She adjusted her expression and walked to the nurses’ station, flashing a very friendly smile at the on-duty nurse.
“Nurse, hello! We’re friends of Doctor Ren Queyue, here to drop off something for her. Could we go in for a moment? Just a bit—we promise not to disturb her work!”
The nurse looked up at them, glanced at the exam room that indeed had no patients, and nodded.
“Doctor Ren is inside. Go ahead, but make it quick.”
“Got it, thank you, nurse sister!”
Feng Miwan hurriedly pulled Zhao Shutong into the exam room. Hearing the footsteps, Ren Queyue didn’t lift her head and habitually asked,
“Which patient is this? What’s wrong?”
Zhao Shutong held back her laughter, pinched her throat, and said in a weird voice, “Doctor~ My heart condition is acting up. I miss you so much my chest hurts~”
Ren Queyue’s hands paused on the keyboard, and she abruptly looked up, seeing it was the two of them.
“…How is it you two? What’s with this act?”
She glanced at the door.
“No patients waiting, right?”
“All good, all good!”
Feng Miwan leaned over to the desk.
“We already checked with the nurse. We’re here to bring you some warmth! No one’s queuing outside!”
Ren Queyue let out a sigh of relief, then looked at them, both amused and exasperated.
“You two should be home sobering up and resting properly. What are you doing running to the hospital? Heart condition?”
She reached out and lightly poked Zhao Shutong’s forehead.
“I think you’re still drunk and came here to make a drunken scene.”
Zhao Shutong declared righteously,
“I missed you!”
“And we’re totally sober now! See how thoughtful we are? We came right when you had no patients!”
Ren Queyue shook her head helplessly and pointed to the chair nearby.
“Sit down. But seriously, you two timed it perfectly. I just handled an emergency patient and sent them for further checks. I’ve got a few minutes free.”
Feng Miwan looked around the exam room filled with medical equipment and asked,
“Sister Queyue, is the Emergency Department usually this busy?”
Ren Queyue sorted through some printed sheets of paper as she explained,
“Emergencies are different from other departments. Downtime comes in waves. One second it might be calm as can be, the next you’re running around nonstop.”
“I see.”
Feng Miwan nodded. “What about Yibai? Is the Trauma Department busy?”
Ren Queyue looked up.
“What? Can’t even be apart for a little while without checking up?”
“I don’t know about Yibai’s side, but Trauma generally has a lot of surgeries and scheduled patients. Around this time, she’s probably busy with rounds or seeing patients.”
Feng Miwan let out an “oh,” her slight disappointment not even fully forming on her face before Zhao Shutong interrupted.
“Queyue, what are you printing? Some internal files? So many copies.”
Zhao Shutong curiously craned her neck to look at the stack of freshly printed papers by Ren Queyue’s hand.
Ren Queyue casually pulled one out and handed it to her.
“Here, this. Lately, patients or their families have been kindly stuffing us with food and drinks, or eating takeout in the office.”
“The food scraps have attracted a ton of rats. The office is turning into a rat nest, so we’re printing these to post in every office.”
Zhao Shutong took it and saw several large characters printed in standard Song typeface:
“Please do not bring food into the doctors’ office.”
Feng Miwan leaned over for a look too and pursed her lips.
“Your sign is way too official and mild. Zero deterrent power! Those stubborn patients or thick-skinned family members will keep bringing food anyway!”
As she spoke, her eyes lit up. She grabbed a pen from Ren Queyue’s pen holder, snatched the paper,
“Watch this—I’ll add some punch!”
She hunched over the edge of the desk and scribbled furiously below the official slogan.
Finished, she smugly shoved the paper in front of Ren Queyue and Zhao Shutong.
Ren Queyue picked it up and read aloud:
“Please do not bring food into the doctors’ office.
Food scraps will attract rats. Rats will rummage through cases in the office, learn knowledge, treat patients, then replace the doctors, take over the hospital, and rule the world.”
Her voice cut off abruptly at the last four words. She held the paper, her expression frozen.
Zhao Shutong stretched her neck to read the whole thing, first pretending to be serious as she said,
“Whoa, why didn’t you say so earlier!”
Then she burst into earth-shaking laughter.
“Pfft—hahahahaha! Oh my god! Replace the doctors, take over the hospital, rule the world?! Feng Miwan, what goes on in your head all day?! Hahahaha…”
She doubled over laughing, pounding the desk.
Ren Queyue snapped out of her initial shock, couldn’t help but press a hand to her forehead and laugh too. She gave Feng Miwan a thumbs-up.
“Genius! Little Wan, you’re an absolute genius! This reason… airtight!”
“I’m reprinting this version right now and sending copies to the other offices! Let’s see who dares bring food anymore!”
Zhao Shutong wiped tears from laughing as she teased Ren Queyue.
“Hey! You’re no better! You actually plan to use it? Want the whole hospital’s offices ruled by rats?”
Ren Queyue was already editing the document on the computer, not looking up as she retorted deadpan,
“It’s escalated to ruling the world already. Ruling a hospital is nothing. Think big.”
Feng Miwan nodded vigorously beside her, very pleased with her masterpiece.
“Exactly! So reasonable!”
Zhao Shutong finally stopped laughing and waved her hands repeatedly. “Right, right, totally reasonable! My thinking was too small-scale!”
Feng Miwan added earnestly, “But don’t worry too much. With my Little Honeybee around, they can’t rule the world.”
At that moment, the printer hummed again, spitting out several fresh notices.
Ren Queyue grabbed a stack and shoved it into Feng Miwan’s hands.
“Alright, go find your Yibai. And give her one of these to post in the Trauma Department office.”
“No problem!”
Feng Miwan took the notices, dragged the still-snickering Zhao Shutong along. “Let’s go. Quit laughing.”
The two headed to the third-floor Trauma Department.
Feng Miwan, familiar with the place, found Xiong Yibai’s exam room and peeked inside—
A doctor in a white coat sat inside, head down writing something, but clearly not the one they were looking for.
Feng Miwan asked, “Huh? Where’s Yibai?”
Zhao Shutong tugged her, signaling to ask at the nurses’ station.
They went to the Trauma Department nurses’ station, where Feng Miwan flashed a sweet smile.
“Nurse sister, excuse me—is Doctor Xiong Yibai not in her exam room today?”
The nurse looked up at them and replied,
“Doctor Xiong? She’s in surgery. Do you need her for something?”
