, and then leave?
Feng Miwan fell into hesitation again.
Habitually, she pulled out that coin from her pocket.
“Alright, old rules.”
“Heads, I wait for her to come back and thank her in person before leaving. Tails, I send her a message and head straight home.”
She placed the coin on her left thumb and flicked it upward.
The silver coin spun in the air, and this time, Feng Miwan didn’t even realize that her heart was strongly hoping for a certain outcome.
“Pa!”
The coin landed in her palm, and she quickly pressed it down.
She slowly lifted her hand—
It was heads!
Feng Miwan’s eyes lit up.
“Since even heaven says I should wait, I’ll reluctantly stick around for her!”
She talked to herself, trying to make her tone sound nonchalant, but her upturned lips betrayed her.
She wheeled the packed suitcase to the entryway and set it down, then sat back on the living room sofa, pulling out her phone to kill time.
A long while later, as the clock hands neared midnight, the sound of keys turning in the lock finally came from the door.
Feng Miwan practically bounced up from the sofa and hurried to the door.
The door opened, and Xiong Yibai, just off her night shift, had a trace of fatigue on her face. She’d been very busy at work today and hadn’t had time to check the home surveillance.
Seeing Feng Miwan standing at the door right now, she was a bit surprised that this “large dog” had come to greet her today.
However, her gaze only lingered briefly on Feng Miwan’s face before sharply catching sight of the suitcase in the corner of the entryway.
Feng Miwan said in a light tone: “You’re back?”
Xiong Yibai lowered her eyelashes: “Mm. Moving out?”
“Yeah,”
Feng Miwan tried to keep her tone casual and natural,
“my hand’s pretty much better, and I can go back to training with the team. I can’t keep freeloading here and troubling you.”
Xiong Yibai’s gaze shifted from the suitcase to Feng Miwan’s face: “Moving now?”
“Mm…”
Feng Miwan nodded, her eyes sparkling as she looked at Xiong Yibai, half-joking and half-serious:
“Heh heh, but I specially waited for you to come back. I was afraid you’d get home super late, find the place empty, with no one to welcome you, and… um… feel a little sad!”
As she said this, little schemes rattled in her mind.
She anticipated Xiong Yibai responding like usual, with that somewhat helpless tone to refute her:
“You’re overthinking it,”
“How could I feel sad,”
Then she could laugh it off and say,
“I knew it! Just kidding!”
Making the farewell less awkward.
However, Xiong Yibai didn’t follow her expected script.
She simply lifted her eyes to look at Feng Miwan and countered with a question:
“Then are you still leaving?”
“What?”
Feng Miwan froze, hardly able to believe her ears.
Had she misheard??
Xiong Yibai quickly looked away: “Nothing. Got all your stuff? I’ll give you a ride.”
Feng Miwan’s mind buzzed, completely immersed in that earth-shattering question, and she didn’t hear what Xiong Yibai said afterward at all.
Seeing Feng Miwan not respond and standing there like a wooden post in the entryway with a dazed look, Xiong Yibai leaned in close, raising her hand and waving it lightly in front of her eyes.
“What, gone silly? Did you hear me?”
The waving fingers in front of her finally snapped Feng Miwan back to reality. She blinked and focused on Xiong Yibai:
“You… what did you just say?”
Xiong Yibai withdrew her hand: “I said I’ll give you a ride. That’s your only suitcase?”
She pointed at the one by the door.
Feng Miwan shook her head.
“Not that one!”
“The one before! What did you say before that?”
Xiong Yibai avoided her gaze, turned, and picked up the suitcase with one hand.
“The one before? Asked if you got all your stuff. What, forget something?”
With that, she set the suitcase beyond the threshold and dragged it toward the door outside, not giving Feng Miwan a chance to press about the “one before that.”
“Hey? Wait… that…”
Feng Miwan’s words stuck in her throat. Seeing Xiong Yibai already out the door, she hurried after her.
“I can carry the suitcase myself!”
“Your hand’s just better. Save your strength.”
Xiong Yibai didn’t look back and headed straight for the elevator.
The silence in the cramped descending elevator was suffocating.
Feng Miwan secretly stole a glance at the expressionless Xiong Yibai beside her, the question marks in her heart nearly piling up to the ceiling.
If… if she hadn’t misheard…
